Face of a New Enemy Part 2

2:00 p.m.

20 DAYS UNTIL QANTARIATE INVASION

DAY 6 ON MAHG MAR

With the scout ship now at the Moraes and the repairs of the Moraes now under way, you have two potentially off world ships available (when the Moraes is done). You also have the 2 aircars and the explorer.

Bartja has completed repairs on Shemp, and the robot is ready to go. Bartja is currently working on decoding and getting information off the scout ship. That should take the rest of the day and then he could travel the next morning.

The work on putting Hammer into the Moraes will still take some time but Bartja does not need to be there for that to continue.

From Dentin's crashed ship, you have Gregor, M'Kix, and Vadim. S'krllk and Bartja are also here after staying on the Moraes during the scout ship operation. Desi and Orvo are also here. Porter is still in sick bay recovering. Dr. Appleburg is also attending to duties at the Moraes, along with the crew of the Moraes (minus the captain and engineer who are being held captive).

Here is the list of crew at the Moraes:
Mormord Massod (Moraes crew member), Brogod Omborg (Moraes crew member), Sporss Krekrek (Moraes crew member), LeGrange, Dr. Eddie Appleburg, and Bogan Doorem (Osprey cook).

Captive are:
Missing (north): Winston Marlboro (Moraes captain) and Pradi Innesti (Moraes engineer), Captain Dentin (Osprey Captain), Dentin's crew (5 potentially survived and captured), .

You also have some new equipment (check the first as well as later posts in the Scout Ship operation).

UPCOMING POTENTIAL TASKS/OPERATIONS:

1) Rescue Marlboro and the engineer/Find Sathar base up north

2) Rescue Dentin and his crew

3) Finish trying to integrate Hammer into Moraes (in progress

4) Decide what to do with Terry's stuff from footlockers (mechanical footlocker is at post #47); S'krllk needed more time and was interrupted before being able to open the lock of the other footlocker

5) Decide on any further inventory issues as per post 8 here: link to a message in this game

6) Find out more and visit with Notui

7) Investigate glint south of Bartja's crash

8) Repair Moraes (crew/LeGrange is currently doing this)

9) Return to site at river where you saw the shiny giant gleam below the water. (COMPLETED: Found scout ship)

10) Investigate EMP/Pyramid (investigated and then retreated)

11) Further explore the scout ship and try to open its safe

Unless one of the other UPF personnel calls for a meeting very quickly, Deisraye will step up and make that call."All personnel!  I would like everyone outside in 15 minutes that can be torn away from the multitude of things we have going on.  Fifteen minutes, please.  Thank you."

She waits until everyone is gathered and begins.  "I wanted to make this as short but, factual as possible. We have a ton of things going on at one time here, all seemingly with the sense of urgency.   I think the priority right now, is to get our people back from the Sathar from a northern base camp.  We can't, we won't leave our people behind to the worms!  Dr. Appleburg, anything you can tell us about the camp you escaped from and to where you believe it may be located in reference to where we found you?"

Vadim looks to the others, "Not sure how much intel we have but we do have a approximate direction and I'm pretty sure enough firepower.  Might just have to do a reconnaissance in force and play a rescue by ear.  In any case I think we should go as soon as everyone is armed up."

Face of a New Enemy Part 2

Everyone gets themselves organized and discusses next steps.

Bartja is able to find out the following about the scout ship:

Most of the data files are incomprehensible because they have been coded and firewalled. They will need to be examined by experts in the Frontier Worlds. However, he is able to decipher some of the data and screen displays:

1. The ship's log indicates a series of visits to several local star systems. All of these flights originate and terminate at the same distance from the central star of the FS 30 system five light minutes from Mahg Mar.

Those who were on Dentin's ship note that this is the approximate distance they were away from Mahg Mar when their ship was attacked, so this appears to give coordinates to the mothership.

2. The radio log indicates strict radio silence except for one transmission which is broadcast to a point which you pinpoint as one hex southwest of the point marked "center" on the Mahg Mar terrain map above.

3. The astrogation log records the star route from the FS 30 system to Mahg Mar with a stop at the same location five light minutes from Mahg Mar.

THE FLIGHT AND OPERATING SYSTEMS

No ship like this has been encountered before. It is apparently of recent construction and advanced design. The following specific information is particularly significant:

1. The drives and astrogation systems are built on principles similar to the latest Frontier Worlds designs. It should be possible to operate the scoutship with a UPF crew even for a journey outside the planet atmosphere.
2. All systems appear to be operational. The engines have been recently overhauled and the ship appears to be ready for action.
3. Drive, astrogation, engineering, and maneuver programs suggest a high level of automation of routine operational tasks.
4. The controls are designed to accommodate operators of varied races with different manipulative limbs and senses.
5. The absence of ship's weapons and the high acceleration capability are atypical of known Sathar craft. Sathar apparently can withstand accelerations of up to six gravities for an indeterminate period.

SATHAR SCOUT DESIGN

This is a special design that balances its unusual abilities (superior maneuver and acceleration) with distinctive liabilities (no armament and weak hull).
The Sathar scout ship is unarmed but maneuverable and capable of high acceleration and maneuvering. A scoutship carries a crew of four Sathar, plus robots. Scoutships are capable of atmospheric flight and can land or take off from shore or underwater.

