Ok? so a watched a Movie on Amazon, called 'Curse of the Dragon slayer'

now? i' sure critics  would tear it apart. But i liked it. Orcs..Dwarves, elves   and a Cleric  that can use  a sword!

I liked the Cleric, because  he  had that  'ends  justifies the means'

I think Roy would like it, because the Orc  make up as  done  pretty well,The Dwarf  was, mor like a gnome, to me.

The story was  decent. It not  'lord of the rings'..but its something to watch for  the genre/

In reply to Admiral Hack (msg # 960):

It's rare to find a well-made fantasy movie, especially if you're not adapting from an already successful source material like LOTR.  I've seen a lot of them that looked pretty cool...but that's about all that could be said about them, because the writing was definitely not anything noteworthy.  Cringeworthy, perhaps...

I still have a real fondness for Dragonslayer.  The effects are a little dated, now, but it was absolutely brilliant when it came out, and they managed to do what so many fantasy films forget...they made the story about the characters, and not the setting.

Glad you made it there and back safely, Lizzy.  It's a lovely thought, that she's forever with the dolphins now, and I would imagine there's some degree in comfort with that.

Pauses to draw breath.

Woken at zero-dark-thirty by dearly beloved wanting to know the time. His talking watch wasn't talking. Scurried around, got a new one (turned out the electronics had died) and a new watchstrap made - he needs custom ones because he has huge wrists. Then offspring on the phone wanting to access the Bank of Mum and Dad - they are moving for work and need to pay a deposit on the new apartment - says they have sufficient only all their money is tied up in expenses incurred staying in a hotel for the new location, hasn't been paid back yet & needs the deposit NOW! And then a student turned up. He starts with me as a final year project student in September but wants to get everything straight in his mind now....

Hence needing to draw breath and come here for a moment of relaxation...

Re: OOC #  34

The Movie' Curse of the Dragon Slayer' is very  misleading. It should have been called the Curse of  The Shadows, something like that.

don't get me wrong, its  not   a Movie  You'd spend  the money to go see at the theater . But for Amazon , or Netflix?.. its  good.

I have a Habit, mostly because when i grew up. Iw atched the Movies   for the story  and monsters, or heroes  ect ect

I Like John Carter of  Mars.  sure? John Carter was a  bit 'wooden' but it  fit his  character's back round... I found on Netflix, a Movie  built of 'Princess of Mars' and it was very bad..the aliens  weren't evry good, and the actor  wasn't  worse( in my opinion) then the Jon Carter Guy,

so?  I watched the   movie and there are  parts i didn't like, some  'fights' were a bit goofy , but? I liked it.. I'll watch it  again  sometime.

Heck? I liked the first 2 Fantastic  4 movies , because they were  true to the Canion ..i have never watched the third  one, and never will, that was a joke, MArvel should have stopped that.

Looking forwards to the MCU version of the FF.
.................

Mila.  Man! I know the feeling, when i was  still working it wasn't too bad, but now i am retired  it is alot harder to help..Son (2nd)  ex is  worse then the first..Destroyed their house  with no housekeeping, and south-like ways... and a drunk..she is bleeding him  for money, and  the  lawyers   on ourside , don't seem   to be trying hard  enough to turn the table..when they  stayed  with me, after  their  other hosue burned down.. I  was near mindless with  what was happening to my house..IT was good my wife  wasn't alive to see that episode!!

..............

Heck Folks...RL sucks  , alot of the time, some times  more the others... and?when the good stuff happens, its  important to  relish  that.

so?..never  be  afraid to Gush or rant here , I don't think there is a person in our  game, that won't  understand, !

Re: OOC #  34

I have very mixed emotions about John Carter.  I don't feel like it was as bad a movie as it's been treated as being...but it suffered from very high expectations.  I mean, ERB's Barsoom novels are about as close to classics as you can get from the era of pulp novels, and a very devoted fanbase had been waiting a long time for a good adaptation that did the series justice (and they're still waiting).  The movie itself wasn't bad...a little stilted, perhaps, but following after the Harry Potter adaptations and LOTR, both of which were largely faithful to the original source (dropped a lot of superfluous content, and in the case of LOTR, tweaked several character details to reflect the different sensibilities of a modern audience), John Carter was a huge letdown, as they skipped some of the better scenes (that really helped define the character more clearly) altogether and MASSIVELY changed the story and made the Therns some kind of interstellar mafia looking to acquire more and more territory. So the devoted fans that should have led droves of friends to the box office either saw it once and swore off it altogether or heard about it and didn't go in the first place.

And while they picked someone with a good look for the leading man, he really doesn't have the acting chops for the role.  I've seen him in three or four things and he comes across as rather stiff and mechanical in all of them...he's got a good look, but he just isn't natural in front of a camera.

I have to watch it the same way I watch the Disney version of The Three Musketeers.  The names are the same, the plotline is vaguely similar, and some of the events are the same...but it's NOT the 'real' Three Musketeers.  As long as I can divorce myself from that, and overlook Chris O'Donnell's attempt at D'Artagnan, it's actually a pretty fun show.  Same thing with John Carter of Mars...I just have to remind myself that it's (very loosely!) based on the novels, but it isn't the same story.  And I have to excuse a well-intentioned attempt at playing the lead character, which fell short of the mark.  If I can do that, I actually rather enjoy watching it...as long as I can keep myself from getting riled up at the thought that their attempt to try and spin the original story into something a modern audience should find more attention-grabbing (in the producers'/director's minds) means that it will be decades more before anyone works up the nerve to try it again (hopefully with more attention to sticking to the material that actually made the story popular in the first place.)

