PARADISE SPACE
Roy thought for a moment, then shook his head. "Nah...stick with the girl who brought you to the dance," he muttered under his breath. "We've got the bridge landing. Send the AI after the engineering section and let them see what kind of damage they can do, send the Gava and Felrites amidships to wreak havoc. Based on some of the comments before we launched and some of the chatter, probably best to warn everyone to stay well clear of the Hangar areas. Sounds like they're gonna be a shooting gallery, and someone's just about guaranteed to hit something that's gonna spit a lot of fire and shrapnel." Not to mention the fact that it would be downright embarrassing to have someone try to swing in through the static field for a Hangar Dec assault, only to immediately come out again on the nose of a launching fighter...
He turned to the rest of the shuttle crew. "We're landing forward, target's the bridge. If we're really damned lucky, the fact that these ship designs are all a thousand or more years old means they haven't built up boarding countermeasures and might even have the bridge right next to the hull...but don't bet on it." He hadn't noticed anyone looking particularly nervous, and they'd pretty much all seen boarding action at some point...but this was the time for the pep talk.
"Angels have been telling us about their heroic battles and mighty warriors ever since they landed on Earth. First, they pretended to be the gods of our ancestors...later, they acted like magnanimous benefactors. But their stories were always about how long they'd been fighting the Demons, how terrible the Demons were, how great the Angels were." He paused, looking around at the crew.
"Well, we found out pretty fast that they lied about the Demons. The Demons were even worse than they told us...more horrific and bestial, but--with a few exceptions--nowhere near the great warriors of the Angels' stories." He winked broadly in Zob's direction, adding, "Nothing personal, Zob...every rule has its exceptions, after all." He chuckled a little, less in amusement at his own words and more in the sense that it was a good time for some tension-breaking laughter.
He waited for anyone else who reacted to settle down a little, then continued, "Now we're facing off against the Angels...the ones who treated us like little children, spoonfed us enough technology to make us useful to them, and panicked as soon as they realized that we were far more capable warriors than they ever dared imagine. The ones who decided that we were so scary that they needed to ally with the Demons...the same Demons they've been paying a blood tribute to for a thousand years or more. The same Demons whose asses we beat back and forth across the Delta quad. They want us to think they're the greatest warriors to ever fly through the Black...well, I think they're full of shit. And today's the day we prove it!"
