The Two Towns

General
There are two towns as there are 2 Carnelians, the Modern 'Mizzurian' one, and the Medieval one.
From the foot of the escarpment to the nominal centre of either town is 4 miles, to the port/docks is 6miles.

The Modern town, or at least the grided section is about 2 miles wide, the nominal centre being the cross roads at the junction of the Mizzurian Office and Town Hall.

The Modern docks are also considerably bigger being about 1 mile wide and half a mile deep, but the modern docks, which is the only area of the town nominally fortified, also encompasses the cement works, chemical and Bio-Fuel plant, gas extraction plant (Hydrogen, Oxygen, Co2), refuse centre and recycling plant.

The Modern Town
Turning left out the Mansion gate the road runs parallel to the wall of the mansion grounds, approximately 12m(40ft) from the wall, and about the same from the edge of the escarpment. After about a kilometre the road starts to descend in a set of 3 switchbacks, each approximately 950m(3120ft/0.6mile) in length and with an approx 6deg slope (11%), each descent leg dropping approximately 100m (330ft) over its length, widened bends facilitate the traversal of the switchbacks by articulated vehicles.
At the point the switchback commences, a constructed pathway, itself a series of overhung switch backs of 50m (160ft) in length shortcuts the main roadway. Each switchback section drops 15m (17deg slope - 30%), so there are 20 legs from the top to the floor of the valley.
Upon reaching the valley floor the main road is about 15m ahead, to your left about 1800m away a roundabout, where the road from the switch back joins the road into town(right) and a second road that appears to head further inland.
Turning towards town (right) the road runs slightly west of south, a junction on the right after 500m, appears to head into the forest parallel to the escarpment. A sign on the left hand side of the road which appears to be pointing right and which can only be read from the town side (i.e. facing the escarpment), reads "Effluent Processing Plant". Below this is a second rectangular sign with a white vertical arrow on a blue background on the LHS of the sign and the words "Medieval Town" to the right of the arrow. The sign is written in both English and Chinese Characters(Wuxi Dialect).

This makes the junction a left turn when coming from town. The layout of the junction and road markings indicate that traffic drives on the left, the same as in the UK and Japan. The main road is effectively a dual carriageway, 2 lanes in each direction separated by a 3 feet wide central reservation. Steel crash barriers line both sides of the road, with the central reservation planted with wild flowers and trees every 20 feet or so. The land to either side is heavily forested, mixed deciduous forest, and obviously native/original.

After about another kilometre you come the signs of more road junctions and habitation.

The town is laid out on a grid, with a dual carriageway every kilometre, in each direction. Each kilometre block, with the exception of the central block is divided into 100m x 200m blocks for the most part. The orientation of these blocks varies according to where you are in the town. Each 100m x 200m block is further sub-divided into plots, with a standard plot being approximately 48m x 70m.

The centre of town is dominated by the Mizzurian "Block", Office, Manufacturing facility, and warehouses. The Mizzurian "block" is a full 1km x 1km block divided into 4 500m x 500m sub-blocks. Coming from the mansion, along the main road, the 3 story manufacturing facility is the first dominant structure encountered. On first perception the building looks to be surrounded by a 10ft high Bamboo slatted fence sitting atop a stone wall made from flat rocks. The building itself is a mix of what appears to be steel and white concrete with almost no visible windows. However most of the building is actually hidden by a "living wall of plants". The surrounding fence and wall on closer inspection are revealed to be some sort of concrete wall about 3ft of similar construction to that separating the traffic lanes, on top of which appears to be some form of slatted metal fence, all of which are painted to give the illusion of the bamboo fence on top of the stone wall from more than about 1 meter away. The outer fence is separated from the actual building by a 10m gap, all of which is plated with a wild flower meadow and a variety of fruit and utility trees spaced about 10m apart.

The roadway between the manufacturing building and the next building is set up as a high security entrance with full width half circle rising barriers 3ft high to bar traffic in the appropriate direction. Smaller high security entrances on either side of the road way appear to be for bicycles and pedestrians. The building to the LHS, inside the security perimeter looks to be a security office. The visible guard appears to be armed, and CCTV cameras are in obvious evidence covering the roadway entrances.

