Battle 3: A Knight's Grave

Koyrai was appalled at what they saw when they opened the door, but they had been expecting something sinister like this. The arcanist steeled himself and continued with their plan. He activated his Smokestick and put it inside the door.

"That weapon looks dangerous. Let's make ourselves harder to target with it, eh?" Smoke began to fill the doorway, blocking the view for everyone not gifted with Ashen Path magic.



Using my Smokestick to fill F-G 16-17 with smoke. That should hopefully help us enter the room without getting skewered by the reach weapon. The 17's squares should currently have partial cover from the graveknight (20% miss chance). The 16's should give total concealment (50% miss chance).

Puck's inmediatelly shot at the armoured figure, but the arrow pinged off the elaborate helmet and left no mark on the dreadful knight. Elf clicked his tongue.
"Iron beetlee, ugh."

OOC: Standard action shoot vs AC 26, missing the Lord Olinescu.
Move action to G16, sheathe longbow and light on fire the tinderstick. Crouches on the ceiling to present smaller target.
Quickdraw iron bomb and tinderstick.

Seeing what was inside the chamber, Patagogi wasn't sure he wanted to enter just yet.  Patagogi grabbed another of his potions and drank it down.  He could see into the room even though the smoke was filling up the area in front of the door.

Patagogi also didn't want to say anything to give away his position just yet.  So he took a 5ft step to make a clear shot at the enemy.

Drink a potion of displacement(CL5), Step 5ft to G14, start rage.

Terror, death and despair.

A handful of dust and a hundred reasons why Uluchi's first attempt at stilling the unnatural motion of undead bodies fueled by the absence of life should have missed. Her hands were at her waist and she had to angle high to avoid Veana. Her target was half behind a wall.

Two reasons combined to rail against this fate, the first her own skill and practice; producing bolts of cold that a mere week ago would have required her to suck the heat out of her entire adventuring party now take no more effort than thought.

The second, that the vile Lady Olinescu couldn't see it coming. The clever deployment of smoke against these creatures of darkness, no obstacle to the enhanced gaze of the bold group meant that Uluchi's attack strikes the unsuspecting foe in the shoulder rather than missing completely had she leaned to one or the other side even so slightly.

The ghast dressed in noble lady's garb recoiled as she was struck by a barrage of magical light, frost, and fangs.  Blindly trying to fend off her dinosaur attacker, she raised her brass holy symbol and called forth a pulse of dark energy to restore her life force.

The grave knight stood motionless, it's glowing eyes glaring into the thick smoke that filled the doorway.  It made no move to dodge or flinch as Puck's arrow bounced off of it's head, or to acknowledge the plight of it's undead wife.  In a sudden burst of movement, it slammed it's frost-rimmed glaive into the stone floor, causing a wave of deadly cold to wash over the party.  "HIDING WILL NOT SAVE YOU,"

STANDARD: Channel energy to heal undead, heals 10 damage

STANDARD: Use devastating blast to the west (30'ft cone), dealing 21 cold damage with a DC 16 reflex save for half.  Koyrai, pebble, patagogi, taliesin, and veana fail, while ward, puck, and uluchi succeed.

Gritting her lupine fangs as she was blasted by the unnatural cold caused by the undead monstrosity's attack, Veana reacted quickly and was able to regain focus in time to channel the divine around her to help mend some of her own wounds and those of her allies. Having done this, she moved unseen and vaulted over the obstacles as she made her way towards the ghastly woman. Finding herself between both of the unholy patrons of the decrepit crypt, the Angelborn called on the divine's wrath to smite the grave knight.

OOC: Standard to spend 2 LoH uses to Channel Energy and heal everyone 6hp. Concentration check passed.
Move to H18.
Swift action to activate smite on grave knight, now gain +6 AC vs GK and +6 to hit, +5 damage (+10 on first attack against him since he's evil undead).

If Koyrai would have known they were in for a blizzard blast, he would have used his resist energy scrolls before the door opened. Alas that was not the case. And now there was not a lot of time for such things. Still, he reached back into his haversack and pulled one out just in case, dropping his torch to do so.

"You ready to burn these beasties, Pebble?" asked Koyrai as he cast Burning Gaze upon his familiar, boosting the spell's power in the process. "Get in there, but try and stay high." The familiar zipped in through the smoke and flew high by the ceiling. The ioun wyrd turned at the last moment and cast its gaze upon the ghast, attempting to light it ablaze.



Koyrai
Free: Talk, use Arcane Reservoir point to boost spell DC by 2.
Standard: Cast Burning Gaze through Pebble. Lasts 5 rounds and has +2 DC.
Move: pull out a scroll of resist energy from my haversack.
Free: five foot step to I15.