You determine that the ship could be modified to hold up to 8 passengers if you have about 3 days to make modifications.

Length: 40m
Width: 10m
Hull Size: 3
Hull Points: 10*
Wing Span: 50m
Hatches: 1
MR: 5
ADF: 6
DCR: 29
Engines: 2 A-rated Atomics
Fuel: 1 loaded, 1 in reserve
Weapons: None
Defenses: reflective hull
Life Support: main and backup—capacity 6
Communications: videcom, subspace radio
Detection: radar
Computer Programs:
-Computer Security Alarm
-Installation Security Astrogation
-Computer Lockout Life Support
-Damage Control Atomic Drive
-Information
-Storage Robot Management

* Hull Section structural points only 100 +2d100
All security, alarm, and computer lock systems are at Level 3.

Other Discoveries:

You find that you are currently unable to crack the tablet but can take it with you in case something helps you crack its password later.

You are able to open the safe (msg 64) that was in the Scout Ship, where you find a charger that can help you charge the tablet.

You also find the following in the safe:
-10 EMP Grenades (will affect electronics, some security, screens and suits (so don't get within its radius), some gear, and some robots) (5 meter radius)
-2 EMP Pulse Pistols (can be aimed at electronic equipment for taking out only desired objects) (10 charges each, affects 1 meter radius)
-Small Spider 3 robot (0.5 meters, retracts into compact form for transport, can be programmed to fire small laser at designated target (2d10, 20 shots; 50 to hit); 20 Structural points.
-1 vibroknife with lightning charge (acts as normal vibroknife but can shoot electical charge (lightning) for 3d10 dmg with pull of trigger--can be combined with melee or used as ranged attack (treat as spear or thrown object).
-A datastick which will take a few days to decipher. The label on it in Sathar is a pronunciation equivalent to "Qantariate"

Everyone is able to use the recombinant regeneration tube (RRT) (see http://wiki.rpol.net/?id=6687/NEW%20EQUIPMENT ) to be fully healed and ready for action the following morning.

In response to Desi's questions, Dr. Appleburg confirms that the point indicated by the communication (one hex southwest of the center on the map) does appear to be the accurate location of the Sathar base. He was drugged and subject to the mind control chip during most of the time, so he remembers very little. However, it is a very secure facility with Sathar, robots, and security. Anything mechanical within the perimeter of the main circle above the treeline is likely to be detected long before it arrives at the base. He suggests that the party either go from the circled perimeter to the base on foot or other small transport with as little power as possible.

NOTE: For game purposes, if you take an explorer, aircar, etc., there will be a chance per hex that you are discovered, and that chance is exponentially higher if you fly above the treeline.

Dr. Appleburg also suggests that there are likely others being held captive as well, most likely for their expertise to help with the Qantariate issue, though he cannot vouch for what state they will be in.

OOC: Anything else you want to do or should we advance this to the next morning, get your team ready and geared up?

orvo will take an EMP grenade and vibroknife, which he actually has a skill in. His doctor training has somewhat given him skills in using blades that extends beyond just a scalpel. He suggests Bartja might want to try his hand at the spider robot.

Orvo can also take the tablet and charger in his backpack for future use. He is working on his technical skills (using XP to gain a computer skill).

"I think we now know very close to where the Captain and others are being held. We can take an aircar in close and hump it from there. Don't they also have glijets? If they can get us in undetected, then maybe we can get in without interacting with the dangerous fauna. Maybe the scout ship could be used to get us right into a docking bay without suspicion, but that could be risky." He weighs the options.

Looking the pistol over closely. "Any thoughts on how we recharge these things?"

Bartja does indeed take the Spider Robot and muses over some of the other gadgetry discovered by the scouts.

"The glijets might prove useful, but if the Sathar can spot an aircar or our scout robots, then they'll also spot the glijets.  I suspect they have a radar system installed, although a glijet isn't metallic and could possibly slip in undetected.  However, we have only two of them so it I would suggest using them only for scouting - and even then, use only sparingly.

I like the idea of taking the Sathar scout ship right in.  It does cause me to wonder why the ship is beneath the river instead of hangared at the Sathar base.  It would take us about three days to retrofit it for all of us and it seems we don't have that much time.  We'll need it to find that Sathar mother ship later, I suspect.

This leaves us with the aircar, glijets, and explorer.  Of those, we have the best chance of getting in with the explorer in my opinion.  If it fails, we'll have to try on foot."

Bartja attaches two EMP grenades to his belt and hands the Spider 3 bot to Shemp (to be carried).

"We should bring the glijets for scouting when we get close.  Chances of reaching the camp without being detected seem slim so I recommend we bring the firepower and explorer to give us the best chance of repelling an attack."

"The ship might give us the best advantage on getting us close once we decide to go in but, I don't think we have three days to wait.

We could use the glijets as scouts and assault with the explorer and or, the air car.  We take all gear necessary for an extraction of ALL of the prisoners this way we don't have to circle back and lose time.

We keep the scout ship as back up, last resort."

Desiraye takes three [3] of the grenades and the other EMP pistol.  "I've got plenty of guns so, if one of you want the pistol or grenades, speak now!"

