Day 15 19 Juvax 45 : The day after the Balls

As notified breakfast will be served between 09:30 and 10:30.

Those present arriving between 09:25 and 09:35 will be Cordelia, Prince Fredizkhankt, Siobhan, Garbiel and his partner, Scott, Isla, Madison, Charlie and Alanso (you know his name as it was announced when she arrived at the Ball with him), Charlie's 3 friends and their partners, Alana, Winter, Natalie, Blake, Cormac, Kenneth and the 'brunette', Cassandra and her partner, and Edward and his partner.

Kenneth is going to look a bit sheepish (and also tired), whilst the girls with Cassandra and Gabriel are going to be a little overawed.

There is going to be a general round of introductions, so
Charlie's 3 friends from school are Jodie, Chelsea, and Kelly, and their partners are Gabriella (Hispanic), Jose (Hispanic), and Michael(Oriental).
The 'brunette' with Kenneth is Marcie.
The Oriental girl with Edward is Jen.
The brunette with Cassandra is Katherine.
The Hispanic girl with Gabriel is Adriana.

Katherine, Adriana, and Jen are all from the 'Modern town'. Gabriella is a You-Tuber from Mizzurian Earth. Jose and Michael are also from Mizzurian Earth and work for Mizzurian, both have apartments in the Modern town.
Cordelia will say that Marcie is from True Earth, and is a counselor for Mizzurian.

Most people are casually dressed.
Cordelia is in her ubiquitous jeans, T-shirt, and boots.
Prince Fredizkhankt is in a causal shirt and trousers.
Siobhan is in what would have been considered a 'day' dress.
Gabriel, Scott, Isla, and Madison are attired much in the same fashion as they were in Elysium.

Charlie and her 3 friends are in dark blue sweatshirts all of which sport the same logo above the left breast, and mid blue mid thigh length pleated blue skirts.
Gabriella is also dressed in a sweatshirt and skirt, although not the same colour or styles as Charlie and her friends.
Jose and Michael are wearing what they were wearing for the ball.
Katherine is in a T-shirt, and skirt.
Jen and Adriana are in a man's shirt, and skirt.
Marcie is also in a sweatshirt (several sizes too big and obviously fairly worn) and a skirt (same style and colour as Jen and Adrianna). Unlike Kenneth she does not look at all tired.

Day 15 19 Juvax 45 : The day after the Balls

gm note:
You will mostly find that from here on in a lot of what happens will be a result of things the characters may do, and what happens as a result of that. Certain things will trigger certain events..

Cordelia:
"No. You're free to do as you wish. For those of you that have guests from the Expo I suggest that they return to the complex before the Expo opens, so I would suggest sometime around 4pm this afternoon. The portal will have recharged by then. I do have something I would like Charlie to do but I'm guessing she's going to the Expo so it will have to wait until after the Expo ends."

Charlie glares at her mother.
Charlie:
"Too right. We're going to the Expo. Then I need to see my friends back to school before I'm going to run any more errands."

Cordelia:
"As I said no particular rush."

Natsuki:
Apparently exhibiting a new found confidence this morning.. "Gabriel can I ask when you're planning to return to Elysium? I and probably most of us would have a favour to ask. "

Gabriel:
"Not till later. I need to see Adrianna back to town, then I have some things to discuss with Cathal, although I don't know if we're doing that before or after lunch. So we can either do something later this morning or later this afternoon. I'm assuming that Madison can manage without me for a bit."

Cassandra Troy:
"Charlie what do you want me to do with the brief case?"

Charlie:
"Have you opened it?"

Cassandra Troy:
"No"

Charlie:
"Can you open it?"

Cassandra Troy:
"Probably"

Charlie:
"Well as long as you don't blow the bloody doors off, drop it by my room once you've opened it."

Day 15 19 Juvax 45 : The day after the Balls

Rhiannon came to breakfast, chipper as can be. Even she wasn't sure why she was in a good mood, but she never overthought about being positive. When she arrived, the tables were full. There were her cousins as well as a bunch of partners. She wondered how many of them knew they were in a completely different reality from the Expo. The twin moons should have been a clue, but she herself didn't remember see them the night before.

