Ben Scristos:
I think Dark Sun was the one location I most wanted to play in, and never got the chance.
I played in a very brief Dark Sun campaign, but our group made the switch to Rolemaster and that was the end of that game. It seemed like a cool setting though.

I had one experience with the oriental adventures and found it fun, but I am a bit of a fan of Japanese stuff to begin with, so that helped.
We made OA characters but never really knew what to do with them and that game never went anywhere. Those characters were essentially still-born.

I felt the Ravenloft world was poorly done, which is a shame because the original module was awesome. It is very hard to teach someone how to create a sense of suspense, even more so when so many players are smart-arse jokers. I had some luck with suspenseful DMing, but mostly when the players were new.
Ravenloft is another setting I never played, but always heard great things about. Like you mentioned, I don't think any group I have ever gamed with would have done well with a horror/suspense setting. Far too much joking and tomfoolery going on at any table I have sat at, myself definitely amongst the jokers!
