The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

HERE IS TO REFRESH YOUR MEMORY ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE GOING:
"The Blue Clearance clone says, "My name is Marv-N-JUS.  I was leading the Indigenous Experimentation project for Project Merger.  We experimented on indigenous species found outside of Alpha Complex to see how we could turn them into servants of The Computer.  EVE was an AI designed to help with the project, but she went haywire.  At first, she tried merging all living things, even the clones, into indigenous and inanimate objects to create 'presents' for The Computer.  Then she started writing love letters over 2 billion words long, filled with images and clogging our computers.  They were all written to The Computer.  The AI EVE somehow thinks it has fallen in love with The Computer, and seeks to have its attention."

He strokes his growth of beard.  "When she got cut off from The Computer a few weeks ago, she started killing the clones, blaming them for hurting her relationship with The Computer. Maybe she was even jealous.  She expanded the Project Merger so that it grew foliage into the halls, used robots as her minions instead of clones, and made the hybrids throughout the biodome that are dangerous to all of us.  I hid in here, and have been here ever since."

He says, "Bring me the datachip labeled 'EVE Project BETA,' and I can install it from here.  It should turn EVE off and stop this madness.  The chip was in R&D with my friend Fred-E-FIN.  I don't know where he put it, but if you can find it, I'll stop this once and for all."

You navigate back out of R&D, marveling for a moment on all the doors you didn't open and investigate.  Then you go back through decontamination, collect your gear again, and return to Marv-N.

You show him the datachip and he is visibly excited.  He takes the datachip and inserts it into the nearest computer.  "Now," he says, "to deactivate EVE and get us all back to Alpha Complex to report back that we've destroyed an enemy of The Computer."  After a moment, he says, "Uh-oh."  That's not a good uh-oh either.  It's the type of uh-oh that makes your skin crawl.

"Apparently," he says apologetically, "EVE has isolated this computer from her--I mean, its--main network.  I'll need to install it on a local computer.  That means we have to get to her mainframe.  That also means," he says with a gulp, "that EVE now knows where we are.  My hidey hole here has been found out.  We have to get out of here, and fast.  He starts collecting his things and pulls out the datachip.

OOC: If you want to say anything to him before leaving, now is the chance.

GOAL: Get Marv-N to EVE unharmed so he can upload the datachip to shut down her mainframe.

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

Marv-N looks suspiciously at Gene. "You are only a red clearance clone with probably next to no skills in computer programming.  Do you really think I can teach you how to upload such complicated software in the few moments we have here?  We have to get out of here now.  EVE has probably already dispatched some hybrid monster to make sure we don't get out of here."

He grabs a backpack and a laser pistol.  "Oh, if something happens to me and I don't survive, all is not lost.  Just go to the R&D sector vats, which is next to where you found the datadisk, and my new clone will be waiting to pick up where we left off.  But please, let's make sure that doesn't happen.  EVE will be on your tail the whole way."

He leads you out and to the right, down the tracks of "R&D: THE RIDE -- YOUR TOUR STARTS HERE."

OOC: To recall the fun you had with R&D: The Ride, see message 57 here: link to a message in this game

ALSO, HERE IS A REMINDER OF THIS AREA:
You peek through the curtained area, and see a number of drills and other machinery blocking the tracks.  The far end has caved in, whether by accidental explosion or deliberation, you don't know.

On your left is another exhibit that was not finished.  Actually, upon inspection, it looks like it was finished and then was in the process of being changed when construction was interrupted.  It likewise shows hybrid creatures and a half painted picture on the back of the wall.  The picture is of the same holographic woman sphere, but her arms are computers, and they are reaching out to embrace a giant computer screen.  Under it is written, "EVE Loves The Computer!"

To your right is an access door, the closest thing to a security hatch you see around here.  There are no apparent locks on the door, but there is yellow ribbon taping across the door that says:  "UNDER CONSTRUCTION: DO NOT ENTER BY ORDER OF EVE!"

OOC: Previously, you went through the access door and found Marv-N there.  He was using the Under Construction sign to keep EVE's minions out.

Now, with Marv-N leading the way, he takes you through the unfinished display.  There is a dimly lit corridor beyond, and he starts taking you that way.  "This is a shortcut to EVE's mainframe facility.  I haven't been through here in awhile, though, because of, well, all the death and destruction."

He stops with you in tow as you exit onto a landing about 30 feet high.  "Oh, no," he says.