Pebble
Move: fly to D17, staying high and avoiding AoO.
Standard: Use Burning Gaze on ghast (DC 20). She takes 2 fire damage but doesn't catch on fire.

Puck grunted when the unnatural cold harmed him and reminded him of lean times during winter, it wasn't a nice memory. He then side stepped, smoothly igniting his tindertwig with a snap of fingers, and igniting the ceramic skull-shaped weapon in his other hand ... his leg only slipping a little on the rime covering the ceiling. Thus he knelt before smoothly throwing his weapon besides Lord Olinescu where it exploded into a small maelstorm of fire and metal spikes the ceramic grenade was filled with. Lord Olinescu certainly wasn't amused when smoke rose from his form as metal pinged off his armor.

OOC: Move action to F16, igniting tindertwig and lighting the grenade on fire.
Standard to throw grenade on F18 vs AC 21 not missing, Lord Olinescu Saves with 25 against explosion, halving damages from grenade 2 piercing, 3 bludgeoning and 5 fire.
Anyone on squares surrounding F18 need to save vs DC 15 to halve damage like Lord Olinescu.
Tindertwig remains on fire for 9 more rounds. Grenade will blow up in 3 rounds.

Uluchi draws a shuddering ragged gasp as the cold begins making unwelcome changes to her body, but her focus is not altered and she sends another lance of energy to the thankfully still unaware Lady Olinescu, managing to thread her beam through allies and foes to its mark.

Not wanting to test her resistance to attacks such as the one she just launched, she sidesteps out of the doorway for a moment, using the time to flex and stretch her hands and fingers. Just a breath or two out of the line of fire before she will dart back in to take another shot at the foe.

Battle 3: A Knight's Grave

Taliesin shook his head violently in an attempt to stave off the cold. He looked back inside, through the smoke and managed to note the Lady of the estate repairing his burns from earlier. Teeth clattering, his hand grabbed some nightshade leaves from his pouch and chanted "Cydio neidr!" and pointed his rod roughly at the ghast. With that done, he took a step to the nearest corner. He looked at Uluchi, who also seemed to find taking cover to be a wise course of action, and nodded to her.

A giant snake almost instantly appeared where he was pointing with a flash of green. "The woman!" he ordered the snake in druidic, letting the magic that partially transformed him carry the meaning to the snake's mind. A series of three whistles follow the order, commanding Fandor to flank the ghast with the snake.

The blind undead however had the luck on her side, as she managed to dodge most of the assault with random flailing. Only a single claw slash from Fandor connected to her dead flesh.

OOC:

  STANDARD: Summon Nature's Ally III (losing fly), summon a Giant (from the rod) Constrictor Snake at H-I/19-20. (Edit: Snake starts with 5 temp hp)

Okay so I've messed up the rolls a bit. The snake had wrong bonuses and that made the all-important attack roll miss when corrected. Its rolls are 2 lower. Save is still made fortunately.

Taliesin rolled 21 using 1d20+10.  Snake Fort vs Stench.
Taliesin rolled 18 using 1d20+12.  Snake Attack vs Lady.
Taliesin rolled 6 using 1d4+4.  Fandor Claw Damage vs Lady.
Taliesin rolled 15,16,18 using d20+13,d20+13,d20+13.  Fandor Full Attack vs Lady.

The other rolls are invalid.

Patagogi felt the destructive power wash over him and it would have hurt more if he cared, but he didn't he moved into the room and took a swing with his weapon at the Lord to test his defenses.  It was easily deflected away this time but Patagogi was patient in his fighting ability.
"Move snake so I can get the ghast!"

Free action: speak to get snake to move!!

Stumbling under the continued barrage of teeth, claws and cold, the ghastly noblewoman called out to her husband.  "My love, please!  You must help-"

"SOUND BURST. ON MY POSITION."
The knight's voice was completely without compassion.

"...Yes my lord."

Raising the bronze aurochs symbol over her head once again, the Lady Olinescu called out to Baphomet to smite his enemies, and a deafening blast of noise washed over the adventurers crowded around Lord Olinescu.  The sound burst proved too much for Puck to handle, leaving the hunter dazed and reeling.

As Patagogi moved past the grave knight, it lashed out with a spiked elbow, catching him in the side.  Pursuing the bloodrager around the the invisible but obviously present Veana, the grave knight dropped it's long glaive and switched to it's scimitar.  It's first blow barely skimmed off of Patagogi's magical shield, but the second left a deep, freezing wound.



