Portraits and Images Bugged

I posted about this a while ago, that all I get in Microsoft Edge is a picture not found error.

https://imgur.com/a/JGhWIBR

Here it is, I have cleared cache, refreshed everything deleted history and all that good jazzy stuff (like people suggested) to no avail.

It does work on other browsers/computers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Portraits and Images Bugged

No portraits have been working for me for several days. They all come up as your example for me. When trying to select a portrait for a character the image box is blank.

Portraits and Images Bugged

As bigbadron advised here link to a message in this forum portaits are not hosted on RPoL and sometimes the connection between your computer and the external server fails.

Portraits have been absolutely fine for me - mileage will differ depending on where you are and which link in the chain between you and the server fails.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

It could be that your browser has cached a page with broken images.  Try going to a page with broken images and forcing a refresh (how you do this varies from browser to browser).

The other thing you can try is clearing your cache, which forces the browser to reload pages.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

In the instance of Brave, being that it's built around security and ad-blocking, you might try whatever version of "whitelisting" it has for RPoL and the two image servers.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

I don't know if this is the issue (I'm just another user), but I've found I can recreate the issue with Brave.

Background: RPoL currently loads images using HTTP URLs, rather than HTTPS ones. This is an example of what's known as 'mixed content', i.e. mixing HTTP and HTTPS on the same page. Browsers have long blocked 'active mixed content' (e.g. loading scripts this way); images are 'passive mixed content' and aren't as serious an issue, but browser companies are still moving towards blocking all mixed content.

The Brave browser blocks passive mixed content by default, so Brave will block all images loaded from an HTTP connection. Brave is supposed to auto-upgrade these URLs (i.e. automatically change the image request to HTTPS), but this is buggy/broken. When an RPoL page is loaded in Brave, all the portraits fail as a result.

To allow passive mixed content in Brave, go to Settings->Privacy and Security->Site and Shields settings->Insecure content (right at the bottom) and add rpol.net to the Allow list.

The Chromium-based version of Edge has the exact same setting, but I couldn't persuade it to block passive mixed content; it's possible there's an option somewhere that triggers this, in which case the Brave fix ought to work.

The same change is coming to Chrome; it was supposed to already be included, but has been postponed until the next version (84). Someone using a beta version of Chrome may run into the same problem.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

Where is this setting in Chrome? Because this just started happening to me on my new PC I just built last week, but doesn't happen to me on my older laptop.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

You know... I know that there was a similar option to what achmed_the_mad has listed for Brave in Chrome, at least two months ago when he posted that because I went in and set it in both my Chrome and the spouse's. Yet, my Chrome updated yesterday, and I cannot seem to find it -anywhere- now (I just spent what feels like forever looking for the pathway to list).

...course, portraits are working, so I'm not complaining. Is your Chrome 100% up to date, Kyper?

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

Yep. Like I said I literally just built the PC. They show up in edge on that PC, but not Chrome.

They work in Chrome on my laptop.

Both versions are the same and up to date according to them.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

I figured so, but wasn't sure if maybe there had been something pushed out in the last day or so that changed it. Like I said, I know there was a similar set of settings a few months ago, but I sure as heck can't find it now. Oh well - time to consult the old Googlefu, I suppose.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

Okay this is REALLY starting to bug me. All my setting in Chrome are the same between the two PC's. So I should be able to see the portraits on this PC. Even doing the stuff my GoogleFu showed turned up nada.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

Alright so I feel sheepish now.

I found the setting we were talking about before, but there is another setting you have to hit too.

So in the address bar hit the lock icon. Then in the dropdown click on site settings. In the page that comes up scroll down to insecure content, click on the dropdown for it and select allow.

Problem solved.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

As another side note on this issue, it seems you have to do this for EACH variant of rPol as I decided to toy around on the new responsive site the other day. So if it changes the URL for rPol at all you have to do the steps I outlined above in chrome if you're not seeing images to see them again in each iteration of it, not just one.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

We're going to switch the portraits to be hosted here on RPoL very shortly, that should help with the issues.

Re: Portraits and Images Bugged

Sounds like it would since it seems rPol is secure, and where they are hosted isn't.
