While I understand the concern of underage persons getting access to adult content. There has to be some process of adult verification other than waiting an obligatory week. This doesn't even ensure perspective people are of age and frankly discourages and causes people to search elswhere for a game because they have a week to do so. Is there some other means of expediting this procedure which doesn't even ensure the applicant is of age anyway?

Last I knew it was two weeks?  This system works a lot better than the old one does too.  But welcome to the site thatís worth the wait.  You can take the time to read the site rules.  Search for games if interest.  Play in General or mature games.  Just get the feel of the site.  Use the Community chats, watch for games in the Wanted Player threads and ask for a specific type of game in Wanted GMs.

I assure you that the Admin donít just sit and then say the waiting period is up.  Because yes, if they didnít do some checks then anyone can lie about their age.  This site is very well managed by Admin and if those that get impatient and move on then that is up to them.

A player gas but one login to make for here.  Make more than  one and that will get you banned.  But with the ease of one login you donít have to make multiple emails for every single character like most other sites do.  Your login is permanent so if a player goes off to other sites they can always come back here.  You are welcome to play on other sites but few are as old and as strong as this one.  Its up to the player what other sites they want to play on.  So those impatient ones can go, come back, or not as that is the players choice.

Yeah that makes sense and I understand. I was only curious as to if there was a verification process option other than the wait. Either way thanks for the responses.

Wait once, never worry about it again.

Hell, I waited 18 years, the first time. 14 days is nothing, after that.

Now that I'm home, I wanted to add something that didn't get mentioned in ladysharlyne's excellent post.

One of the reasons for the wait period is to avoid sock puppetry. It prevents someone who gets banned from Adult games (either because they're underage or because they can't behave themselves) from making a duplicate account and hopping right back in.

Honestly, there's no great difference between games run under the Adult setting and those of Mature and even General content. I rarely tag my games Adult, Mature is plenty for my style. It's like the difference in G, PG, and R MPAA ratings for movies.

And, as tmagann says, it's just two weeks. :D

Cool thanks, I guess it's just the nature of the game system i'm looking into, they all seem to be marked as adult. No big deal on the wait it is what it is. At least here seems to have some means of age verification which is more than some places do I imagine.

I have never understood why most games are tagged Adult. rom what I can understand, the only real difference between Adult and Mature is the ability to have graphic sex or violent imagery, which most such don't actually have. I've even seen them specifically excluded in some game rules for Adult postings.

Maybe the problem is less the proving we're adults than the overuse of the Adult Rating. I think what we need are stricter guidelines on when it's necessary.

I run Adult games.  Not for Sex or graphics.  There are a few reasons I as one person run my games this way and have for over 17 years here.  First I run closed threads so only those in the game can read it.  Why, call it poetic license or whatever.  Characters are created by the players but there are those and many that view characters and copy them word for word for other games.  Also I have had on more than one occasion my whole game copied thread for thread.  Of course the good Admin got those changed but I will always run my games whether Adult or Mature with closed group threads.  If you want to read our stories join the games.  Yes, there are still those that join, get neat characters, disappear and show up in cast lists of other games with that same character.  You tell me.  When you create a character do you want them completely copied by someone to lazy to write their own characters out?  Also language and actions are private to the game.  If a player in adult wishes to fade to black in a love scene that's just fine.  If a player doesn't want to read the love scenes which I keep in their own group then I don't give access to that group at the request of the player, no problem.  But the rules set forth here in the RPol rules and FAQs are clear and strict enough.  All you have to do is follow the rules. :)

But you run actual adult games. Most that use the rating don't, in my experience.

AHH Thank you.  But if you were in one of my games you might think the same thing.  Though I run Freeform so I don't know anything about System games if they have had the same problems. Hmmm  But we all have opinions.  I only wish all the new players here find what they are looking for storywise and just enjoy the site.

Happy Gaming

Tagging a game as Adult that's really intended to be Mature can make it so the GM doesn't have to police what might fall on one side or the other of that dividing line (per site policies) so hard.

If your story narrative veers from Mature into Adult in an adult rated game you can take different approaches to get it back where you want it.

If your story narrative veers from Mature into Adult in a mature rated game, you have to take very specific actions in order to keep your game in compliance with the established site policies.

I believe I've also seen it mentioned at some points by different site users that it's used as a filter of sorts.  For whatever reasons they didn't want players who were minors in their games.

It's so we don't have to worry about content at all, there is no line left to cross. Largely it doesn't matter on the player end either. You verify once and then it's done. It's a GM's market so it's not like I have to worry about players being turned off by it.

We have an Adult Games Policy which explains exactly when an Adult rating is necessary, and describes types of content which require an Adult rating to be in place.

Note, however, that none of those types of content are compulsory in every Adult game.

A GM is entirely free to decide to run an Adult game which, for example, doesn't contain graphic scenes of sex, violence, drug abuse, etc...  It's his game, and if he wants to run a Tales of the Riverbank game with an Adult rating, that's his decision to make, and nobody else's.

Oh, I get that, in theory. But the reality is that if a GM wants a Mature game, but lists it as Adult, he or she is opening it up to the very things a Mature rating would bar.

It just seems counterintuitive to me. "It's an Adult game, but don't post Adult content" doesn't make a lot of sense in my mind.

Then again, neither do a lot of things that are part of everyday life, so ...

From the GM's side, it's a lot safer to have an Adult rating just in case players cross the line, than risk losing your game because you rated it too low.

I'm almost 100% positive that the rating applies to every little bit of communication that takes place in the game, including players' OOC PM conversations with each other. Some people have no filter, or very poor filters, when it comes to the things they like to talk about...so sometimes, even if it's not part of the -game- it's part of "the game" in terms of abiding by the rules of RPoL.

And, again, that is the GM's choice, just like everything else about the game.  None of it has to make sense to your mind (unless you are the GM).

If he opens it as Adult by mistake, he can always remove any Adult content later, and change it to Mature.

If, however, he wants to deliberately use the Adult rating simply to restrict access to that game to people over 18, we are NOT going to tell him that he can't run an Adult game without adult content (any more than we would tell him he can't run a Fantasy game unless it's D&D).

It does. But even the standard crit table for Only War MIGHT qualify as "graphic and gratuitous violence".
