Link to a message in this game?  How is it done?

Maybe I'm being a bit thick here but how to I create links to specific posts within a thread?  I want to have to index my ST content - running a sandbox means I have a fair amount of info to scroll through, and that will only ever increase.

So, how do I create a 'link to a message in this game'?

Link to a message in this game?  How is it done?

A GM can use this basic form of a link to a specific message:

<a href="URL for game here#msg. no. here">Text for Link here</a>

Just as a "real-world" example:

<a href="https://www.rpol.net/display.cgi?gi=9590&ti=1946&date=1558952461#1"Link to Post No. 1 in this thread"</a>

This yields:

<a href="https://www.rpol.net/display.cgi?gi=9590&ti=1946&date=1558952461#1"Link to Post No. 1 in this thread"</a>

(since I'm not a GM here...)

Non-GMs may also just paste the URL to the message.  Go to the forum where the message is that you wish to link to, copy it's URL from your browser window, paste it into your message where you want the link displayed, adding the #msg. no at the end.

https://www.rpol.net/display.cgi?gi=9590&ti=1946&date=1558952461#1

yields:

Link to a message in this game?  How is it done?

Hi, I want more info on this question. When I want to link one topic to another by copying the browser link for the topic using the <a href="url here">text here</a> format, I get an error "403 FORBIDDEN" warning. I don't understand why. I am the GM of the game I try to do this in, so I should be able to use the <a> tag, right?

It would be helpful if you pasted your link here in the <a href=", etc. format so we can get a look at it.

All I can think of that might cause this with certain browsers is a URL beginning with http:// instead of https://.  One of the mods would know more.

Error 403 usually means the server on the other end of the transaction doesn't recognize you as an authorized user.

That is cool.  I didn't think the site allowed msg linking...  good to know (of course I'll forget it in a week)...

Link to a message in this game?  How is it done?

In reply to Frili (msg # 8):

There is nothing wrong with the code or the link you posted.  I was able to use it with no problem ...

I was able to copy it using a newly created GM character and have it work, and I also tried posting it as other characters.

(Feel free to delete the post I left in the game's OOC).  My first thought is that maybe clearing your cache would help.

Otherwise, maybe try quoting the post I left and see if you get the same error.

(I removed the link to the game in the above post).

I cleaned my cache and tried the quoting trick. I still get the same error.

In case it's needed: I'm posting from a MacBook Air (latest model) from Belgium (just because I know there's been some regulations that have been tightened around the internet from the EU side of things, but I'm doubtful it would have any effect on this).

What happens if you simply link the message -- just copy/paste the URL into a post?

Re: Link to a message in this game?  How is it done?

Frili, I misunderstood what was happening.  I thought that you were getting the error when trying to post the link.

I'm also getting the 403 Forbidden error now when I try to follow it.  Will do a bit more testing, and have flagged the issue for the other moderators and jase.

Or I was being dense.  I'm off coffee at the moment, so it might just be my caffeine deprived brain at work.  :-)

This is definitely way out of my knowledge base, so hopefully jase (or one of the other mods with more coding knowledge than I have) can find a solution.

Re: Link to a message in this game?  How is it done?

No problem.  Sorry it took me so long to figure it out, and thanks BBR for the nudge in the right direction.

When using code on the site, it's best to type it in by hand.  When you copy/paste from sources like Word or text documents, "" can become “”.  There's only a slight difference, but it can cause problems.

(The amount of difference in the two can be slight, depending on the fonts you use, but looking closely, you can see that the latter set is slight more curved.)

That was the issue in this case.

Yes, except that I didn't copy it from a document but typed it on my iPad (Air 2 if that makes any difference for code). Even when I just typed and tried to correct it on there, it didn't take. It's good to know!

Re: Link to a message in this game?  How is it done?

Being a long-time anti-Apple/MacIntosh/i-anything person, I know less about ipads than I do coding.  :-)

I had a similar problem with some code that I'd saved because I used it extensively after some update or other, but it'd been long enough ago that I'd forgotten about the issue.

Glad I could help, even if it was only partial help.