The next block, which appears to be the main Mizzurian office, isn't surrounded by the fence and wall for the most part, only the 20m section closest to the roadways between it and the Manufacturing building is.

The main office building is the highest building in town at 5 storeys, and whilst it occupies almost the full width of the plot it only occupies about 1/5 of the depth. It is a glass and steel building and again incorporates, a significant amount of "living" wall. The 10m area between the front of the building and the foot path is again planted as a wild flower meadow with the same variety of fruit and utility trees on the same spacing.
The rear of the plot is currently unoccupied, as is the SW quadrant. The eastern side of the NW Quadrant is occupied by a row of warehouses, with the perimeter fence and security on the roadway entrance. A temporary steel section fence runs along the rear of the warehouses, with a row of concrete blocks on the warehouse side. A similar fence runs along the roadway to the southern road and then to the rear of the office block. The remained of the NW quadrant appears to be a store of tree trunks, obviously felled as part of the town layout construction.

Diagonally to the SE of the Mizzurian office is the Town Hall. It's a three story, steel, timber, and glass building, which occupies 2/3 the width of the plot. The next plot down to the East is another large building, again three storeys, and again a steel, 'black' timber, and glass constructed building. It's obvious building is a hotel as declaimed by its vibrant sign "The Lion Pagoda Hotel".

The two plots to the west of the town hall and south of the Mizzurian offices are warehouses, 3 in the eastern plot and 4 in the western plot. All are the equivalent of 2 storey buildings. 2 of the warehouses in the western block make up the "Carnelian Resettlement Centre".  Signs in groups of 4, two in Chinese or other oriental language, one in possibly Spanish, and one in English, declaim "Carnelian Resettlement Centre", "Reception", "Claims", "Education Centre", "First Aid", "Restaurant", "Wash Rooms", and a few other 'service' type offerings. The groups of people in front of the buildings look to be approximately split 50% Caucasian ("White"/Hispanic) and 50% Oriental.

The plot to the east of the Mizzurian office is occupied by a mix of 3 storey buildings, the ground floor of which are retail outlets. The are 2 dressmakers and 1 tailor, 1 sports shop, 1 children's clothes shop, a shoe shop (which also has a proper cobbler), a butcher, a fishmonger, a bakery, a green grocer, 2 general 'foods' stores, a 'spices' store, a haberdashery (material, wool, sewing machines, weaving looms), a 'hand' tool store, an ironmongers, a furniture outlet (although this is just a display shop for the 3 cabinet makers in town), a toy store, a computer store, a white goods electrical retailer, a jewellers, and what you might call an 'ethnic' shop which sells a mixture of things that might double as gifts as well as 'greetings' cards which appear to be a mixture of 'local' hand made and modern factory cards.
In addition to the Bar, which is a sort of odd mix between a New Orleans's American Jazz bar and an old English/Irish Pub, there is a Brasserie/Cafe, and an oriental 'restaurant' (not this is more akin to an old fashioned road-side cafe than a modern fancy restaurant). There is also a Fuel station on the NW corner of the plot. The plots to the North and East of the retail outlets are occupied by business providing services to the town, builders, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, decorators, etc. There is also an agricultural/aborialists outlet, which sells a selection of modern abrorial and horticultural tools, including 2 wheel tractors. The premesis also houses departments which sell fertilizers, seeds, and a selection of horticultural/agricultural chemicals.

The residential buildings are a real mix of styles and for the most part are single storey, at least away from the center of town. Chinese timber and stone with tile roofs account for about 1/4, Japanese style Timber and Paper wall with tile roofs about 1/4, Timber and Glass about 1/4, and the remainder a complete assortment. There are also 8 off 3 storey 12 unit apartment blocks, 4 off 3 storey 18 unit apartment blocks, and 12 off 4 storey 8 unit apartment blocks
About 40% of the residential plots are unoccupied currently.
There is also a significant amount of construction in progress across the whole town.
