IC: (Fate) Transhuman Space?
I've just opened up a spot in my RPOL games, and '"m trying to think of what I wanna do next...

I'm real comfortable with Fate games and I'm thinking of a science fiction game.   I have the PDF (and just ordered the physical book) for Mindjammer....

Any interest in a transhuman space Fate game?

IC: (Fate) Mindjammer?
Do players need to own it to play, or are free-and-legal online FATE resources sufficient?

Always interested in transhuman play... not so sure about FATE.  I'm not proficient with the rules (it's been ages since I've played that was 1e Dresden at that).

But if i don;t have to have the books to muddle along, I'm game.

I cannot speak to the legality of how you obtain your source material.

I do kinda feel that you really will need access to the book to be familiar with the setting and navigate through the relative complexities involved.  I don't know what those complexities are yet.  I've literally just purchased the PDF.  It's going to take me a week or two to absorb much of it.

I may opt for a Fate Core Space Opera option instead, but I'm eager to look through Mindjammer first.   I haven't done a good transhuman game since GURPS Transhuman Space (first edition) was released...  and I never quite meshed with the Eclipse Phase system...

ANd Hey... I ran DFRPG (Pre-Fate Core) for several years...  So, I getcha!

I've skimmed the core book and would jump at a chance to play this.  I'm also more into the transhuman setting than the system, but jait's forgotten more FATE than most of us will ever know so that shouldn't be an obstacle.  'Going post' right from the beginning would be great, since those are the characters you don't get to play in any other games.

I just found this (it's free), I'm grabbing it, hopefully it'll give a good overview of the setting.

Drivethru RPG has a FATE version of the free preview, too.

I am interested in a Transhumanism game, do you know yet if you plan to play high end, or more slightly modified modern?

It would be fun to play without having the book, via a PC that starts with extremely limited information about the universe, and slowly acquires it through exploration and experience in the campaign...  :)

Okay, I've read this book, skimmed it actually, and it's really focused in on Ship Actions (things to do on a ship) and Mindjamming.

Is there a place in the game for a PC with no access to the Mindscape?  Or is that like asking to play a blind-deaf-mute?  I really haven't done more than scratch the surface of the genre and system, but if the Mindscape is just a glorified AR system and PCs can can get by without being "enmeshed" I am very intrigued.

Otherwise still intrigue, just less happy about having to learn a whole nother subsystem...

In the Mindjammer setting, inability to access the Mindscape would definitely put anyone at a disadvantage. How severe would be something for the table to decide. You could easily have a group of characters who are outsiders to the civilizations at the setting's core, but then it really ceases to be a transhuman game.

The better choice would be this one, as it utilizes the FATE rules and is also free...

FATE's a fiction-driven game so they didn't hide any setting-defining features behind a 'whole nother subsystem' - you just take an aspect that represents an implant that lets you interact with the setting's FTL internet.  It can be more complicated, but doesn't have to be if you aren't playing a hacker.

OtOH, there are 'barbarians' from recently contacted lost colonies and even some characters from the most advanced societies suffer Mindscape implant rejection.  If most of the table were to 'go post' at chargen (push push) you could even play a kind of neo-Luddite who tried out posthumanism but now rejects it and wants to live a simpler life, Space Amish style.

So there are options for a mindscape-less character in an otherwise 'standard' trans- or posthuman party if that's what you want to play, but you don't need to fear complexity of the crunch dictating your character's fiction.

Thanks!  I didn't even notice the Traveller branding...

And in Dresden Files the magic isn't a "whole nother subsystem" technically, but as you note, not being a Mindjammer means things are less complicated.  Which is what I meant.  Skip being a wizard in Dresden or a Mindjammer here, skip the extra complication of delving deeper into the rules than I might want to.  (It depends on how long of a wind-up before this game kicks off, I might have just read all that by then).

And I actually have a thing for 'space amish with a gun' type characters, the ones who eschew cyberware/neural interfaces/etc, which was my last 'space c-punk/transhumanist" character.  Of the course the one right before that was a 'remote-drone pilot/security/digital counter intrusion specialist' who was basically a brain in a box, so I'm not wedded to the style.

So there are options for a mindscape-less character...

That was more a question aimed at jait, since they're running it, if jait doesn't want the hassle of an 'off-the-grid' character, that informs whether I pick up the core book and players guide or not.

Yeah, good point.  Hopefully they're on board with us resurrecting their idea a month later

Re: IC: (Fate) Mindjammer?
I've been away from rpol for a bit.  Still not really back yet... But hoping that by mid October I can start ramping my existing games up.  Only then will I be able to consider maybe starting another one.

I got the book, and, yeah, there's a lot of focus on being a ship or a mega-construct.  But those are just options to help define the potential scope of the setting.    The setting is what we say it is.  And in that, the players get a huge amount of collaborative power.

My initial inclination is to do a sort of mesh of Farscape & Altered Carbon.   One or more baseline humans (or minimally post-human) get re-sleeved and brought into this setting, and have to find a way to make it work with the others who are definitely post-human.  The question then becomes... Why?

The premise can't be a closed-box because this is rpol and I'd be looking for new players on a pretty frequent basis.  So, the hook has to be something that can allow new players in without bending the story to make it happen.  But it also needs to have a strong enough premise to keep the existing characters in the story.

Will give it some thought...  If you've indicated interest, I'll send a message out when I'm ready and see who's on also ready...  No stress, no pressure.