After filling her plate with food, she found an empty seat away from Charlie. As she placed her dish on the table she gave her greeting

"Good morning, cousins and esteemed guests. Fredrikt, Gabriel, good morning. Thank you for the dance last night. I enjoyed it." She sat and started eating.

"I don't recall seeing anything scheduled for today. It'll be a training day then?"

Re: Day 15 19 Juvax 45 : The day after the Balls

Unless anyone has anything they wish to raise lunch will generally be a quiet affair.
Once people have nominally finished eating Gabriel will broach the subject of the meeting Natsuki requested with her.
After a brief discussion, primarily driven by Natsuki's reluctance to raise the real reason for the meeting with Prince Fredizkhankt present, until it transpires he's very well aware of the Families abilities to use Pattern and or Logrus, and some of the things you can do with them, the meeting is scheduled for 2pm, and invites are sent to Kenneth and Edward.
In the discussion it also transpires that Prince Fredizkhankt would prefer it if you didn't raise the Pattern when he's around, at least here as it causses him additional difficulties this close to a real Pattern. The Logrus far less of an issue as it's entropic nature is much closer to that of the Abyss. Use of the Pattern is much less of an issue in Elysium, although he wouldn't recommend using it anywhere close by, and by that he means at least 100ft.

Kenneth and Edward will turn up for the meeting, which is really a continuation of lunch in the Dining Room post Cordelia and Prince Fredizkhankt leaving. Kenneth looks no where near as tired as he did at breakfast.

The primary purpose of the meeting is so that you can all gain the one missing Aura imprint, that of the Logrus.
The first thing to not is that Gabriels aura is partially masked, not by one but by 2 auras, one you know corresponds to that of a Shapeshifter, and the second is the one you've not seen before, which by implication must be the Logrus aura.
You will also note that the Logrus aura is not stable but shifts and changes.

Once the meeting is over, people will disperse.

Dinner will be served at 7:30 as is usual.
Siobah and Angel will be present at dinner but Cordelia, Prince Fredizkhankt, Gabriel, and Charlie and her friends will not be.

"In a certain manner you would be correct that you were there for 'family' reasons, but in the main you were there to introduce you all to what you can expect in the wider world outside of the one you are used to."
"As I have no personal experience of your university system, I can't comment directly on your experiences to date, but I would suspect that if you took the whole of a university's population and made them all attend a Ball then you would most likely find the same disposition of social types as you encountered at the Mizzurian Ball, the same is unlikely to be true of the Ball here unless you look at the two populations of attendees in isolation.
"You may have noticed that the attendees from the Medieval town didn't behave in quite the same way as those from the Modern town, which is a reflection in the differences in culture, although a cultural shift towards that of the Modern town is slowly gaining momentum. Exactly how far the culture will shift we don't know. There is a greater degree of cross traffic and exchange of ideas between the two than between Rebma and Amber, and Remba has refused to culturally shift anywhere towards that of Amber for several centuries."
"Aside from introducing you all to a significant cultural difference, one that none of you will likely have encountered, and which you are likely to find significantly more prevalent in Shadow, the other objective was to introduce you to the other aspects that come from being a member of the family, to wit your dance partners dancing with you so that they could as you put it dump their woes on you."
"Knowing what the population thinks, and what their issues and concerns are, is a significant element in being able to Govern and Administer a city efficiently, and in doing so being able to maximize the amount of sustainable wealth you can extract, both to grow the city, and to sustain your own interests, and as you're most likely aware we have a number of problems that we currently need to address and resolve, but don't have the manpower or finances to do a great deal about, at least in the short term."

Rhiannon's reaction to Siobhan's response changed quite bit as she went on from start to finish. At first, she was annoyed, though she didn't show it. Siobhan asked how she felt about the balls and she answered. There might have been a million good reasons for what she experienced, but she still felt how she felt. But by the end, the queen had gone into how hearing the concerns of these important people would help her govern. That's when she realized that she wasn't a Disney princess. She was a real one, in possibly the most powerful house in all reality. She would have actual responsibilities, and would be looked at for leadership. It was both frightening and empowering, but it also completely overshadowed her butt-hurt feelings about not having guys trying to get into her pants.

