Definite bug: Private/Secret and anything with ]

Hi guys,

Confirmed happening on both rpol.net and r.rpol.net.

My post as the DM:
quote:
(publicly visible text)...

[Private to Valik: <small><gray>Valik's assumption about the rumour mill travelling faster by ship was one that bore fruit.  In every port -- at least in those where one of his race were tolerated -- talk of war dominated the discussion.

A sailor on board <i>The ValeHull</i>: "I hear war will be called and the armies raised!  Oh, I'd have given much to have that in my youth, but now I'm too old."

In a tavern on Westguard: "Did you hear about the <i>Secret Hound</i>?  Lost up near Haltigoth.  All souls aboard gone.  Third one this month!"

On the docks of a small fishing village near the Plains of Dust: "I hear the dwarves of Thorbardin will open their gates for the first time since the Cataclysm!"  This was met with sneers of derision.

The Seekers of Haven are raising an army to crush the elves of Qualinesti and the Dwarves of Thorbardin!
</gray></small>]

[Private to Ayrron: <small><gray>Ayrron's trip home to Kenderhome in Northern Ergothhad been anything but boring.  From meeting kith and kin in almost every village from Thisway to Oceantown up in the mountains, one thing which was never in short supply in Kenderhome were rumours.  War was not just approaching, it was <i>here</i>, he'd learned.  Just about everybody had people they'd lost contact with in Goodlund.  There were a few refugees -- but not many.  Goodlund might be the original homeplace of the Kender, but it <i>was</i> clear across the continent from Kenderhome.  What news <i>did</i> come was as it always came -- by word of mouth on if you got it 3rd hand, you counted it as close to the source of truth.  Most often it came fifth, sixth, or even seventh hand.  Once,] Ayrron passed along a rumour he'd heard himselfin Hylo, only to find the same rumour waiting for him in Hidal, and then again on his return trip to Thisway, fresh as a daisy!  While many of the rumours involved confirmed armies in the northeast of Ansalon, more interesting were the rumours of a magic staff that seemed to capture everyone's attention.

The barkeeper: “A magical staff!  I bet it was forged by demons from the terrible Darken Wood.  There are terrible mysteries in that place, there are!”

A man at a table: “Hooded men have been in town asking about that staff!  A suspicious-looking lot they were, too.  I wonder if they were offering a reward.”

A girl at a table: “It was probably found in Darken Wood. I hear that the ruins there are filled with wealth -— and dangers to match. No one who has entered that place has ever returned to tell the tale.”
</gray></small>]

As you can see, I have two private lines (one to each player), and within them, I have an embedded list.

It displays fine when reading the posts (and when previewing as a character using the "preview as" function on r.rpol.net).  But when one of my players used the quote function, he saw this:

quote:
<green>From rpol.net instead r.rpol.net</green>

Clearly, the nested square brackets is causing an issue.

Also annoying... I have to add a whole bit of meaningless text to this post, because I keep getting a Please, don't quote so much text for such a short reply. Trim the quote or use the reply link. message when I try to post it.  Clearly I need to demonstrate what's happening and quoting gives me the best ability to display what's happening at each stage...

blah blah blah I wonder how much text I have to add here in order to make the "short reply" part of the message go away and to accept the large blockquotes?  Maybe it's just the size of the quotes, regardless of how much content I add to the post?  If so, the error message is a little misleading, since it seems to imply that all I need is to improve the content-to-quote ratio.  And there is no "reply" link at this point -- this is the first post.  Hell's Bells!  Let's add some lorem ipsum and see where that gets us?

Tortor consequat id porta nibh venenatis cras. Duis ultricies lacus sed turpis tincidunt id aliquet. Ornare arcu dui vivamus arcu. Tellus integer feugiat scelerisque varius.

Yup, the private message is interpreting the first square bracket it finds as its closing tag, and that'd be the one on the opening list tag.

Jase said way back when that he can't guarantee code inside private lines ... in my experience you're generally OK with <> formatting tags, but square brackets (eg lists, quotes) should be avoided.

I don't think it was every envisaged that the private line function would be used for anything other than 'normal' text (descriptions, conversations etc) - and that if there was a need for fancy layouts it'd be put in a separate private message.

As a workaround, you could just make your list manually using the bullet ISO symbol: &bull; = • or just use hyphens.   :>

Yeah, that's what I did when I went back to edit, and the approach I'll take moving forward with private and secret lines.

I've encountered this with the bracket as well as changing colors within Private/Secret...

For the bracket issue, I just use { }
