Chapter 5B - The Ceremony
The wedding.
The Lychester Sept was well lit and spacious enough to accomodate several hundred of Lord Lyman’s guests.
Once it had been a humble structure of wood and simple carved masks hanging from its rafters, but over the centuries it had been dressed in fine stone. Rich translucent rainbow curtains hung in front of high windows, casting their scintillating colours across the Sept. each of the gods was represented in an intimidating eight foot statue of wood. At the great oaken doors of the Sept beneath an embossed bronze seven pointed star, below which the black talon of House Lychester was carved in stone. The sept was centuries old.
Father Mattheus stood in a commanding position, at a high altar between the statues of the Father and Mother. Before him, and a step below, stood Ser Adham, dressed in fine silks and bearing an even finerceremonial cloak dressed in silver thread and semiprecious stones. A nervous smile played across his lips as he waited.
Standing in for Lord Connington, Ser Jasper led the bridal party. His son Ser Jon, a pimply young man of nineteen years, and nephew, Ser Konrad Storm took up a ceremonial position just inside the doors of the Sept, sheathed swords held facing down, signifying that House Wylde had safeguarded the bride this far.
The lady Sylvia entered in resplendent beauty, accompanied by the sound of Ser Jasper’s paid musicians and a few hushed whispers. Lady Eileen Wylde, Ser Jasper’s daughter accompanied her, but stood two steps removed when she reached the altar .
Father Mattheus spoke in a strong and authoritative voice, speaking of the importance of the vows that bound man and wife, and the role of faith and the gods in such a union. He spoke little of the symbolic joining of houses from different regions, leaving others to draw their own conclusions.
As the ceremony came to its end he called for an exchange of vows, and for those guests gathered to uphold the union forged in front of the gods this day.