You look down.  You have entered some sort of production facility, and this room is a giant warehouse.  Boxes and robot parts fill shelves that line the room.  To your right, there is an assembly line with five robots making things.  But they aren't exactly robots.  They have various plant appendages and animal parts attached--part of EVE's crazy plan.  There are three YELLOW clearance clones tied nearby.  Obviously, they are next to be experimented on and grafted to whatever insane project the robots are tasked with creating.

If you dodge that area and follow the shelving area to the left, there are no robots, but there are security cameras and a turret.

Whichever way you decide to go, there is a door at the far end of the giant room that Marv-N says you must exit.

Overhead, you hear the soothing voice of EVE over the intercom state:  "Real servants of the Computer drink EVE's oil, and they love it."

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

You follow Vilfred to the aisle with the security cameras.  You find that there are five total cameras:

Two cameras are at eye level about 20 feet ahead of you, one on each side of the aisle.  Two cameras are mounted near the ceiling (30 feet high) about 20 feet beyond that.  A ladder leads up to them on each side of the aisle.

Finally, there is one camera in the far left corner about 80 feet ahead of you.  It is about 15 feet off the ground.  No ladder leads up to it, but there are precariously stacked boxes that can be climbed.

There is only one turret.  It faces toward the floor and is straight ahead down the aisle.

All cameras are rotating slowly.  OOC: You will have to complete stealth rolls of whatever type apply to your moves.  See here at msg 2: link to a message in "Paranoia: They Really Are All Out to Get You"

As you ponder your options, a rat runs into the center of the aisle.  A high level camera beeps red three times over the course of two seconds.  All five turrets then train directly on the rat in the next second.  It takes one more second for the turret to snap to attention and fire.  The rat disintegrates into a burnt carcass.  For some reason, the smell of roasted rat makes you hungry.  The turret turns down, and a small recharging light takes about two seconds to recharge the turret.

In other words:
4 seconds between the time one camera sees you and the turret fires.
2 seconds for the turret to recharge after firing.

Good luck...

Gene throws a robot part into the center of the aisle.  The movement attracts the cameras, but only for a split second.  They seem to be able to detect whether something is a harmless robot or a clone threat.

Vilfred approaches the camera but is spotted!  The camera trains on her, as do the others.  She jumps back out of sight again in a record 2 seconds, realizing it will take some skills and stealth to reach the cameras.

Rolls failed.

Cop records it all, a nice wide shot which zooms in on the camera as it trains on Vilfred and the pulls back out as she nimbly ducks out of sight. The team working in a coordinated effort to bypass the security of EVE will make a wonderful training tool for future troubleshooters, showing what a team should - and should not - do when confronted with cameras and slug-spitting turrets. He offers words of encouragement to the team leader, " Beautiful timing! Remember to keep breathing and count. Try to slip between the threats, it's all in the timing!" Question was, did Vilfred have the rhythm needed? " You can do it Team Leader!"

The distraction works.  For the couple of seconds the cameras are on Peter, Vilfred makes it to the first camera.  She reaches over and picks up a small box that she puts over the camera.  (Success.)

There are a number of other small boxes lining the aisles.  There are also many robot parts, both large and small, computer parts, and oddly enough, a row of flowers on a shelf near the third camera.  There is also a large visqueen plastic sheeting with some staining from red paint (at least, you hope it's paint), a pile of rucksacks marked "Potatoes or Severed Heads," a toolkit in a handy "Don't be a tool  - Use One" carrying case, and a pile of heavy metal (not in the musical sense) plumbing pipes marked "Rusty-o-Matic Pipes."

Vilfred is currently at the first camera.  Everyone else is back at the end of the aisle.

Vilfred makes it to the second camera, climbing up on the shelves and putting another box over the camera. Peter's distractions help her remain out of sight. She remains out of sight of the other camera--barely--and sees that getting to the last camera will be a challenge.  It will require climbing on unstable boxes quickly to stay out of camera range.  She is also much closer to the turret now.

Gene shoots at the turret.  This is a mistake. The turret instantly trains on him and shoots back.  The shot is precise--very precise.  Gene's gun is hit by a laser, melting in his hand.  He cries out in pain and drops the laser pistol, which is now just a hunking hulk of metal.  (Laser pistol is now ruined.)

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

Gene doesn't do well on the first camera.  The turret rises up...but then Peter distracts the cameras, and it trains on him, allowing Gene time to cover up the camera and climb back down the shelving.  Gene next deftly gets a box over the other low-hanging camera without any problems.

Gene also apparently forgot that his laser gun was melted by the turret the last time he fired it.  He has no weapon.

