Amber

So, other than the original player that suggested I post on this site, I've had no response to my Amber Thread on Off-site Gaming.

This either means there is no interest in Amber at all or that people are not interested in the AiRP campaign, which of the two Introduction to Amber Campaigns I have, is the more developed.

Whilst it would be my preference to re-run this campaign, I am potentially open to re-running the pre-cursor Keep of the Thirteenth Hour(Rodian War) campaign.

I should point out that both of these campaigns are very much aimed at new players to both the Diceless and Amber genres, although that shouldn't really make too much of a difference. Neither of these campaigns are what you may call "Traditional" Amber campaigns.. almost of the tropes for rehashing the Pattern Fall war have been done to death.

If you're a massive fan of the books/genre then be prepared to forget everything you think you may know!

If you know nothing of Amber, or even if you do, but want a heavy RP game then this may just be for you. The Rodian War campaign has potentially more combat that the AiRP campaign, but the starting point for both is the same.
In both cases the characters know nothing of anything Amber or Shadow, or at least in most cases know nothing. Again the Rodian War campaign is slight less constrained, except that all of the characters have never been to Amber, or the Courts, and have never been introduced to or met any of the Family. There is a very good reason for this which will become clear almost immediately!
In both campaigns the characters will need to learn how to use any of the True powers like Pattern, and all of the lore relating to the Amber setting. The Rodian War takes place 5.5 years after the End of the Pattern Fall war, and the AiRP campaign 5 years after the end of the Rodian War.

The Keep of the Thirteenth Hour campaign has slightly more flexibility with respect to character creation as outlined in the Campaign Guide. It also has a lower requirement in terms of the number of characters I need in-order to run it, 3 as opposed to 5 for the AiRP campaign. The relevant details for both Campaigns are my website along with the Amber rules (based on the Netbook of Amber) I use http://www.azer.co.uk/amber/amber.html

In reply to Larson Gates (msg # 1):

I know very little of Amber, and have never played the game, but have heard references to it for years.  If you're okay with a newb, but one who is a reliable poster, I'd be in.

1.I've listened to the first two books in the series, but wouldn't say I know, or understand much, beyond the whole multi-relms thing, and  the closer the relms are to Amber, the more solid they are.
2. I've done a little free-form, but I don't think that's the same thing.
3. Colore me interested, but  I might not be the best pick, having never played Amber and having none of the RP books on it.  I'm guessing having those books might be helpful?

No, while small, RPoL has fairly lively and vocal Amber group.

... or that people are not interested in the AiRP campaign...

That would be it.  Or at least from my perspective, that's it.  It's actually to respond your other thread in order of "worst" to "least" reasons why I didn't bother to respond:

Posted in Offsite Gaming

Okay, this one isn't that important to me (but Isuspect it may have deterred most other people who'd have posted), as I actually read the Offsite Gaming forum, but if we're here on RPoL it's probably because we enjoy gaming on RPoL, if we wanted to be elsewhere, we'd be elsewhere already...

quote:
I am potentially trying to setup an online(Discord) rerun.

Most of us aren't here on RPoL because we want to play on Discord.  Okay, it's probably just me speaking for me, but that's two "I'd rather play elsewhere" comments from a GM and those are kinda red-flagish.

quote:
Your House Rules for Amber

Your rules are pretty far removed from Amber.  I mean, they're certainly far, far, far closer than a completely different system would be (Like D&D), but once you've broken down the Attributes into sub-abilities (which can trump an attribute), mundane Skills, the restrictions of the Auction (and an DMNPC in the Auction?), and your Powers?  Yeah, you've stepped quite a distance away from any Amber I'm interested in.

It might be a really great take on Amber rules, but I'm not bellying up to an Amber game (whose rules I know and understand) to learn a new set of rules, whys, and wherefores.  I don't have the time to figure out your system.

quote:
Taking over a character will entail a swathe of reading and catching up.

No.  I'm not interested in taking over someone else's character, let alone reading years of posts and threads to "get caught up" to play someone else's character.

quote:
The starting point is with the characters knowing nothing of anything Amber or Shadow, and learning both how to use any powers...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not interested in spending a year getting to the point where we can now play the actual game we signed up to play.  And that's if the Character even survives long enough to finally figure out how powers work...

quote:
If you're a massive fan of the books/genre then be prepared to forget everything you think you may know!

As a massive fan of Amber, why would I be interested at this point?

Note, I'm all for interesting takes on Amber, "Corwin lied, the Merlin tales never happened" or even further removed takes, but they're still grounded in playing Amber, the political/social combat, the physical struggles, the investigation, Chaos versus "Order", a family divided, etc.  I have no idea how much you're throwing out or keeping, but saying "forget everything" doesn't fill me with the idea that you're running an Amber style I'm a fan off.

From the azer page preamble:
quote:
There is still much I'd like to do in terms of this site but I never seem to have the time...

This (and the rest of the sentence) makes you sound super-duper busy and I can no longer count the number of Amber games I've seen start here and then die just as we get out of the Auction because the GM has discovered they are "way to busy for the amount of work this game will take, sorry, lol Real LifeĀ™ right?".  Just an FYI, starting your game pitches with "Hey I'm a busy guy" isn't exactly a selling point for a GM, I mean, how are we supposed to know the azer site isn't up to the level you want it at?  Looked just fine to me.

And there we have it, the "why I didn't bother posting" in your Offsite Gaming thread on the small chance you might consider the option of potentially restarting a campaign here that doesn't sound like I'd be interested in even if 5-7 of us tried to convince you restart.

(This may have sounded a lot harsher than I mean, but this post was mostly aimed "why you may have gotten zero traction with your previous thread", and well covers why you got zero response me.)

I share Evileyore's views almost entirely. Almost
  • I share his view on the community, and the rules
  • I share his view on RPOL vs discord: I am here because play by forum allows me to take time in my posts and do a far better job of roleplaying than a tabletop.
  • I never ever take over someone else's character. Ever. (tried/failed/tried again/failed/never going to do it again)

The first place I differ is that I quite like the idea of 'learning the powers'. I like school games. I like games with development in them. I love watching on movies 'spiderman learns how to use his powers' and so far I've never experienced that in RPOL (I run a game where this happens, but I've never played it)

The second place I differ is 'forget everything you know about Amber'. Well as long as nothing violently breaks canon, I'm cool. If we are in a world with different rules... then it's a different world and not breaking canon. If we have a discovery that there is something behind the scenes... well that is totally in genre and happens multiple times in the book. But if it's 'Benedict is the strongest and Gerard is a dab hand with a rapier' forget all, then I share evileyore's views.

I think you could address these issues quite easily, but I think evileyore has captured why you had no interest. I would have interest if you could address the rules issue and make sure that it's actually an Amber game, or a totally different game with similar cosmology and made it clear which

I’d actually be very interested in an Amber game but….

First, I don’t read the Offsite Gaming forum.

Second, The rules changes don’t look good to me.   To the point where I doubt I’d want to play anyway.

Third,  I’m not really interested in playing on Discord.  Another forum - maybe, but this site is so well adapted to online play, I really prefer it here.

(Starting in “the real world” is a bit of a negative to me, too.  Not a deal killer, but it’d take me longer to work up a concept).

Also bear in mind that, per the forum rules, if you are posting a game proposal here, it HAS to be for a game that will be run here, on RPoL, not at another forum or on Discord.

So, if you are planning to run the game here, no problem.

If you are planning to run it elsewhere, then you get your one post in Offsite Gaming, and that's it (all discussion/replies for offsite games must take place offsite).
