I'd realized that it's been a hot minute since your band of misfits gained treasure so my apologies for that, but this should help correct the deficiencies.

And I've not been keeping the best notes (Something I'm trying to rectify with Obsidian). Does anyone recall when you last leveled up? I need to tally things and see when you'll be due for the next level increase.

Also, I think our young Xenophon is due for a bit of a make-over so he's not doling out single digits in the combats.

Let me see... Since we know the end result (L5) I won't bother going back to check in much detail. But I think it was after the visit / introduction to the fey / closing the infernal gate (L2 in 2019), after the first trip to the mines (Rescue the Miners, L3, 2020), after bandits, the curse, and the Moon Pool (L4, Still 2020?), and (I think) after the Werewolf Invasion and Timeskip? (L5, 2021?).

I'm not really sure, but it's been a while.

And I've been trying to talk Xenophon into a bit of a rewrite too! But we haven't even had time to do his talisman ritual...

Gerad normally makes each party member a device (Technically a Relic, but he calls them Talismans).

We had some discussion about it starting with post 975 over here: link to a message in this game

It was mostly awaiting having a break in the activity to perform the ritual, although a little more input on what you'd like to replace the Haste function (which you already have) and the ritual design (at least what sort of symbolism fits his background) would be helpful. Given that, we can probably make the time.

There are Eclipse builds that allow the use of 'full plate' without the penalties to speed, or reducing the Dex bonus. Considering a level-up seems to be in the offing, we can tailor it so Xenophon can take advantage of the armor.

John is wearing full plate and doesn't seem to be hindered at all.

Hm... For Xenophon...

Perhaps a set of Stances?  I won't get into the detailed mechanics, but in this case they will provide a set of L3 effects, one of which will occur when you wound an enemy in melee. Which effect that is can be changed as a free action, but only once per round.

The Bloodrune Spear Style (8 CP) offers the following four stances:

As the energies of a wounded flow wash over the complex runes inlaid in your spear they will take that power and answer your will!

1) Beasts of Blood: Summons a Dire Wolf to fight for you (As per Summon Nature's Ally in general, Caster Level = Your Level). If you happen to be fighting an undead creature the wolf will look either starving or skeletal, and if you happen to be fighting a construct it will seem to be made of metal, stone, or whatever, but the difference is only cosmetic. This is a great way to keep crowds back and to flank opponents though.
2) Drink The Heartblood: Vampiric Touch upon the creature struck.
3) Baleful Bloods Call: Attempt to inflict Bestow Curse on the creature struck.
4) Blood Poisoning: Attempt to inflict a Poison spell on the creature struck.

In all relevant cases the save is (13 + Cha Modifier) - although option 1 does not offer a save.

Is it possible to get a feat called Shield Mastery that allows 3 maneuvers?

Shield Wall: +2 AC when both the user and an adjacent ally are both using a shield.
Shield Slam: Full Attack to stun things, not versus things immune to criticals.
Shield Sling: Throw Shield with a range increment of 20', 1d6+Str or Ranged Touch to Trip.

Bloodrune Spear Stance doesn't seem like a bad start, it would help me survive a little longer in battles. Is it possible to have multiple stances as I level up?
Perhaps some feat or ability to negate the movement penalty that the new armor will bring?

Well, for Xenophon that's pretty straightforward. The website says "To buy  Stances you take a list of at least four combat boosts, and make them Specialized and Corrupted/you can only use stances totaling one-quarter of your invested points or less at any one time. This can, however, quite reasonably stack with the internal Specialization and Corruption of individual abilities – but the game master must ensure that all the stances are things that the user would actually like to be able to use at the same time. Applying “can only use a few at a time” to a list that includes social, crafting, combat, and research boosting effects really isn’t much of a limitation."

So with four stances you can only use one at a time. Buy another four (in this case for another eight points) and you can use two at a time - although if you've taken contradictory stances ("Wind Stance: I float into the air!" is not likely to work properly if you also activate "Earth Stance: I sink into the earth!").

So here are five more possibilities;
  • Blood Infusion Stance: Presence/Two L1 effects that apply to the user only. Your Armor is affected by Chitin Mail and your Weapons do damage as if they were one size category larger.

  • Graceful Bloodthirst Stance: (Presence, Specialized for Increased Effect / Two L1 effects that apply to the user only. Lion's Charge (May make a full attack at the end of a charge) plus Surefooted Stride (can move through difficult terrain at full speed, can run, charge, and tumble through such terrain as though it were clear terrain, and gain a +2 competence bonus on Climb checks) (2 CP).
  • Invigoration Of The Blood: Presence / Two L1 effects that apply to the user only. Floating Disk (the user may run a few feet above the ground - or above water - and Resurgence (the user gets a second chance on a saving throw once per round) (2 CP).
  • Vigorous Flawing Blood: Opprotunist / Each time you make an attack you can take a 5' Stop
  • Rage Of Blood (Awesome Wrath): +4 Morale Bonus to Str and Con, +2 Morale Bonus to Will Saves.

John is harder, simply because what he has is "Innate Enchantment: Force Shield" - basically the "Shield" spell. It provides a +4 Shield Bonus but it isn't actually a shield; it can't be maneuvered by the user, or grasped, or thrown, or anything like that. Trying to add functions to it is like trying to make a Flight spell carry along a bunch of rocks that you can then send out to attack people. That's a lot of Metamagic or a brand new thing. John has that because he's a two-handed weapon fighter, and so has no convenient way to use a shield - but still needed the AC benefit that came of using one.