Vadim nods, "One thing to remember is unless the prisoners are incapacitated they could fight as well so we might want to bring a few spare weapons as well.  Other than that I don't think we should even use the glijets to scout.  The Sathar likely know we're out here somewhere but they don't know when or where we'll attack."  He shrugs, "Start flying glijets over a site and they'll have a pretty good idea that we're coming.  I think we should go for as much stealth as possible using IR goggles and jammers rather than charging right in."

OOC
Vadim takes a laser rifle, IR Goggles and Jammer, 8 more power clips, 3 solvaway, 2 tangler grenades, 2 doze, 4 frags, 2 smoke and magnigoggles.

He also takes 2 automatic pistols and 10 bullet clips and puts them in a military backpack for spare weaponry.

As far as extraction, I don't think the Sathar have a full military complex on planet given their presence so far so I'd go with best practice is to wipe out the Sathar in the area and then bring up the aircar latter after it's clear.

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

Please update your character sheets with what items you are taking with you. Listing items as "carried" is fine. You can also put items in the aircar for storage.

Note that you have 2 aircars available. You can transport up to 8 (including robots like Shemp, but not small ones like the spider robot).

If you want a member of the crew, such as Appleburg to go along and stay with the aircars to assist in running anyone saved back to the Moraes, that is fine. Appleburg is a trained doctor and can administer help from the back position at the aircars.

As you probably assumed, everyone will likely want to join this to participate in the game since it will be the closest thing to a frontal assault on the Sathar you have encountered in awhile (whether by stealth or not).

Your PCs also have put together the following facts:

1) This world was established as a stage for the Qantariate invasion
2) Important research for the invasion (and stopping it) are here, and possibly in the base
3) Some sort of research is being done on prisoners, such as the implant removed from Appleburg
4) The Sathar are cooperating with the invasion sects of the Qantariate, something you discovered in the last adventure.
5) There is some sort of arrangement between the two so the Sathar can exercise control over the known galaxy while the Qantariate does its thing--whatever that is.
6) And don't forget two things: (a) you need the Qantariate sphere, and (b) there is a Qantariate sect trying to stop the invasion from their dimension.

I will start pushing this forward on Monday, so make sure you are all ready. I think I basically understand your plan, but please take into account the travel times over land.

Refer back to here: link to a message in this game

The first post includes travel times per hex and type of terrain.

There is also about a 1 in 10 chance of some sort of random encounter (terrain, delay or creature) per hour of travel.

You could probably get the aircars to the little green inlet about 2 squares southwest of the center in the map. This would result in about a 2 hour hike through the forest to the expected location of the base.

If you leave at dawn (7:00 a.m.), you could probably be at the base by 10:00 a.m. But if you want to take a different approach, let me know.

“I would like to scout the base before daybreak if it’s two hours in and two hours out I want to be on the ground no later than 1am. I recommend we do this very carefully to avid detection. If we have the time what I would like to do is watch their pattern of activity for at least 24 hours. That will give us a chance to understand their security procedures.”

Vadim raises an eyebrow, "I don't think it's a good idea at all.  Maybe if there were some Notui available to scout it out, but I think it just gives the Sathar a chance to detect and pick off Gregor for essentially little gain.  Especially considering we are going there to rescue prisoners and eliminate the base, knowing watch rotations doesn't really add much except increase the risk of detection and telegraphing we're going to attack soon if detected.  Because regardless of what a scouting mission yields whether it is a success or disaster, we are going to attack.  Better to do that en force and adapt to the circumstance so we keep the initiative."

I asked what we know about the base and the answer was basically nothing. We would be going in completely blind. That is exactly the type of attack their security will be ready for. You know nothing about the condition of the prisoners, their location, the timing of guard rotations, lighting, security measures at the perimeter."

The New Pale scout continues, "We know where the base is, that it has our shipmates, and that it is manned by Sathar.  You're adding another full day's delay to tell us what?  Whether they have lighting or maybe if the Sathar have guns and walk around the perimeter of their base?  Another day for our people to suffer but also another day where they have the opportunity to find us.  But we certainly are going to attack given what Desiraye and the others have said about these new aliens...we have no choice regardless of the outcome of your proposal."

"We can certainly time our arrival so it is closer to night (taking advantage of IR Jammers) and even send a scout forward to check things out when we are much closer rather than a two hour hike.  Or not.  But I'm not seeing any great reward considering the risk if you are detected....just mostly risk."

OOC: It seems like the most middle of the road plan was Bartja's. You all go in to the border of the scanners, and Gregor scouts in from there. If you're okay, we can go with that. Could go with Gregor's proposed 1:00 a.m. departure if everyone doesn't mind the darkness and dangers of the forest.

If you all go, you could take Bartja, Desi, Gregor, Rix, Orvo, S'krllk, Vadim and Shemp. Appleburg will go if you want him instead of Shemp. This would fill up two aircars and set you just outside the radar perimeter with about a 2 hour hike in, as mentioned above.

The biggest danger of going alone will be if you encounter a random encounter alone.

I guess Desi decides the final procedure? I'm ready when you are.

Bartja looks back and forth between Appleburg and Shemp as the scouts hash out their final plan.  Shaking his head sadly, he motions for Shemp to move back as he approaches Appleburg.

"Doc.  You've been to this base before and I think we're going to need your expertise in Sathar as well as medicine before this is over.  Will you take the last spot in one of the aircars and help us bring out the other captives?"