"Thank you for that, Siobhan. I think I needed that perspective. I'm still disappointed, but I'll better check my expectations for such functions in the future."

"Expectations, assumptions, and perspective are all different things, as is wisdom, which perspective doesn't necessarily bring with age."
"Expectations can be very variable according to circumstance and potential desired outcomes, and different people may have different expectations from the same event or meeting. It had become expected that Lilybeth would always turn up at a ball in a revealing gown accompanied by one or two partners, and that she would leave with one or two different others. For that reason it wasn't deemed anything other than normal behavior on her part and she was mostly ignored because of it. When Cordlia came to Court and behaved in a similarly outrageous manner people took notice, and even Lilybeth changed her behavior in response. It became a sort of competition, the young upstart as it were inspiring the much jaded older party to try and out do her. Now from our perspective the fact that Cordelia upset the status-quo was useful because it put people off-guard."
"Thus, be careful what expectations you set, as they maybe false from a number of perspectives, on which note, can I ask what you were expecting from the balls and thus what in particular led to your disappointment, aside from possibly being 'ignored', although you possibly weren't as ignored as you may have thought."

"Well, I suppose I expected the Carnelian ball to be more formal - as it was. So that went about how I thought. I thought the expo ball would be more of a social, like a college party. The pool party was more like it, but as I said... I'm used to bolder men. I always considered it somewhat annoying to have guys buzzing around, but I didn't realize how much I really liked it until it wasn't there. I might have been more noticed than I realize, but if I was, one of them should have told me. At least in university, my friends would point them out."

Re: Day 15 19 Juvax 45 : The day after the Balls

"I can see why you would be disappointed in the Mizzurian Ball if you had that preconception, but I'm not sure why you had formed that expectation in the first place, given it was a Corporate event. Yes there was an undercurrent in the conception of the event that it was a mechanism to reward those responsible for the launch of the technology and the game, but it also had to be held in the context of a 'Corporate Media Event', not that I quite understand exactly what that means."
"The ball here on the other hand was more intended to introduce you all to the formality of what you can expect in your roles in the family in future, with the caveat that it is far more relaxed that a ball in say Amber, Rebma, or Kashfa, or what you might encounter were it a 'state' reception, Ambassadorial Ball, or similar. There was also a degree of rewarding those Mizzurian employees who live here and chose not to go to the Mizzurian Ball, although I believe the number of attendees in this respect was less than expected."
"There is also the additional complication of your status as members of the Royal Family, which is something of a contradiction, depending on your gender. For the male members of the family, it can become an excuse for debauchery, lecherousness, and just simply taking advantage, but for the female members it is almost a hands-off, unless you're somebody like Lilybeth with a certain reputation, in which case you may just want to stay clear and out of her gaze. It can both make life easier and more difficult depending on your perspective, and depending on whom you may be chasing. I believe that even in your culture that women asking men for a liaison is considered out of the normal and I'm aware on at least one occasion Cordelia was turned down, but not because she was a member of the Royal Family, but because of her connections with the higher echelons of the Triads, and the fact that she owned the nightclub in question. Your status can thus have an impact on those around you which you either accept or actively do something to counter."

The more Rhiannon listened, the more depressed she got. While she was super excited about all the wonder and magic of her new reality, it sounded like her social life would be banjaxed. It was either be off-limits or like Lilybeth, who sounded a slag. Two utter extremes, neither appealing in the slightest. Maybe when she learned to walk in shadow, she would find places to go where she could be completely anonymous.

Unable to comment further as she doesn't have the cultural or actual experience of University life, given that the concept doesn't exist in Amber or most of the Golden Circle, she asks if anyone else has anything to add.

Kenneth will admit to being total overwhelmed by the whole experience and if it hadn't been for the PAs and Charlie and her friends he'd have been completely lost, with no idea of where even to start or how to proceed. He thinks it will be sometime before he can even cope in such situations on his own.
Alana will admit that the Mizzurian Ball was daunting and overwhelming but that the Carnelian ball had much more of an 'Estate Cèilidh' feel to it.
Edward will say that he found the whole affair entertaining, but he was surprised when he discovered the 'pool party'.