Throwing a shield at people pretty much requires that you have a physical shield that can be thrown. That's why the Enterprise fires phasers and photon torpedoes, but never throws it's shields at an enemy ship.

That being said... I would presume that what you want is the functionality of +2 AC, being able to make a Full Attack to stun a target, and being able to hit or trip things at range. Ergo:

  • Metamagical Theorem (Power) with +2 Levels of Streamline, Specialized and Corrupted / Only to enhance Innate Enchantments, only to enhance Force Shield. This boost to the power of the Force Shield spell allows it to be either be enhanced or be discharged for a round (Until the user's next action) to fuel other force-based effects. No more than seven such tricks are available in total.  (6 CP).

Possible Effects: 1) Shield Wall: Additional +2 Shield Bonus to AC, 2) Shield Bash: The user may take a full attack to slam the shield into a target, stunning them. Each round they get a Fortitude Save (DC 12+Str Mod) to recover. 3) Destructo Disk: Hurl the Shield as a ranged touch attack (30' increment, 2d6+Str Force Damage plus any one Combat Maneuver, no save), 4) Guardian Shield: Extend to benefits of your (Basic) Shield to all allies within 10', 5) Damage Shield: Your shield absorbs the first 20 points of damage you would take this round, then drops. 6) Binding Shield: You may hurl your shield as a net of force to Entangle a target (30' range increment, ranged touch, save  (DC 12+Str Mod) each round after the first to escape, and 7) Create a Force Ladder effect.

Now that's more than a bit cheesy - and the GM might call for three levels of Streamline or a second Metamagical Theorem (likely Elemental Manipulation), (raising the cost to 8 CP) instead of two, but would something along those lines work for you?

Absolutely. I need to expand my portfolio to ranged and utility attacks, emulating a set of powered armor. I can make it either a Force effect, or Sonics, which I have been experimenting with. Or perhaps I ought to make the Shield a relic? Create relic allows up to 4 cp of relics, and I have only applied 1 to my basic armor.

By the way, how do I increase the number of functions in the armor? My current Armory is 7, based on my Str Modifier.

Wasn't your Shield effect from normal Innate Enchantment?

Raising your Armory skill would probably involve actually buying the skill, rather than getting it through a Relic (which I think is the current method). As an Occult Skill it will basically wind up costing an extra 6 CP / SP along the way, but you could just build it up to your current skill limits.

I've been meaning to ask, I've been having trouble trying to find references to some of these websites.
I did find the Eclipse - The Codex but some of the items/stances you are mentioning are not there. Can you link me some websites? (Don't wanna continue asking you guys the obvious questions)

But, for stances and all that:
I didn't really have problems with movement but I did have trouble with AC.
So, for now, I think that I'll take the plate armor and the Bloodrune Spear Stance for the level up.

There are some things you'd need the wayback machine for of course (if they made it there).

For the most part though the stances I provided are simply substitutions for the spell effects - "Here's a way to build a Stance that applies two first level spell effects to the user". Pick two spell effects, slap an appropriate name on it, ask the GM if it will work in his or her game, and you have a stance. There's also one for "applies a third level spell effect on a hit (sometimes a Critical Hit if the effect is too good. For example, the Vampiric Touch might be considered that way), so slap in your effect of choice and there you are.

That's the fun part; invent your own!

You would need at least four stances to use one, unless you just buy it directly for 6 CP - in which case it's just an ability and pretty much always on.

On checking my stuff for group bonuses...

Gerad's associates currently gain:
  • Armor and Shields are treated as one category lighter for movement and special ability purposes, have their armor check penalties reduced by two (zero minimum), and gain +2 bonuses.
  • The use of seven Charms and three Talismans (The minor items from The Practical Enchanter)
  • Their mounts, pets, and familiars gain special bonuses, but I'm not sure anyone else has any. (I think Khorolf technically has one, but it has never appeared).
  • +2 to Persuasion and Insight.
  • Are considered to be using masterwork tools and references wherever this is relevant.
  • Get +2 SP and +1 HP at this level and per each succeeding level. (This is permanent even if Gerad gets killed since it's considered to be a training effect).
  • Get +2 to any single attribute of their choice.
  • Weapons get a +2 bonus and may be considered Adamant, Silver, or of other non-planar special materials.
  • Need not worry about minor expenses and basic supplies.
  • If it matters, these are "Wealth" bonuses, and will stack with pretty much everything.


Anyone who wishes to take Mystic Link with Power Link (To Beckfyrd) (6 CP) gets the benefits of the ward. You can look in the "Buffs Of Record" thread for information on that. Unfortunately, the Prayer effect will not penalize enemies outside of Beckfyrd, but everything that applies to the characters will work.

Wow. I knew about the +2 bonuses the MW tools and the ditty bag. Everything else is need to me. Making my weapon Adamant will be useful, as well as the other effects.

 +2 skill pts and +1 HP per level 6 and up? Cool.

+2 Insight and Persuasion? Useful.

+2 attribute? Nice.


Does John need to 'pay' for his future bride as a Companion?

I can't tell about your bride there, but the extra +2 on your armor, shield, and weapons should be helpful too - although admittedly the AC more than the weapon bonus where you've already got big bonuses. Still handy on secondary stuff though.

And it's mostly that this particular set of bonuses is based on his hit dice - and he's been buying extras in various ways. Ergo, this set of bonuses is now maxed out.

Mounts and pets and familiars gain some levels of Magical Beast, and attribute bonuses, and so on. So if you buy a horse, it is much more likely to remain alive.
