Hello!
Hello, and Welcome!
There really is no such thing as a "typical" RPoL-er -- we are all atypical in our own delightful ways. That said, I get what you mean about having prior play-by-post experiences. RPoL, however, has its own distinct culture and etiquette, so make sure you look around at the stuff in the FAQs and Help, just to be sure you get off on the right foot.
I'm not much into Pathfinder, but there are other folks here who love that system and games go on all the time around here.
Of the systems you mentioned, Star Trek Adventures would be closest to my interests, but enough about me. Let's talk about you.
If you want to just get to know folks, check out Community Chat. That's the place for innocuous-getting-to-know-you chit-chat.
Finding games? That's done by looking at ads in Wanted - Players, or by posting an ad for a game you want to play in Wanted - GMs.
You might also try looking around in Game Proposals, Input, and Advice. Prospective GMs put up proposals there for games they might want to run to gauge interest. Expressing interest in those is a great way to get in when a game is just starting up.
If you decide to run a game or three yourself, the tools here are unique to RPoL and make organizing and running a game much easier once you know how to use them.
If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask - lots of folks hereabouts will be happy to help you get started.
Above all, play and enjoy!