Siobhan's comment then takes him a little by surprise.
Siobhan:
"Hmmm, yes well it's being going on since the first New Years Ball here. It took some of us by surprise once we discovered it had taken place the first time much to Cordelia's amusement. After the second year, Cordelia formalized it properly, arranging the bar staff and the bouncers to keep those under 18 from attending, much to the annoyance of some."

"I have to admit that I was one of those in favour of it being 21, but Cordelia argued it down to 18, although Charlotte and her friends have been allowed to attend since they were 16, along with a few others deemed mature enough. And yes Charlotte did complain from the age of 13 although at that point she was at school so the point was moot for a few years."

"At 15 I thought I knew everything, how to manipulate old farts to get what I wanted. Then my father tried to marry me off for a Corp promotion. Maybe if I'd have known what was in store for me in the next couple of years I might, just might have opted for the marriage. Lets just say that the real world and the Corp world I'd been sheltered in for those 15 years were 2 very different things. 18 is a good compromise, yes there are some that can cope at 16, I probably could have, but 90% of my shallow compatriots, not a chance, they'd have dived in feet first without the first idea of the consequences then regretted it once reality hit home."

Rhiannon smiled. She was actually enjoying the way the conversation went. Not that the family business wasn't interesting, but these kinds of social discussions were just so fun.

"I would have been fine at sixteen, which actually wasn't so long ago. I agree that some of my friends might have gone over their heads, but so what? Mistakes and regrets are part of growing up. I've made plenty and I wouldn't go back and change anything." She paused, then took a deep breath. "Well maybe one thing. Maybe it's that I grew up in foster homes, but I feel like people shouldn't be protected from themselves. If there's a good chance of getting seriously hurt or killed, then sure, but short of that?" She shrugged. "I knew damn well what I was doing at sixteen. Probably younger."

"I will agree with you on the general principle that people should not be protected from themselves but with a caveat, that the long term costs of not protecting them is not a detrimental burden to the rest of society. Thus it may be necessary to impose a degree of restriction, no matter how irksome to a minority, if the cost of not imposing such restrictions is significantly greater than the cost of doing so. Unfortunately no matter what our personal feelings may be on the subject, or our personal experiences or ability to cope, we have to govern and make decisions based on the ability or lack thereof of the majority, and I've no doubt that the personal circumstances of your upbringing has had an impact on your maturity and ability to cope with given situations. Each of you has strengths and weaknesses based upon how you were or weren't nurtured, some of which are evident from how you have behaved so far."

"I would disagree a bit. Up to a certain age is it not the duty of society to protect the children. Knowing and knowing are two things. You know what you where doing at sixteen but has a sixteen also the wisdom to know if what she does is good for them. I think that is the point that another person can tell. Some are at 16 old enough other are not." Cathal says. "And those that are not old enough need to be protected, even if it means less so-called fun."

"Of course society should protect children, Cathal. I simply disagree. I feel that sixteen year olds aren't children. I feel like if you protect them and coddle them like children then they act like children. Half the gamers at the party act like children too. When you protect people from consequences, they act like there aren't any. If a few sixteen year olds get drunk and do something they regret, so what? It's in the safety of the mansion. Anything bad that can happen can happen to an eighteen or twenty one year old. They're not any wiser, really. Not unless they've made those mistakes already or seen their friends make them. In which case, the rules preventing it already don't work. If you go to a university, you'll see people going wild because the leash is finally off. They do all kinds of regretful things. I argue that it's because they've never been taught, or even been allowed to party and have that kind of fun. The ones who end up getting hurt the most are the ones who were the most sheltered. Sixteen, eighteen, twenty-on even, I would challenge you tell me the difference other than a very arbitrary line of when it's okay to be irresponsible."