He doesn't expect Appleburg will balk at this but is a little disappointed that the repaired Shemp has no place on this mission.  He has loaded the spider-bot, however and takes a closer look at its capabilities.

OOC: I suppose technically you could take Shemp and Appleburg. It's just that the aircars only take up to 4 each. You could shuttle back and forth a group and only take up an extra 2 hours (1 hour each way).

The other issue not discussed is that, assuming you get the prisoners out alive, how are you going to get them back to the ship? You don't know how many there are in total because, like Appleburg, there may be prisoners you are not currently aware of.

Just food for thought.

Bartja gnaws on his thoughts, speaking them aloud for a general group consideration.

"We could shuttle everyone to a landing zone and establish a base camp near the Sathar using the aircars.  We could also send Shemp and Appleburg in with the Explorer and hope they don't get hopelessly lost or attacked.

I'm inclined to think of the base camp as the best option, going in with our assault team first to establish the perimeter and then shuttling in our support ops after we have it secured.  This will give us the doc and Shemp to help collect and support any wounded once we are ready to assault - and might give Gregor time to give us eyes on the perimeter at least."

Like Bartja stated, I think we take both air cars in, unload our ground force and set up a small operating base or a casualty collection point.  Air cars go back and grab any supporting personnel or gear we may need to get out of the area.  If we need to ferry out to an area where we can use the explorer, if it can't get slose enough.  Plus, it's another vehicle since we're unsure of just how many prisoners there may be.  We jump off from there to the Sathar camp.  I don't think we try and have Shemp try to drive in unless they can be guided in until at least after we take the camp unless, Bartja thinks he can handle it or with another body.

Not sure about bringing the Glijets with us due to space on important munitions and support gear we may need for the assault.

Everyone should bring an extra weapon with them in case the prisoners are up to helping us on the way out."

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

You proceed as Desi describes using Bartja's plan with Gregor to do freely as he wishes.

You land the aircars and hike through the woods without encountering any dangers. You approach from the southeast to a clearing where the base has been erected.

In the southeast area is a Sathar vehicle (different from the scout ship) parked on a landing pad.

There are three sets of glass entryways into the building itself on the east side of the building, which you can see leads to a kitchen-like area (south) and a conference room like area (2 north sets of doors).

(Not clear if you brought Appleburg with you. If not, you can show him video remotely, and he confirms this is the place he escaped from. He says that whole eastern area was not really guarded. The area he was held captive was downstairs.)

In the southern rotunda area, you do see video security cameras. Appleburg mentions that he recalls there being a couple of robots patrolling around the building as well.

9:00 a.m.

The security cameras are in the top corner in the northeast and on the wall at the southern rotunda. They sweep back and forth.

Orvo inspects the time to cross over. You could hide behind the ship and then make a break for it, and it would probably only take 3 to 5 seconds to get to the door. This can be timed with the sweep of the security cameras (you can choose to roll against intuition or dexterity with potential added bonuses).

Appleburg says he can see through the video feed. He says he escaped through the door at the southeast entrance closest to the ship. There is a security entrance to the lower level where they keep the prisoners and other secretive projects.

You wait in the shadows and after a few minutes see a patrol consisting of two heavily armed robots pass by. You can't tell exact details about them because they are Sathar construction that you have not seen before.

After a few more minutes, a drone sweeps the perimeter of the building. It is smaller and swiftly goes around the building.

You wait and monitor, finding the following:

The drone circles the facility once every 2 minutes. The two combat robots circle it once every 6 minutes. The security cameras sweep the area in tandem and provide approximately 4 seconds of a hole where the area between the ship and closest door is not monitored.

You watch this pattern for 30 minutes and find that it is consistent and unaltered. You do not see any signs of Sathar life.

OOC: For new players, when you see the ellipsis "..." that usually means I'm rolling in the background.

You begin to sneak in between patrols...

Bartja...sneaks across without being seen.

Desi...sneaks across without being seen.

Gregor...sneaks across without being seen.

M'Kix...seems to get caught in the crossfire of the security camera. He dives for cover. The security camera swivels...but then seems to catch activity in the forest to the east and moves away. Apparently, it is used to some movement and disregards M'Kix.

Orvo...moves as fast as his dralasite body can take him, which is not terribly fast, but then realizes his error because the two patrolling security robots appear to have sped up to get around the building to investigate seeing M'kix. They seem to swivel towards Orvo's movement.

Vadim...behind Orvo but easily makes it across without being seen.

The robots are now actively searching the area as shown on the map.

The drone is nowhere in sight.

Appleburg gets his bearings on where you are at and tells you where to find the trap door going down to the underground complex where the research and prison facilities are located.

Here is a map with locations:
NOTE: You can see two doors to the west of the robots on the map. These are glass doors, completely transparent.

You do not hear any alarms or anything yet. Your assumption is that they are on high alert seeking to investigate what was caught on the security camera and Orvo's movement.

The two robots are not currently moving. They are standing in the area notated and are scanning the area, possibly with heat, motion and regular sensors. They are heavily armed but it is hard to tell with what exactly due to the fact that they are of Sathar make. Their armor is heavy as well, making them likely fairly fearsome opponents.