Re: OOC #  34

yep yep...   I came from an Age  where  Godzilla  was great, and I watched  Hammer Films   with  Peter Cushing and Christphor Lee

but  i am very prejudiced  when it coems  to Movies.. I ahte slob humor movies. and   movies    with Cops   or  drama with love triangles,  you better have damn good  acting   and somethign like action for me to pretend to like  it.

now? Sci-Fi and  Fantasy...they were beat down for  years  by scile  and  Ebert and othe r critics  who would say " we seen this before"

no kiddign?..to mindless dork!... why don't you say that   about the slow  moving Dramas, or  the  'buddy' cop movies... they are all the same template to!

I have the DVD ( it might be on Netflix?) of 'Hawk the Slayer"..70's movie, with some   fun interaction of  a D&D ish party fighting a bad  guy.. the Dwarf and the 'giant' have some good Moments..My grand  kids liked it, even though the  special effects were   terrible.. its still one of   my favs.

Re: OOC #  34

I vaguely remember seeing that...one of those 'so cheesy it's enjoyable' fantasy movies.  The 80s weren't kind to a lot of genre fare...most fantasy movies from the period were more about getting the most athletic-yet-shapely leading lady into the skimpiest costume possible, and getting the most muscle-bound guy they could find to do the least realistic swordsmanship possible without completely losing any semblance of competence with the weapon.  There were a LOT of fantasy films made in the 80s...and most of them were utterly forgettable, and would probably never have been made had it not been for the explosion of home video rentals and the direct-to-video market...B- and even C-movies, at best.

But every so often, they made one that actually stood out from the crowd and was, at the very least, not terrible...several of them were quite enjoyable, and a few of them were actually kind of good.  I already mentioned Dragonslayer.  Another couple that come to mind are Beastmaster (which was actually heavily inspired by a sci-fi novel of the same name...the movie was swords and sorcery, the novel was laserguns and psionics...), Conan the Barbarian (Conan the Destroyer was a valiant effort at a sequel, but they were more interested in name recognition than believable acting, so they cast Grace Jones and Wilt Chamberlain, who both made valiant efforts but never felt quite plausible), Willow, Legend, and Ladyhawke (with honorable mentions to Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal).

Sci-fi fared slightly better, largely because Star Wars and Star Trek had given the genre credibility that was scant prior to the late 70s...but there were a LOT of bad sci-fi movies made in the 80s, too.

I always enjoyed Hawk the Slayer - comments about greedy dwarves and some of the archery scenes were hysterical.

However, on the whole I prefer series to movies. More scope for development.

Yes... Logan's Run and Willow are fun too.

Met Warwick Davies (who played the title role in Willow and also had a role in Star Wars, one of the Ewoks) at Gen Con UK one year. He was a Guest of Honour and was brought round to where I was running Living Force - a Star Wars living campaign, I ran the UK operation, I mentioned that my offspring, then about 6, loved Willow and when I came back to the Living Force stand later I found an autographed photo of him in Willow costume waiting for my offspring!

Later found out he was selling them for £20 a time :)

Oh, and guess what? Dearly beloved's watch decided to start talking again! So now we have a spare.

Re: OOC #  34

there are alot of neat stuff from the 60s and 70s. and so many of them are called 'campy' now? but were pretty good  back then

Willow  was good, i hear they want to make a  squeal

.... one  thing( and my brother ruined this for me)  was  realizing the show  could never reach its goal.

There was a show caled  'The Invaders'  when you killed an alien..they just  vanished in Light, so there was never proof...I starte watchign it, because it came on after  some of the WWII  weekly shows ( Rat Patrol, Combat, Gallent Men).

anyway. i was bummed because the  hero had  an alien that was  going to  help him expose the threat... and the guy had somethign stupid  happen, Like a car hit him or something...My Brother says.." You know  they can't do that, ebcause that will be the end of the show!"

That's  what bothered me  about Voyager ,,, if they got home..it was over?

I  mean? even at my young age  I argued, " No they could have  for real battles then!"..but he was right, show didn't last long.

Re: OOC #  34

I never read any of Burroughs' work, and didn't see the movie.

But, I did go through a bit of a 'Sword & Planet' phase, when I got into the novels of Leigh Brackett.  Specifically, her books about Venus -- she created such a good setting for that world.    Great writer, on the whole, for the time period & genre.

She wrote the first draft of The Empire Strike Back, shortly before she died.    Lucas ended up not using it, but still credited her, out of respect for her work.

Sci-fi & fantasy both, I'm more into novels and series rather than movies.  If I start talking favorite movies, none come from either genre.

I was pretty big into BSG, and then The Expanse in more recent years.   On the whole,  though, I lean more on the fantasy side -- this is one of the few sci-fi rpgs I've played in, for example.

Babyalon 5 , i don't think i ever  saw the whole series..always lost bits  and pieces because  of   things  goign on. I did  watch alot of them on that goofy 'ME  TV..they used to put  2 episodes a  day on, i saw some i  missed, but then missed others.

I was never Much into Battlestar Galactica,  I didn't even try to watch the new one, i would watch a show  here  and there..

Expanse is pretty neat..i binge watched that

i sent for some Sci-FI dvds  a few times i the early years of this game... Hoping to come up with some  things that would add to the game, but most of the stuff they have wouldn't work here.

In the end? there is really no bad  sci-Fi or fantasy, unless it  makes a spoof....n we  need  movies  that  are directed  and  porduced to be real movies, , not just a lark.
