Tahldar's capacity to deal with the fire giant is limited.  He doesn't have any sound or poison based spells.  He's certainly immune to fireball, but I suspect lighting bolt as well.  And even if he isn't he's likely to save against it for half damage.  Which is roughly about the same damage as magic missile.

The description does not state that he is immune to lightning bolt. Of course, he is vulnerable to cold attacks.

Sadly, I have no cold or acid based spells.  I didn't want to meta game knowledge of what the fire giant is immune to.  Regardless, I'm sure he'd make his save and the damage from a saved lightning bolt is about the same damage as my magic missile does.  So I'll stick with magic missiles till I run out.

I looked through the treasure list and there are no mage scrolls, but I did see a couple of priest ones.  But to get to them Kahan would have to pull out the portable hole.

There is an Ice Knife spell in the spellbook we found on on dead bodies in the alignment room, that's what Shae was referring to. I'm not sure where it is right now, if Tahldar has it or if it's in the hole though.

The ice knife spell is in a spellbook in the portable hole.  Tahldar would have to learn it to cast it.  Which I think takes a day to do.

Not sure what the spell does, but Tahldar does have his bracers which can act as a dagger +3.  I'd be surprised if the spell was better than that.  But doing 1d3+3 against the giant is about the equivalent of a biting mosquito.

Actually I believe you can cast spells out of a spellbook much like a scroll, except you would lose the spell forever. Not sure if that's worth it but the point is moot because we can't access it.

I think Tahldar has the mage spellbooks and scrolls. I imagine Kahan or Shae have the cleric ones.

Yes, you can cast out of the spellbook directly and it will disappear from the spellbook.

For Ice Knife, we can use the new rule (modified slightly), rather than 2nd edition (which seems rather weak):

You create a shard of ice and fling it at one creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 piercing damage. Hit or miss, the shard then explodes. The target and each creature within 5 feet of it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 cold damage.

At Higher Levels: The cold damage increases by 1 point for every spellcaster level above 1. (2d6+1 at level 2, etc.)

Since this is technically a first level spell (though powered up below), you could take it as a first level spell the next time you get to choose a new one...if you used up the one on the spellbook instead of scribing it.

FYI, there is no save vs magic missile.  The only defense is a shield spell.

For big boss battles and similar encounters, I will often give you some stats, including HP. I debated whether to do this many years ago, but then figures it gives you a good sense of how weak or strong the individual will seem to be, and the level of injury (as well as toughness/AC) would be somewhat apparent to your PCs.

Tahldar can hold his breath for 3 rounds. 2 when exerting himself.

Between Kahan and myself I would think we should be able to carry everyone over without the need for the portable hole. We could even carry the doppelganger with ropes too as long as we stay out of his anti magic range.

Kahan can hold his breath for 5 rounds, 3 if exerting himself. I was suggesting we use the portable hole to get through the tunnel, because I'm sure Sark and Geebo have low Constitution scores and won't be able to hold their breath as long as we can.

You can certainly get everyone across without any difficulty. It's what will happen on the far side and the tunnels to come that will be the real trick.

Are you saying we should all hole up in the portable hole while Kahan carrie's us further north? How much air is in th hole? How long can we last?

Also, if everyone piles in the hole, sans doppelganger, I could fly us across. Then we throw a rope to our non magic friend.

Then me and Kahan switch places in the hole.

Yes, that's what I was planning, depending on the amount of air inside. Is the doppelganger still alive? I think the only problem would be Geebo, because he still has those antimagic rings on. We could always chop them off, but that feels like a bit of a harsh way of dealing with them. It might be the only way possible, though.

I might be able to fly Geebo over the chasm with ropes. As long as he's over 10 feet away from me I might be able to do it. I doubt I could for the doppleganger.

I only mentioned the portable hole so you could see the inventory in it to see if there is anything usable.

Is it not possible to transport people in it then? I've done it in other games, just for reference.
