SwordArtOnline

In 2022, mankind finally built a full virtual environment:

In 2022, a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online (SAO) is released. With the NerveGear, a helmet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds. Both the game and the NerveGear were created by Akihiko Kayaba.

On November 6, 10,000 players log into SAO's mainframe cyberspace for the first time, only to discover that they are unable to log out. Kayaba appears and tells the players that they must beat all 100 floors of Aincrad, a steel castle which is the setting of SAO, if they wish to be free. He also states that those who suffer in-game deaths or have the NerveGear forcibly removed out-of-game will suffer real-life deaths.

This game will start at the beginning, just after the launch day. Players will start at level one and strive to level up and conquer each floor, as well as attempt to earn money in an effort to stay afloat and deal with the heavy toll this death game takes on their mental health. While this game is a homebrew, rather than a freeform, players will not be required to roll dice or anything similar to take actions. Rather, I and any future GM(s) will take care of that aspect of the game behind the scenes while the players focus on their writing, in hopes of making the game progress as fluidly as possible.

Although this game is based heavily on Sword Art Online (the anime), I have made several tweaks and have borrowed ideas from other shows, as well. That said, the game will have plenty of similarities to the original, but also plenty of new content to keep things interesting and, hopefully, more fun overall.