Orvo successfully unlocks the door to the northern room. You can see the hatch to the underground area in the northwest area. It is a metal hatch that pops up (and will have a ladder leading down.) It appears to be locked with an archaic padlock but you don't have the key.

You can cross behind cover (behind the table and chairs) to try to stay out of sight of the robot outside. The lock could be broken but may result in noise if you don't have bolt cutters or something similar. It could be picked if anyone has such a skill. A key might possibly be somewhere but would take time searching.

The outside robot is standing guard like a sentry by the security camera.

You still do not see the drone anywhere.

The second security robot has moved out of sight going after the spider robot decoy. It is still functional, so Bartja's commands may have worked to preserve it. Its video feedback shows forest.

Shemp begins moving toward Bartja. However, there is a 75% chance he will be spotted if he crosses from the ship to the room where you sit huddling.

Bartja does not detect any additional security systems.

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

Bartja moves back to the doorway that is open behind you, bides his time for a moment, and then tosses the EMP toward the robot...

...the throw appears successful. The lights on the robot go off, and it drops its arms limply. Similarly, the light on the security camera goes out. You are not sure how long it will take for backup power to restore either of them, but you do know this will not be permanent, and loss of contact with the robot and camera may alert someone that there is a problem, although they might assume it is something technical.

After all, other than the primitive bird people and their own prisoners and the Darkness Qantariate, the Sathar aren't away of any intelligent life nearby and are not likely on a high alert. Then again, who knows what they are thinking after they shot down a UPF ship just a couple days earlier.

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

Thanks for your patience, everyone!

Bartja successfully disarms the video link and then moves on to the robot. He successfully reprograms the robot in a defensive mode and uploads your IDs.

There do not appear to be any alarms triggered

Orvo is looking around and finds something that looks like a key in one of the drawers by the table, though made for Sathar hands. You try it, and it fits the lock. The padlock opens and you swing open the door. With no danger appearing to lurk below, you swing down into the first level of the underground compound.

You are able to accomplish all this before the drone makes another loop around the building (which you notice takes 8-10 minutes).

A ladder lets you easily climb down. There is ambient light here but not well lit.

You are in a pentagon-shaped room (pointing down), with two side chambers to the east.

Where you stand below the grate, you see an exit sliding door immediately to the west. To the north above you are various boxes of stored items that seem to be marked for Sathar food. There are also some scattered supplies that appear to be parts for various items, including a huge metal door that they have dropped here on the ground.

To your southwest is a ceiling length pane of glass that is darkened so you can't see through to the other side. There are buttons next to it that seem to control it.

Curving around the wall toward the east, there is another room full of computers. Most are in some sort of sleep mode but turned on.

All the way around to the east side is another room with supplies, including what appears to be some sort of round medical tub filled with a liquid that slightly steams and smells sulfuric (but luckily vents through the ceiling). There is an electronically locked chest at the north end of the room.

There is also a window at the east side of the room. It looks out onto a metal platform for walking that is about 10 feet wide, and then just a steel wall to the east (probably the perimeter of the compound).

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

Vadim goes to the chest and is able to open the security lock without much difficulty. It opens, revealing 4 of the EMP grenades found earlier, a pistol of Sathar design that you have not seen before ("green gun"), and four vials of a brownish liquid. The best translation for the Sathar writing on the vials is "Nano-heal."

The tub appears to be some sort of healing apparatus, given that it has hookups that may fit the anatomy of a Sathar body.

You also take a crack at the computers while Bartja checks out the windows. It is too hard to break through, but when the screen pops up, its "screen saver" is a map of part of the base. You quickly take a snapshot with your watch camera, push a button, and see it as a hologram in front of you. Based on the map, you can easily tell where you are.

Bartja looks out and sees what is reflected in the map: a ship to the southeast is directly under the ship you saw aboveground, indicating that they can change the platform level as a landing pad. There is a bunch of equipment on the landing pad used for vehicles, as well as two Sathar engineers who do not appear to see you.

There are two vehicles in the "garage" area, a yellow one that appear fairly functional, and a dark one that appears more military grade (southwest). And of course there is the walkway  through the east window that you saw before.

The exit remains to the northwest, which would appear to lead out to the large circular area.

While Vadim and Desi strategize, Bartja begins taking and examining the supplies. The others take a crack at the computers.

You are able to unlock the basic security system on the map.

Below is an updated map. I added numbers for the room for easy reference. You don't really know what all the rooms are, but the prison ones are pretty obvious, so you mark those for reference.

Please read the map as follows:
1) The little devices on the walls that have green lines: These are the security camera locations and the sweep turn of each one. For example, there is a security camera right at the exit of the room you are in with a 90 degree swing from west to north. Anything within that swing is caught on camera. If there are not two green lines coming out, then the security camera is currently offline or not working. YOU CAN TRY TO DEACTIVE SECURITY CAMERAS ONE AT A TIME, IF DESIRED. Level 3.

2) The little nodes on the outside wall are laser barriers. Only two of them (blue lights) are currently on. These are bars of lasers going up the wall. If you find a control room, you may be able to deactivate them (Level 2), or you can find another way. ANOTHER THING YOU CAN TRY TO DEACTIVATE/DISARM DIRECTLY AT THE SPOT, BUT LEVEL 4.

