Common Knowledge

I will be using Language Groups, although I doubt they will come up often in what is an isolated environment, Still, you never know.

Also, I use Language groups for Lore Skills. That way I can give the same Common-Knowledge-if-trained information to everyone who has it without wading through character sheets and missing someone.

All that will be posted here.

Let's get Nautical

I'm an ex sailor, and this game takes place on a ship, so I'll use the terms that come naturally. You may not be nautically experienced, but your character is, so...

Standing on the DECK (that's the floor, folks, even when there is no wall or roof) and looking towards the front is the BOW. That's FORE or FORWARD.

Left is called PORT (both have 4 letter). Right is called STARBOARD. Turn around and look at the back (AFT). Port and starboard haven't changed. You have. The PORT side is now to your right.

That bit AFT, the back end? If it overlooks water (and it does if there is a DECK there) is the FANTAIL. Go ahead, get some speed up and look at the water. It fans out like a tail. Now throw over your garbage and go back to work.

Now go through the door into the cabin (no hatches here just one regular door) Look up. That's the OVERHEAD. And you thought it was a ceiling. Now go back out and climb the ladder to the top of the roof. Nope, not a roof, another DECK. After all, you're standing on it. Better view, too, and the closet thing you have to a cargo hold.

And that is today's lesson on polite sailor speech. Let's avoid anything more authentic than this for speech. I think a little is allowed under Mature, but let's not push it and find out we're wrong.

Fishing in the Deep Blue

Close to shore, you may have noticed, water isn't blue, it's more green. Some of that is pollution in the modern world, probably, but, mostly, it's life.

Shallow water has sea weed rooted in it, little fish feeding on the sea weed, big fish on the little fish, and microflora and fauna on the various waste products and feeding other things themselves.

Farther out it gets deeper. How fast can vary quite a bit by location. Once it gets that beautiful deep blue everyone expects to see, there isn't any large amount of life anymore. The food chain is broken. Oh, there' likely a fair amount on the floor for a bit farther. Crab, lobster and the like, but fishing for them means waiting a day to see what went into the trap.

Also, of course, there are migrators. Shark, whale, dolphin and what not. Even some limited smaller sorts. Just not a lot of micro flora. Nothing for it to feed on. That's why the water is blue: It's CLEAN.

So your fisher will be net fishing close in, pole fishing farther out, and unable to find anything when really far out. On the plus side, catch may well be greater than you folks need, so there is a good chance of a surplus building up.

Oh, and those sharks that follow you for hundreds and thousands of miles? They're eating the garbage you throw over the side. You're feeding them, so they stick with you. Be aware when you feel the urge to go swimming.

To be fair the game's ship and crew is much smaller than the one I was one, so there may only be one shark. We usually had a small school.