LADY OLINESCU
STANDARD: Cast sound burst on the intersection of G-H,17-18.  Puck, Patagogi, Veana, the snake and Lord Olinescu take 2 damage each, and Puck is stunned for one round.

LORD OLINESCU
REACTION: Armor Spike AoO vs Patagogi, hits for 15 damage
FREE    : 5' step to H18, drop Glaive, Quickdraw scimitar
SWIFT   : Smite good vs Patagogi.  Fails because Pata isn't good.
FULL    : Full attack with Scimitar and bite, scimitar hits once for 25 damage.


OOC: Note: I initially forgot about Pat's longarm spell, and assumed pata had made a mistake with positioning.   Since he doesn't have a clear shot at Pat with his glaive, he instead closes in and switches to his scimitar.  This would make his attack bonus 1 lower, minus another 1 for the dazzled, which I forgot to add to the roll, making the first attack just barely a miss.  Also, Pat attacking through veana's square would give the grave knight cover bonuses, though it doesn't matter because it was a miss anyways.

Moving to H18 would provoke an AoO from either the dread knights armor spikes or his glaive depending on how patagogi moved.  Without details, I went with the spikes.

As everyone has had two turns while the Lady was blinded, her blindness will be gone on your next turn.

Calling out divine retribution against the lady of the crypt, Veana's altered form finally came into view as she swung her sword at the undead knight. Unfortunately, the monstrosity's armor managed to deflect the blow. Frustrated, the paladin lunged forward with her lupine jaws, finding a crack in the fiend's armor and taking out a chunk of its flesh, which she regurgitated just as quickly.

"Tastes most foul, but I'll tear you to pieces!" she called out to the grave knight.

OOC: Swift action to smite Lady Olinescu and then Full attack vs Grave Knight...and damn you RNGesus! Wish the rolls were reversed...but either way, 15 damage to GK since smite attacks bypass all DR! :D

Battle 3: A Knight's Grave

After hearing Patagogi order the Snake, which couldn't understand him, Taliesin relayed a similar order to it. "Bind the man!" he yelled and took a couple of steps back to the doorway. He saw the giant snake slithering toward the armored undead and wrapping its body swiftly around the man. A quick squeeze from it crushed the man, but seemingly its plate armor held against the worst of the damage. He whistled once, signaling Fandor to hold for a second.

Satisfied with the snake's performance, Taliesin's hand found yet another plant in his pouch. While all of his party were warded against contaminated air, the snake wasn't which required him to wait for its attack before this. Petals of ash, he gathered in his hand. He whispered "Lludw" and blowed on them. The petals disintegrated into burnt ash and expanded into the room, filling the entire thing in an instant.

Now the ash storm robbed the sight of his enemies, and unfortunately the snake, he whistled twice more. Fandor swiftly bit into the woman in front, causing her corpse to finally stop moving. The troodon were smart animals, and Fandor was smarter than most. He wasted no time once the corpse goes limp and dashed back down to face the sole remaining undead in the room.

Even as the storm of ash began to fill the battlefield, Koyrai moved into position to cast an empowered magic missile at the graveknight. Several missiles, actually. They all struck true (as magic missiles do) and dealt a blow to the grappled undead abomination. He would have yelled a victory cheer, but didn't want to give the knight any extra sounds to help pinpoint the arcanist's location among the ash cloud.

Meanwhile, Pebble tried to burn the graveknight with its gaze, then flew up to the center of the room for a good vantage point.

Patagogi thought he would be able to get a chance to hit the woman but the other creature took care of her instead.

Deciding to not be within range of the blade of the Lord Patagogi moved back 15ft.  Once there he grabbed a small token which resembled an archery target and cast a spell.  His previous wounds even now already closing up stemming the flow of blood.

Move action to L19
Standard action to cast truestrike.
Heal 4 hp bringing me to 26HP.

With another deep breath of the foul air, Uluchi spins out of the corner, hand raised to deliver another blow to the ghast but sees that their erstwhile animal compatriot has already rendered the foe back to the true death it deserves. Switching her attention to the dreadful knight, she waits for an opportunity to disrupt his footing.

Battle 3: A Knight's Grave

The grave knight repelled the snakes attempt to wrap him up with a quick slash from it's scimitar before being engulfed in Taliesin's storm of swirling ash and fog.  Blinded by the storm, the undead monstrosity tilted it's head to listen as it was surrounded and the party began to lay into it.  After a moment, it turned to face the door where Taliesin and Koyrai had cast their spells.