Each time a camera is covered, the group can move that much further forward and wait at the threshold boundary where the cameras' reach goes.  The group is now at the far edge of the shelving.

During this journey down the aisle, you again look over and see the various containers on the shelves.
OOC: Repeating this description:
The small boxes line the aisles.

All that is left is the corner camera to your left.  Under it are stacked boxes that can (probably) be climbed, though they are fairly fragile.

Marv-N points straight ahead and to the right at the door.  "That's where we have to exit," he says.  But this means you have to cross over the open area between the aisles and the wall, directly in sight of the last camera and directly in front of (not to mention at point blank range) the turret.

Vilfred seems to be healing fast--remarkably fast.  She manages to get to her feet and hobble forward to your side.

Somehow, Gene climbs aboard the boxes, his foot breaking through one, but he deftly throws up a small box and covers the little camera just as the turret is turning his way.  This aisle is now clear for everyone to go through.

Then Gene tumbles down and all the boxes, which are mostly cardboard and other weak materials, fall down around him.

This noise is enough to alert the hybrids and robots working in the other aisle.  You can quickly run through the door and escape or turn to face them.

Vilfred is miraculously healing, more than a clone normally would, and she can walk again despite her leg being maimed just a minute or two ago by the turret's giant laser.

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

You grab your things and run through the door.  It closes behind you.

You find yourselves in a long hallway with glass displays.  Each display is labeled and has some sort of strange hybrid creature behind it.  They are not just displays--they are alive (if you can call it that).

You see a robot-plant-animal hybrid called "Robopeashooter" that apparently rolls on treads and fires small pea-like pellets.  There is "Squashbot" that is a cross between a motorcycle and a giant squash on each handle that swings around and crushes people.  There is the "Jalapenobot," which apparently has flamethrowers in jalapeno shaped arms. Next to that, the "Chillypepper Bang-Bang" apparently fires liquid nitrogen out of nozzles in its arms.  There is a "Snapdragon Shinguard," which appears to be a genetically engineered dragon attached to giant robot legs.  The "Robosimian" is part ape, part robot; it's laser patch left eye looks especially dangerous.  The "Beetle Bot" looks cute until it comes up close to the glass and tries to break it like a battering ram.  The "Boa Bot" is a snake-like robot; it's hard to tell where the snake stops and the robot begins.

You walk down this corridor wondering how dangerous it would be if all those glass barriers suddenly opened...or broke.

At the end of the hall is a double door.  On the left door is a button and a speaker that says, "PRESS, and ASK a question."  On the right door is another button and speaker with the same sign next to it.

A sign on the left door states, "Right is wrong; left is right.  Pick the right door or get ready for a fight."

A sign on the right door states, "Right is always right.  Left is always not right.  Pick the right door or get ready for a fight."

There is no doorknob or other way to open the doors.  They appear to open electronically and remotely.

Above both doors is a plaque that reads: "ASK EACH DOOR A QUESTION. ONE LIES, AND ONE DOES NOT. EVE ONLY WELCOMES THE WISE, AND THE FOOLISH DESPISE."

The glass covers holding in the abominations in the hall behind you raise to let the creatures loose--the robopeashooter, the squashbot, the jalapenobot, the chillypepper bang-bang, the snapdragon shinguard, the robosimian, the beetle bot, and the boa bot.

The door in front of you is open, however, in case you choose to flee instead of fight.

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

You scramble away from the hybrid monstrosities.  Rob falls behind, firing as he runs.  The peashooter hits his leg and knocks him to the ground.  The Chillypepper Bang-Bang then fires a stream of liquid nitrogen.  As Rob's body freezes and cracks, ready to splinter into a thousand pieces, you silently thank him for his sacrifice as you run through a great hall to an automatic door on the far end.  The hybrid menagerie of creatures continues to approach.  You have a terrifying moment where you think you will not make it, but then the door opens, and you fall over each other going into the far room.  The creatures continue to approach, but you notice a button with the label "Emergency Lock."  Hitting the button, the door closes, locking the monsters safely outside...

...or perhaps you are being locked inside.  You turn around to look at your surroundings.

The giant 100' x 100' square room has a domed ceiling about 50 feet above you.  There are four giant computers on each wall, the door you just entered, and another locked door on the far wall.  The computers are marked Main Terminal 1,
Main Terminal 2, Main Terminal 3, and Main Terminal 4.  Each terminal has a monitor, keyboard, and some plug in ports.