3) The square pictures in the south show the two Sathar locations. You don't know where any other Sathar (or robots) are located.

4) The blue "open door" marks a garage like door that goes up and is open currently. There is one in the room you are in next to the green "H," but it is closed.

5) You can reference the corridors as "inside corridor" (inside circle) and "outside corridor" (outside circle) for easy reference. Just post what room you will be next to if you enter those.

6) There is a circular hatch going down in the garage, and there are two rectangular hatches in other parts of the building. These lead down to the tech level below, which is out of sight of the cameras but is a tight squeeze.

7) The "rotating glass doors" are kind of like the ones you see in big buildings where one side opens, you step in, then it closes and the side in front of you opens (used as extra security and privacy for meeting and special rooms). They are not locked.

Security is not as tight as you might think. The only security issues they are probably concerned about would be the prisoners/test subjects.

Did I miss anything? Please make any call outs if so. For some areas and items, you will have to go inspect it personally to figure out how it works.

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

Your best guess is that security is in the area of 11.

You have no idea what is in the tech tunnels. However, you figure if the prisoners are weak, sneaking them through there might be safer than blasting your way out of the facility.

Also, FYI please note that there are other exits leading away from the map. This facility is much larger than this area, so you can expect reinforcements to come through some of those doors if security is overly alerted.

SIDE NOTE OOC: I started thinking of the game Zombicide and those as spawn points.

With S'kllr being possibly AWOL (player, not PC), if you want anything from him such as the needler, I'm sure he will give it to you.

Orvo attempts to deactivate the security camera just outside your door. (rolled 7 using 1d100.) He succeeds! You can feel comfortable leaving your room if you want to go toward the garage or other areas with less surveillance.

SOUNDS:
Let's assume the following sounds:
Laser Pistol/Rifle: 75 dB (about vacuum cleaner)
Needler: 50 dB (about talking volume)
Doze Grenade/Tangler: 70 dB (medium popping sound, less than 1 second) Doze continues with spray (30 dB, about whisper level).
Ballistic/Regular grenades, etc: Loud sounds over 105 dB

Melee: Only whooshing sound until impact, then depends on what surface is hit.

If you have other questions, I can make a judgment call on them whenever. Your characters would know how loud their weapons are.

He preps the tangler grenade as the group heads to area 2, and will get as close as possible in range to the one directly in front of him. If the Sathar notices him, he will immediately throw the tangler. Otherwise, he will get within a range that offers the best bonus.

WIth the security camera disabled, the group starts to sneak its way to where the two technicians are in the garage.

You take them completely by surprise:

ROUND 1

Orvo tosses the tangler...and manages to miss. The stringy sticky strands cover the boxes and crates just to the south of the eastern Sathar.

Desi takes aim at the eastern Sathar when the tangler misses (so as to avoid accidentally hitting Bartja and Vadim)...

Vadim swings his machete...hitting the surprised Sathar.

Bartja is right behind him...making a square blow on the mouth of the Sathar.

The technician staggers backward, looking around for a weapon.

Desi takes her shot. One shot is enough to hit the Sathar in the head and drop it. (NOTE: You did not indicate 1 shot or 2, which is the per round output of laser pistols...1 shot would be with careful aim, 2 with normal aim...but 1 was enough here.)

The other Sathar is about halfway knocked out (28/50 STA remaining). Seeing no weapon behind it, the Sathar tries to back up quickly to a red button on the wall, which can mean only one thing...alarm.

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

Desi takes careful aim and fires. Her laser beam flies between the heads of Orvo and Vadim, hitting the Sathar and knocking it to the ground before it can get to the alarm button. Vadim takes a swing down, expertly hacking the Sathar.

Both Sathar now lay dead on the ground in the bay area. It does not appear that your scuffle was noticed. No alarms are going off...yet.

You get your first clear look at the Sathar up close:

As long, worm-like creatures, their bodies are divided into segments, like an earthworm's. They do not have a skeleton. Instead, they support their bodies hydrostatically, by pumping liquid into the segments so they become hard. This was why Vadim sliced so easily through it.

A shiny, clear slime coats their skin. They appear to be warm blooded.

The head tapers toward the mouth, which is circular and ringed with teeth. Each of their two eyes has two pupils. Four tentacles, two on each side of the body, are arranged about 1 meter below the head. The first pair is slender and weak-looking, and about 1 meter long. These end in four smaller finger-like tentacles. The second pair of tentacles is stronger and about 1.2 meters long. Both of these tentacles end in a paddle-like pad. This second pair is used for heavy lifting, while the smaller tentacles are used for fine work and for holding small weapons.

These two had been carrying small technician tools in their second pair.

They both moved by slithering across the ground with the first meter of the body raised.

Their skin was a yellowish brown. The tentacles are the same as the body, but with a slight greenish tint. The underbelly is pale pink. A pattern of dots, speckles and stripes decorates the back of the head.

As you look down, the glossy slime on their skin begins to fizzle and smoke. You hear a sound like a frying egg, and then the bodies begin disintegrating through some chemical acidic reaction that melts them to nothing but lumps of stain on the ground.

He shrugs and if nothing else he just places a box or whatever else is convenient over or near the remains to obscure the tell-tale signs (kicking aside any remaining materials/equipment if needed) before heading into the underdeck tunnel behind Bartja.

