Not sure what is erroring out, but every time I open a forum I have not previously opened today, every thread is marked unread, not just the ones that have new posts, and this goes for fora that don't have new posts as well (such as when I opened this one, to create this thread).

PMs, rMail†, all the fora.  So far however, once I return, they are properly unmarked (I hit ye olde Mark All as Read before I close a thread) and only newly posted in threads are marked as unread.

†  I'll note, this one was particularly annoying as there is no "Mark All as Read" button in the rMail.

The read/unread flags are generated based on browser cookies.

If you happened to visit RPoL from a different browser or device, or some process ran in the background of your typical device that caused the cookies to be changed, that is typically what triggers that behavior with the site.

Yes, I know.  Since I only use one machine to visit RPoL, and thus only one browser, and everything was fine first thing this morning, I was checking to make sure something hadn't happened here between.

If it was only me, and nothing happened server side, I'll chalk it to cookie corruption.

This happens to me constantly, I'm not sure why because I mostly only use my phone on the same browser all the time. If someone can come up with an explanation, I would love to know, if only to sate my curiosity. It's not that big of a deal, I just hit Mark All As Read and look at timestamps to see what I have and haven't actually read.

Switching back and forth between the new and old sites has been known to cause strangeness. The cookies overlap. As long as you stick with one or the other, there are many fewer glitches. I do not know if this is really related, but the symptoms seem similar to was reported previously. The solution was to login in to one side, and full logout, then login to the other side and full logout. After that, as long as only one side was used, things tended to work as expected.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I only use responsive and have so for months.

If the site isn't always reading and writing data with the same cookies each and every time, it can get out of sync and trigger the issue.  It may not happen every time, but switching from one set of cookies to another (by switching between devices or browsers on the same device) will cause issues no matter what.

If you used your phone 100% of the time, and it was still happening, or if it happens between visits to the site when you're entirely on your phone, then it would likely be an issue with the way your phone is handling cookies.  There's a lot more data security features available now that are intended to prevent tracking and other nuisance behavior from websites, which might be disruptive to the way RPoL tracks data.

Finally tracked down the post I was looking for !  :>

For anyone wondering, jase explained the operation of cookies on RPoL in the following post: link to a message in another game

And as he said, if you're having problems with message indicators on the one computer, then all you can do is try a relog (= logout and login again).

Hope it works for you !  :>