"I know that we're just having a philosophical discussion, but maybe we should keep at least some perspective. We're not talking about broken systems or fecked communities. We're talking about a party. What's really going to happen? We can use last night as an example. They'll drink alcohol, see people naked, maybe get naked themselves. They might have sex! Oh my God!" She tossed up her hands in mock panic. "These are all things they're likely doing anyway somewhere on their own. If they're wanting to go into a party like that, they've probably already done most of those things and know how to avoid the things they don't. And if they haven't yet, their already curious enough that they're likely to. So, what's the difference? It's not like anyone is luring anyone in. And this is an exclusive event in an exclusive place. Everyone is on a guest list."

"I'm sorry. To me, these kinds of protections don't protect anyone. But what it does so is give those excluded something to aspire to. It makes it all the more enticing. Enticing enough to do all of it anyway, just not in front of the people who are pretending that they're preventing something. The silly thing is that most of them all did it themselves when they were that age, and they all survived it just fine."

Rhiannon laughed. "You're joking right? I'll grant that for Mizzurian, there are laws to consider, and perhaps a more public attendee list. But here? It has to be more exclusive, and aren't we the ones who make the laws? The government is awful at parenting. Believe me."

"And that 'standard angle' has yet to be refuted. I'll go back to not protecting people from themselves. If they aren't sheltered, they'll be smarter and more self-reliant."

"First, Cathal, all that can happen whether the party is here or at someone's house. But you just revealed what this is all about, and it's patronizing. It's not about the drinking or dancing naked on a bar, is it? It's about sex. And specifically sex for the girls. Like we can't make decisions for ourselves. Yes, drinking makes everyone a bit dumber and more impulsive, but morning after regret is not the end of the world. Do women have agency or are we the cherished property of society. And the possibility of having sex with someone you might not choose to under different circumstances is true for men, women, whether they're sixteen or sixty. So what are you protecting? Purity? While you're at it, why not fidelity? So people are married can be barred also if they're not with their spouse. Are we the house of Amber or the bloody Catholic Church?"

Cathal looks a bit shocked at Rhiannon not knowing first what to reply to that.

"I do not see a difference here between men or women. A 16 year old might regret what does when he is drunken. And I'm not talking about a bit of regret. I'm talking about shame, about self-hate, I'm talking about peers that make fun of you, that tell what happened, who judge and rate. And I'm talking about people who with intention fill others up to make then drunken to make them do things they would not do otherwise."

"And yes fidelity is important in most relationships, because it is about trust. Not many can separate love and sex, not many who can lead an open relationship. If you want that and find someone who is fine with it, no, I have no problem with it. And I have no problem with someone wanting to have fun for a night be it a man or a woman, or if they are 16 or 14 as long as they are mature enough."

"Rhiannon, yes we are the House of Amber, and yes we make the laws, and yes we could set them to anything we wished and the population would have to either adhere to those laws or leave, or possibly take some other action. One thing history has taught us, well at least some of us, is that you have to govern by consent, and apply any laws equally to yourselves as to others."
"The complication here, which doesn't occur directly in Amber, is that we have to deal with a diverse population that expects certain things, and culturally there are differences according to their origins, including adherence to a given religious tenant. There are complications both in Amber, and in Remba, caused mainly by difference in their world views but also by the teachings of The Church of the Unicorn, and behavior which is allowed in Amber is not tolerated in Rebma. Even here there are complications caused by the differences between attitudes in the Medieval town and the Modern Town, so we walk a fine line in trying to balance all views."

In reply to Cathal O'Donoghue (msg # 48):

"Right. So we need laws to prevent people from making victims of themselves. Shame and self-loathing are consequence enough. They'll figure it out. And drugging people to make them do things they normally wouldn't is an actual crime, but that doesn't actually stop it from happening, now does it. And it's okay to have the environment for that to happen? And what about us poor helpless and utterly stupid girls who just can't imagine anyone would do such a thing. Once we turn 18, it's all good I guess. Shame on us for not being smarter. By that logic we should all be kept in our rooms until we're married. Do you not see the absurdity?"

