Languages

Under construction, still.

Language choices are limited, sometimes severely, by Geography. You can't learn elvish if elves don't live around you AND interact with humanity, for instance.

Common: I am not using regional languages. This is D&D after all. Common is the language of all humans.

Dwarves are exclusively found in Norse areas in sufficient numbers not to be a curiosity, so only Vikings may start with Dwarvish.

Elvish are found in Vikingland, the British Isles, and France, mostly, but the ones in France have no contact with humanity, hence only  British Islanders and Vikings may start with Elvish.

Giants: Are found in Vikingland, but some minor giant types are also found in Central and Eastern Europe.

Gnomes are found in the North Pole British Isles, Northern Europe, and Araby. There may be one or two left in Germany, but it's unlikely they have sufficient contact with locals for their language to be known.

Goblins are isolated in Siberia. Mongols may start knowing goblin, but others have to encounter them first.

Halflings are pygmies. The only known Pygmies are in the Congo Basin (although the Pacific still needs to be developed). Araby and Egypt may start with Halfling, but it's uncommon even for them.

Orcs are found somewhere north of Vikingland and Finnland.

Abyssal: Chaotic Evil religions and Undead speak Abyssal. Egyptians may choose it, as may certain clerics.

Celestial: The universal language of Good or Neutral religions. Any Cleric or Paladin of such may learn it, as may certain religion based backgrounds.

Draconic is the universal language of Mages...most places. Anyone may learn it, although Primordial would be learned first in Araby.

Infernal is the language of Lawful evil religions. Certain Clerics may learn it.

Primordial: The language of elementals and Genies. It is learned before Sylvan and Draconic in Araby, but after in most other areas.

Sylvan is the language of most Fey, and Fey can be found anywhere, although some are best avoided. It can be learned anywhere, but comes after Primordial in Araby, where Elemental based creatures fill many of the same niches.

As yet there is no Undercommon or Deepspeech, as there is no KNOWN Underdark.
