-- The first rule of The Game ~~
"There can be only one."

"From the dawn of time we came, moving silently down through the centuries. Living many secret lives, struggling to reach the time of the Gathering, when the few who remain will battle to the last. No one has ever known we were among you...
...until now."

MYTHOLOGY OF HIGHLANDER

The mythology of Highlander is based on the premise of the existence of Immortals.  Immortals are both born and made, a latent immortal will live and age normally should no violence befall them during their lives, but should a potential immortal meet with a violent death, that person would awake from death, their ageing process stopped, their ability to heal increased. Without a violent death, however, to trigger Immortality, the potential Immortal ages normally and dies a natural death.  No immortal, latent or active, can reproduce, they are sterile.

To become stronger, they must absorb a Quickening, and therefore they enter into The Game, the systematic duelling of one another. The only way an Immortal can die, is to be beheaded.

Should an immortal lose his or her head, an energy release is called the Quickening and infuses the nearby immortal.  The last Immortal survivor inherits the totality of all the Quickening, called The Prize.  When there are only a few Immortals left, they will feel drawn to a particular location where they will fight to the last.  There are few rules:  an Immortal is safe only on holy ground, and only single combat is allowed.  If an Immortal is beheaded and there is no other Immortal nearby to absorb the Quickening, that Quickening is lost.

The Quickening can repair almost all damage to the body, without scarring, except death by decapitation.  It cannot regenerate lost limbs, but can regenerate organs.

IMMORTALS (Highlander)

Within the fantasy movies and television series, Highlander, an Immortal is one of a sub-group of human beings who upon violent death spontaneously resurrect into immortality. They no longer age, are not susceptible to illness, heal almost all wounds within minutes, including wounds that would be permanently fatal in normal humans.  Only severe wounds to the neck and throat are slow to heal.  Should an immortal's head be removed, however, death is permanent.

WATCHERS

The Watchers are an ancient order of mortals originally created by Ammaletu the Akkadian after he saw the immortal Gilgamesh come back to life. Watchers observe the lives of immortals and record their observations. They are aware of The Game and The Rules. Their mission is to observe and record but never interfere. The Watchers have stated that once all of the Immortals are no more, they will tell the world that Immortals once walked among them.

THE HUNTERS

A band of renegade Watchers dubbed The Hunters, who were bent on killing all immortals, considering them abominations. Horton was the charismatic ring leader and instigator of the group. In the 1980s he spent several years assigned to the Kurgan, it is likely that this exposure contributed in forming Horton's opinion of immortals as monsters.