You open the hatch and look down. Underneath, the path goes either clockwise or counterclockwise around the facility and just underneath the metal walkway. The space down there is tight, mostly full of pipes and mechanical things that make crawling through a single file deal. It also blocks vision for more than about 5 meters and creates a lot of mechanical noise.

No one is down there waiting for you.

Gregor can stay at the hatch to keep guard.

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

You move steadily to the (west) around the slightly curving passage.

The machinery is all written in Sathar and would take some time to decipher, but you see as you walk along that the individual ceiling panels (the floor of the passage above) could be unscrewed and removed for access and maintenance--but of course, panels blocked by crates or something on them from above cannot be moved.

You realize this may come in handy as you reach a closed and locked hatch door.

The lock is about a level 4 lock, a bit harder than the others.

The locked door is directly southwest of the area marked "7", underneath the giant crate. The panel between the two crates could be unscrewed if you want to ascend. It is not covered by security cameras (remember the green lines show the arc). It may take about 10 minutes to unscrew with technician's tools, and the tools give off a 20% chance of drawing attention for each failed technician attempt (Level 1).

You can also, of course, go back the other direction.

He is not sure he pulls that off as a Dralasite joke, but he will follow what the others want to do.

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

You follow the narrow and crowded tech tunnel around counterclockwise, ending up at #19. There is another closed and locked door (LVL 4) just ahead of you (about the location of the northern laser barrier).

Here, you see that one of the ceiling panels has been removed already, and you can climb out if you want. There is a laser barrier on each side of the open panel. The laser barriers are about 50 laser beams from one side of the wall to the other and appear fairly deadly.

There are closed doors going into #15 and #16. There are no windows, so outside of your map, you don't know what's inside. Given that they are solid metal, you doubt you could hear through a closed door either. Luckily, the doors do not appear locked.

You move tactically into Room 15.

To your right (west) you see three more of the healing coffins fitted for Sathar (same as you saw on the ship earlier).

To the south is an open exit (no door). There is an automatic door to the east leading to 16. (Note that stepping near it will open it automatically.)

You are not sure what is in the small closet area in the northwest.

To the south, you see a round bathing tub. Inside the tub is a Sathar--naked--who seems surprised to see you but only freezes in place in shock at your sudden entry. What you notice about this Sathar is that it is smaller with slightly different features--perhaps your first glimpse of an adolescent, not an adult.

Thought I'd give you a crude visual.

Moving forward he trusts his poly-vox to convey, "Surrender, don't move..."  If it makes a move to resist or flee he tries to grapple it.

Upon Vadim's movement and command, the adolescent screams--half call for help, half panic--but seems too shocked and scared to actually move.

Bartja doesn't see any other security devices. As this seems more of a private chamber, they might be forbidden.

When Desi steps toward the door to 16, the pressure plate opens the door to the room. She realizes this might have been a mistake, since you could have walked around the open door.

Regardless, when the door opens, you see a sort of lounge room. Four Sathar are sitting on couches. Between the opening sliding door and the wail of the "yute" from the bath within, they are jumping up, grabbing their nearby weapons, and looking at where Desi and Bartja stand, most likely intent on quashing this invasion of aliens into their den.

The four of you open fire at the four Sathar on the couch. Although you stumbled upon the pressure plate automatically opening the door to their lounge area, they are more surprised to see you than you are of them. You get point blank ambush shots, coupled with surprise attacks, while they stumble around for their weapons.

A flash of lasers, gyrojets, and shocked calls of surprise fly through the air. Three of the Sathar are taken down in the first exchange of gunfire. One of them remains untouched as the others begin turning into goo. But before he can turn around and shoot, you fire a second round. Smoke fills the air as he is riddled with laser holes and a gyrojet blast to the chest. He also falls to the ground.

The youth Sathar is stumbling out of the "bath" liquids and runs, slipping and sliding from the gooey bath and his own surprise, to the nearby alarm/intercom buttons.

Here is the map again. You are at 15. The prisoners are at 10. Remember the green are security cameras and the sweep arc.

The young Sathar offers to stand directly in front of a security camera (which is at eye level), while you pass behind him. This would be south of 15. He says you will then need to go to the center (18), southwest (toward 7). Prison cell lock controls are at 8.

He says no one will be in the 7, 8 or 9 area.

The young Sathar leads you around across the northeast platform to the center area. You look down as you cross the bridge and see a huge vat of bluish liquid. At first you thought it was water, but it is too dark, and a bit too viscous.

Then you see creatures floating in the water. Several of them appear to be Sathar, almost as if in suspended animation. In other places, you see black amorphous orb-like areas that seem to expand and retract as if breathing.

The youth does not pause. He continues to lead you around the center control panel, down the southwest platform, and down to the circular doors that lead to #7.

"It's just in here," he says, waiting for everyone to cross the bridge.

So far, you don't see any guards or alarms sounding.

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

The young Sathar is keying in a code and waiting for biometric scanning as you talk.

S'krllk scans the tank. The Sathar are suspended in a viscous liquid that appears to keep them suspended in time as well as seemingly only partially in this dimension. The viscous liquid may be a communication or transportation method, but it is not totally clear.

It seems like it is taking a long time for the young Sathar to open the door, but at last it slides open.

