Fantasy Arena & Slice of Life RPG - D&D 5e

Welcome, Exiled...

Your characters are the Exiled: individuals banished from their homelands for their own personal reasons. Whether it was voluntary or as a punishment, they embarked on a long and ominous voyage on the sea that never seemed to end before arriving near the beautiful island kingdom of Liara. Here the Exiled are contracted to participate in the combat games of the Gilded Arena. As gladiators of the Arena, they are expected to perform for the people of Liara and its mysterious immortal Wizard-King Emery Stormborn, first of the Exiled. Exiled are given the option of fighting to the death or fighting for fame and riches as they are forced to adjust to their new lives in this strange and foreign land. As Exiled, they are not limited to being gladiators, but are welcome to take other jobs and contracts, explore the uncharted regions of Laria and its surrounding islands, and even purchase property or open a business of their choosing. What will be your Exiled's tale?

Greetings, all. Welcome to Tales of the Exiled, a Fantasy Arena RPG using D&D 5th Edition. This game is inspired by the arena games I used to play on here that introduced me to D&D, many other games such as the Baldur's Gate series, Elder Scrolls, and Dragon Age, fantasy life sims, and more. This game will not be revolve around a typical campaign of adventuring and fighting a singular BBEG at the end. Instead, I'm hoping to create a game that is part character builder, part role-playing, and part storytelling adventure with no shortage of combat encounters alongside your typical dungeon-crawling and wealth-pursuing exploits. I'm looking for players who would be interested in non-combat encounters too, like using their charisma to influence politics, or maybe manage a farm, or open an adventurer's guild in Laria - players who don't mind thinking outside the box and indulging in some slice-of-life elements to the game such as farming, fishing, hunting and foraging. For more examples, I'll be implementing many of the downtime activities introduced in XGE and would love players who are open to using them as well.

Players will create their characters and introduce them into the setting, but will have options for what to do with them. Players can focus solely on the Arena, fighting for the amusement and approval of the crowd or just testing their builds. You can choose if you want a character to live or die, if you want to retire them and build a new one, or make them into an NPC or companion that works for you in the background. The Arena will not be the only opportunity for combat, as Exiled are also permitted to go on Expeditions, take up additional Contracts for important NPCs, or pursue wanted Bounties on the criminals of the kingdom of Laria - often other Exiled who have shunned the Arena and choose to commit crimes and terrorize the innocent instead. Though this game will be largely driven by player choices, potential players are expected to be team players and PvP will not be an option unless agreed upon by interested players. I'm also expecting players to have a desire to team up with each other so that I'm not managing a bunch of solo threads at once - I won't mind a duo teaming up but a party of four or more Exiled are likely to garner more attention, more contracts, which means more loot and gold to go around...

I'm looking for a maximum of 6 players preferably not new to D&D 5e or PbP gaming and who are not just looking to min-max but instead get creative with their builds, use the often-neglected skills like Animal Handling and Performance, and build their characters up in a non-traditional style of adventure that may sometimes spill into fantasy life simulator. Of course, I will be open to players who strictly want to build characters and recycle through them in the Arena, but my hope is for players who will also want to indulge in the many side quests, downtime activities, and mysteries I have planned for Liara. I will be a bit picky with RtJs as I'm hoping to have a consistent, open-minded and active group of 6 and might open up more slots in the future depending on how the game progresses. I'd also consider taking on a co-GM if anyone would be interested in world-building, running encounters, or just keeping their GM skills sharp in the absence of in-person games like I am. I hope to see you in the Gilded Arena of Liara, Exiled!