"And the you just made my point for me. Fidelity is just as cherished as chastity and the consequences of violating it is far more disastrous to those involved and society. Yet, married people are allowed into these parties left to their own discretion. It's discretion that alcohol seems to compromise the most. Why aren't we protecting spouses? It's hypocritical, it's obnoxious, and it doesn't work unless it's also tyrannical. "

"Look, I'm simply arguing that we teach rather than forbid. Let people make their mistakes and then help them learn how to move on and make better choices. I can tell you, people are stronger and smarter than you want to believe. They'll learn. The problem is that this attitude of over protection tries to have it both ways. Protect, but if someone makes a mistake, then condemn. And those of us that had to suffer and learn on our own? Well, we don't count. For my part, I managed to avoid most problems because I wasn't coddled and the fear of what could happen if I wasn't smart was forefront in my mind."

In reply to Siobhan (msg # 49):

Siobhan's words visibly cooled Rhiannon's passions for a few moments. The new princess had to consider everything the queen was saying. With Cathal it was easier. He was from not just the same shadow, but the same country. The same city even. She grew up on the streets of Dublin. All that victimization was a daily occurrence, even in the group homes. Yet the laws and attitudes were geared towards blaming and restricting the victims. And those the system failed were simply ignored, like inconvenient truths. The laws were veneers to make the general society feel better.

"Siobhan, I wouldn't presume to know what it's like to govern anything, let alone a mix of cultures like you describe. All I'm saying is that for the pool party in the mansion with a majority modern guest list - all of whom who understood what they're walking into - further discriminating on age seems so arbitrary and hypocritical. Those from cultures who don't like that kind of thing, were not required to attend. And all of these other personal consequences were just as real for those only a couple years older."

"That's not what I said, Cathal. Not at all. You used the word 'she' when you first brought this up. And the chastity statement is what all this is driving towards. No one cares if people get goofy. And you're the one that brought up consent. This was and always is about people getting drunk and having sex. And sex is never viewed as bad for men. And being taken advantage of is usually pretty one sided also. You may not have meant to say it, but this is really what it's about isn't it? So people passing laws to prevent younger people from engaging in sex is enforcing chastity. Because, really, most of the time that sex is 100% consensual. And most of the rest are mostly consensual. Drinking makes it easier or more likely to consent."

"But I think it's clear we have different points of view on this and we're not changing each other's minds. I'm speaking from my experience, which is not yours, so we'll have to agree to disagree."

"Did I hear your say something about a Church of the Unicorn? What's that all about? I don't think Madison would be so keen on people worshiping the beast."

"The Church of the Unicorn is often more of a concept than a reality. You will find buildings scattered throughout Shadow that are both supposedly dedicated to Worshiping the Unicorn or are supposedly protected by its power. The 'Church' was something that Dworkin apparently started, whether he did in actuality is lost to the mysteries of time. The Church supposedly stands for a symbol of the Good and Righteous, a mechanism to aid and protect the downtrodden, and supposedly there are a set of sacred texts, except nobody ever appears to have seen them, at least as far as I've been able to discover. The degree to which people adhere to its supposed teachings or give credence to it varies from place to place. It used to be very popular in Amber but over the last few centuries that popularity has waned. It never gained traction in Rebma, although I believe it used to have some traction and a small following in the Courts."
"Like all myths they are not always based on the truth but a possible interpretation of the truth. Until the war, nobody, other than possibly Dworkin had even encountered the Unicorn, so none knew what we know now of it's reality. In the same way nobody, at least nobody that anybody, with possibly the exception of Dworkin, knew anybody who had encountered the Serpent, although now we know slightly differently, and again nobody even knew of the existence of the Phoenix, other than a few myths amongst certain peoples, or of the Kraken, again other than a few myths."
"Even now what we know of them is scarce and incomplete at best and may not be a complete reflection of their true natures, and may just be our interpretation of it."
"In a similar way to your disagreement with society over age restrictions, Madison has the same disagreement, based on personal experience, over the worship of the Unicorn, and as Cassandra put it, we're like 13 year old children trying to demolish a centuries old institution. There are somethings where trying to change perceptions based on a few peoples knowledge of the truth just isn't going to happen. Perhaps in time its worship will die out of its own accord, although like many cults that may be wishful thinking. There was, and maybe still is, a cult that worshiped the concept of Amber, and revered certain Amberites, in the Courts, a cult based on a mythical perception rather than any form of true reflection of either."