"LIKE RATS, I'VE HEARD YOU SCUTTLE AWAY FROM MY POWER.  AND LIKE RATS, YOU COME CREEPING BACK AS THE LIGHT FADES."

The Grave Knight let out a terrifying howl, filled with raw malevolence that chilled even Veana the paladin to her core.  Scraping the frost-rimmed scimitar along the ground, it sent another blast of freezing cold through the open door and into the spellcasters gathered around it.

OOC: The Grave knight has spell resistance, so you'll have to roll a DC 18 caster level check to affect him.  I rolled for you for the burst of radiance and magic missile, which both succeeded.

LORD OLINESCU
REACTION: AoO vs Snake's attempt to grapple.  Hits for 17 damage, preventing grapple.
SWIFT   : End Savage maw to intimidate everyone in 30 ft that can hear him.  39 on the intimidate check.  Everyone but Taliesin (including veana) is shaken (-2 to attack, ability checks, saves, skills) for 5 rounds, Tal is shaken for 4.

Patagogi felt the utter power from the Lord but he was ready to hit him hard with his next attack.  Growling as he moved 10ft towards the Lord, Patagogi swung his falcata in both hands at just the right angle and hit the Lord in a soft part in his armor.

Attack action with true strike Hit AC48 for 13 damage.  Weapon is magical.

Puck nearly fell off the ceiling, fortunately spiritual blessing held, thus he shuffled to his left and pulled another arrow and bow, aiming with a snarl at the Graveknight.

Unfortunately his aim was off, and arrow crushed itself against his armor without much effect.

OOC: Move to F16, still on ceiling. Quickdraw Composite Longbow+1, Pheromone Arrow.

Battle 3: A Knight's Grave

The beasts thrash against the armored undead, almost surrounded by them and allies. Unfortunately, the snake simply misses the target in the storm while Fandor's assault is stopped in its tracks by the thick armor.

Meanwhile, Taliesin digs through his pack to retrieve a scroll. A rather short-lived blessing is inscribed on the sheet, and he extends the scroll to Uluchi. "Tip the scales perhaps?" he says softly as he does so.

The grave knight was truly a terrifying sight to behold, but Veana would not back away from the fight so easily. Steeling her resolve, she called on the powers of the light and weaponized them against her foe.

"That is where you are wrong," she said as she sheathed her word sword. "The light does not falter!" Her open palm began to shine brightly as she touched the undead knight, searing its foul flesh with her divine power.

OOC: Move action to sheathe longsword. Standard to LoH to harm GK for 10 damage (forgot to add +5 from Smite on the damage roll).

"Ahhh!" yelled Koyrai as he took a blast of foul magic to the face. That hurt! And he wouldn't want to admit it, but he was thoroughly shaken by the graveknight at this point. Even so, the arcanist managed to throw another empowered spell at the undead creature before retreating to a new spot where he hoped the graveknight wouldn't know to target him.

Meanwhile, Pebble continued to hover in the middle of the larger room, attempting (and failing) to burn the graveknight to a crisp.



Looks like I forgot to test Spell Resistance for my Burning Gaze too. I did that now, and it succeeded. So did my new Magic Missile SR test.

Koyrai
Free: Spend an Arcane Reservoir point to increase caster level of Magic Missile.
Standard: Cast Magic Missile at graveknight, dealing 16 force damage.

Battle 3: A Knight's Grave

An involuntary step back, shuddering against the waves of cold, tasting the air with her forked tongue while not actually helping her friends in a fight for their lives.

Fear.

Shimmying from side to side, moving her feet but not going anywhere, Uluchi's distress is obvious but unlikely to attract attention in the swirling melee that is the struggle of battle. Of course, Taliesin looking right at her makes this silver lining less realistic, but let a lady have her delusions.

"Not again, not again, no you can't take them."

Killing a spider was easy enough, but she couldn't stop its fangs. This living hulk of armor is a creature of ice and death but she can take away its blade or try at least. The scimitar is already covered in frost, but Uluchi's clenched fists summon stubbornly non-frozen water, a slick layer of reduced friction that causes the jagged weapon to slip through the Lord's hands, clanging against the stone at his feet.

"Hah!"

Glancing to the offered scroll, Uluchi gives brief nod, reaching out for it and unfurling the text, getting ready to invoke the holy power contained within the runes and ink.
Standard: Cast Grease, targeting Lord Olinescu's weapon, SR: No, Reflex DC 16 to negate;

Grave knights have a slam; and even if they didn't, gauntlets can be used to prosecute AoOs; not sure what the attack bonus should be (somewhere south of 17, but north of 12, I'm guessing) or how much damage it would deal.
