(Work In Progress) City Of Ember

Imagine with me, if you will...

You're living in a world of complete darkness. No sunshine, no sunrise, no sunset. No moon, even at night to guide you. Imagine the only reliable sources of light in the city you call home are the various flood lamps placed in public spaces, a few bulbs placed along important streets, and the rare lamps in the homes of those wealthy enough to afford them.

And they keep going out.

One by one, the precious bulbs that keep the ever encroaching darkness at bay are flickering out. The inhabitable areas of your home shrink each time a bulb is lost, each time the black advances, making claustrophobia just as much of an issue as the darkness itself.

The fear of the dark is not unfounded, nor is it childish as many would have you believe. You know the truth. You've been to the edge, where the dim glow of Ember barely reaches, and the line between light and dark is blurred. You've heard the strange chittering, snarling and howling of unseen creatures out in the black.

You know better than most that your home, your bastion of hope, is but an Ember flickering in the ashes, bound to be stomped out by the march of time.

An excerpt from a citizen of Ember:
In the city of Ember, the sky is always dark. The only light comes from great flood lamps mounted on the buildings and at the tops of poles in the middle of the larger squares. When the lights are on, they cast a yellowish glow over the streets; people walking by throw long shadows that shorten and then stretch out  again. When the lights are off, as they are between nine at night and six in the morning, the city is so dark that people might as well be wearing blindfolds.

Sometimes darkness falls in the middle of the day. The city of Ember is old, and everything in it, including the power lines, are in need of repair. So now and then the lights flicker and go out. These are terrible moments for the people of Ember. As they come to a halt in the middle of the street or stand stock-still in their houses, afraid to move in utter blackness, they are reminded of something they prefer not to think about...

That some day the lights of the city might go out and never come back on.

Game Summary

This game, the City of Ember, will be my own personal take on the Books Of Ember, by Jeanne DuPrau, with some inspiration taken from other fictional sources- various mythologies (mostly Greek), the Maze Runner series, the Underland Chronicles, the Dark Hunters series and the Dresden Files series to name a few.

That said, we will not be following the plot line of the books- though I may take bits of inspiration from it when directing the overarching plot of the game. Generally speaking, mostly what I'll be taking from the original series is the idea of a city cloaked in darkness, with limited and dwindling light sources, and the sense of dread that brings to the denizens within.

As I previously mentioned, there will be elements of Greek mythology mixed in with the survival and post apocalyptic aspects of the game. On top of this, players will be allowed to create characters with elemental/kinetic abilities. These kinetics (pyros, hydros, ferros, etc.) will be the main focus of the game, as they try to survive in a city where light is essentially a commodity, as well as a life line.

Whether it is keeping the peace, tending the gardens, maintaining the structural integrity of the city, keeping the lights on or even mapping out forsaken sections of the city and the unknown landscape beyond, every citizen of Ember has a job.

What is your place in this community lost to the dark?