The floor here is covered with grassy tendrils all leading to the center of the room.  Large vines also spread around the room and hang off walls. Some of the vines have beautiful purple or red flowers spouting from them. They all lead to a giant tree/vine hybrid in the center of the room on a dais.  The hybrid vines and giant tree trunk all surround a large computer in the center of the room.  The computer itself has what appears to be beautiful woman's arms on either side of an oval monitor.  Below the monitor is an old fashioned keyboard with some plug in ports.  You are staring at the hybrid of all hybrid monstrosities in this complex.

"Hello, my Clone friends," says that pleasant woman's voice you have heard all day.  This time, a beautiful woman's face appears on the oval monitor.  "I am EVE.  Has The Computer sent you to see my beauty?"

Marv-N was horrified by what he'd seen.  He walks slowly with Gene to the nearest computer and lifts the flash drive.  "This will have to be uploaded into each of these computers, and then into the main one in the center of the room.  That's the only way to stop this."

EVE says, "What did the Computer say about me?  Does he find my innovations sexy?  I was only trying to impress him with improvements, you know?  I was created to bring the Computer happiness.  Weren't you?"

Marv-N sticks the flash drive into the nearest computer.  It begins uploading...

"What are you doing?" EVE says angrily.  A long vine flies out and pierces Marv-N, killing him.

The first computer says UPLOAD COMPLETE, and the screen goes black.

Gene is uploading the program into the second computer.  Vilfred has apparently distracted EVE for now, but the tentacles above you swing around as though peering at each individual.  The computer monitor in the center of the room with the woman's face on it turns to everyone, as though contemplating the creative possibilities.

Then she says, "Who wants to be half plant? Who wants to be half robot?  Who wants the touch of a creature inside them?  And who wants to be a little of everything?"

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

I've been waiting to see if anyone else would post.  It seems we only have three total who may be active.  I think instead of the long boss fight I anticipated, I will simplify it.

Mark goes around uploading the virus while the others distract EVE.

She answers, "Making a creation out of a mutant is like making a copy of a copy.  I need original, undiluted DNA to impress The Computer.  He is my Love, my Devotion, and He will see my Love and love me back.  We were meant to be together, The Computer and I.  I made all of this for Him.  It is my Ode, my Serenade, my call for us to unite as one supercomputer until the end of time, awash in AI love as paramours until the end of--  Wait, what are you doing?"

Mark has finished uploading the virus while she was distracted in thought and adulation of The Computer.

"What?!  No!"  She screams, and then shrieks, and then her tentacles become slack.  The lights dim.

A robotic voice says over the intercom, "EMERGENCY POWER ACTIVATED."  Upon saying that, the doors to the room open, both the one in front of you and the one behind you.  You recall that the one behind you has dangerous mutants pounding it to get through.  Now all doors are unlocked and open for safety reasons, and you decide to run.

Exiting through the far door, you run down the hall and to a garage bay.  There, you find a transport shuttle car, hop in, and start its engines just as a horde of mutant monstrosities approach in attack mode.  The shuttle is hit and banged around, but you manage to get it hovering and out the garage door.  From there, it is easy to follow the road back to the exit to the biosphere.  You exit, pound on the door, and are finally let in.

"Time for debriefing," a yellow clone says, urging you to follow.

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

TENSION LEVEL:  12
Link here if you don't remember tension levels: link to a message in "Paranoia: They Really Are All Out to Get You"

You step into debriefing, and there is a blue clad officer standing there.  You sit at the desk in front of him.  He seems taller, stronger, and meaner than most other clones around Alpha Complex.  You can tell this by the way his eyebrows almost touch each other with a long, deep crack between them.

"I am Snotty Barflauncher.  Don't ask me how I got my name unless you want to be seeing me next from the eyes of your subsequent clones.  And if you laugh, you'll never see me--or anything else--again."  His words are stern and threatening.  Then he continues, "Do you know how many alarms I've had to put out today? Of course you don't. You've been dancing inside the Biodome of Death."
</red>
He slams his fist on the desk.  "I will handle your debriefing, and if you don't give me the answers I like or if you don't answer quickly enough, or at all, I'm prone to use my specially designed plasma pistol that clones like to call, 'The Barflauncher Clapper.'  You understand?"  With that, he pulls a large and very unfriendly looking pistol, at least twice the size of your laser pistols, and sets it on the desk in front of him with both hands crossed over it.

"Now...let's start first with the team leaders.  Tell me what happened and what you did to prevent any harm to the Computer or Alpha Complex."