He sprints within, yelling "Enemy!" and pointing back at you. Past the doors, you can see Sathar reaching for their guns.

Vadim, S'krllk and Bartja shake their heads as if coming out of a reverie--or more accurately--hypnosis.

You now have a new entry related to the Sathar:

Hypnotism
A Sathar can hypnotize a character by talking to him in a non-combat situation.

The character must make a Logic check; if he fails, he is hypnotized. A hypnotized character will think the Sathar is his friend, and will want to cooperate with it. He will see things the way the Sathar describes them, if his other senses do not contradict what the Sathar tells him. (For example, a character would not believe that a fire was a pool of water). A Sathar can command a hypnotized person to do something at a specific time, and to forget that he has been hypnotized until that time. For example, a character could be commanded to turn off a security system at midnight.

But you have bigger problems now. You stand in front of the round area into the room leading to #7. Inside, you see that the Sathar there are not only armed but also wear some sort of armor.

There are 8 of them total--3 on the left, 3 on the right, and 2 of them at the far end of the room. (We can label them 1 through 8, respectively.)

The two at the far end (directly in front of you near the chairs 45 feet away (#7 and 8)) turn to their computer screens, possibly to raise an alarm or some other interaction.

Since they are all just as surprised as you, no one gets surprise (normal initiative rules apply). Since this is a combat situation, there is now no chance of hypnotism. They are clearly hostile.

Then there is Sathar #9. This is your friendly naked adolescent Sathar, who is retreating to the southwest. He is still unarmed, but you get a glimpse of this room.

There are weapon storage lockers, computers, and computers. This is a guard station. That's why they are already armed and armored. These must be the Sathar assigned to guard the facility--or at least the prisoners.

Bartja almost lazily swings the gyrojet rifle around to bear on the enemies at the far end of the room.  More distance should equate to more damage, he reasons.

OOC: I'm such a bad GM. Sorry for the delays. I won't even begin to go into the crazy that has been my life recently.

ROUND 1
Orvo pulls a grenade and preps to throw it...

S'krllk emits an EMP toward the alarm area. The computers near the Sathar blink and go out, along with the lights and other electronics. They start a reboot process.

Desi tosses an EMP at the two at the far end 45 feet away. They lob up, and land, exploding with a sonic fizzing sound (near #7 and #8). The EMP grenade pulses, and the computers do not reboot.

Vadim turns on his albedo screen and begins handing out frag grenades.

Bartja fires his gyrojet at #8, hitting twice out of three shots and injuring it badly. It drops to the ground.

The Sathar are turning on their respective screens. Since they are already armed, they fire their Sathar weapons--which are beam weapons similar in appearance to lasers. You have seen them before on the scoutship. (See top weapon here: http://wiki.rpol.net/?edit=668..._nonstandard_weapons )

Sathar 1 fires twice at Bartja. His two hits are direct. (Albedo screen gives protection same as with laser, though these are green plasma beams.)  Bartja takes 51 damage.

Sathar 2 fires at Orvo, hitting once for 28 dmg.

Sathar 3 tries to fire, but the gun locks up and is unusable. (Critical miss.) He throws it down at the ground and starts for the weapons locker.

Sathar 4 fires twice at Vadim, but he misses.

Sathar 5 fires twice at Bartja but misses.

Sathar 6 fires twice at Desi but misses.

Sathar 7 is trying to reboot the computers while taking cover behind the desk.

Sathar 8 is on the ground out of commission.

Sathar 9 (the youth) is ducking down and trying to leave out the door that leads to Room #8.

Orvo's frag grenade is a little off the mark, bouncing and then exploding southeast of the #7. The explosion is deafening, catching Sathar 4, 5, 6, 7 in its radius and 1/2 damage to 1, 2, and 3, as follows:

Sathar 4: 32.

Sathar 5: 54.

Sathar 6: 46.

Sathar 7: 41

Sathar 1: 23
Sathar 2: 26
Sathar 3: 17

The explosion also shatters the glass tables, sends shards into the computers and equipment, and hit and fully kill Sathar 8, who dissolves into goo.

Sathar 5 is also collapsing to the ground, dissolving.

The Sathar all use albedo screens, which did not help against the explosion at all.

The remaining Sathar are diving for cover. Sathar 7, badly injured, is giving up on the computer and pulling his gun to aim at you.

Remaining are:
Sathar 1: 37/60
Sathar 2: 34/60
Sathar 3: 33/50
Sathar 4: 18/50
Sathar 6: 14/60

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

RECAP: You are trying to free the prisoners in this Sathar lab set up secretly on the planet. They are doing some sort of research related to the mind control implants you discovered in the last adventure. They are also related somehow to the Qantariate (or "Blackness Dimension") beings from another dimension. That invasion is scheduled to happen in just a few weeks.

You followed the "youth" Sathar, but now he led you into an ambush with these other Sathar in this large room, which is next to the cells. The youth escaped to the northwest area, and a battle broke out. You have surprise and cover on your side, but a narrow doorway through which to attack.

Also, the noise of this battle will likely raise alarms.

Remaining Sathar are:
Sathar 1: 37/60
Sathar 2: 34/60
Sathar 3: 33/50
Sathar 4: 18/50
Sathar 6: 14/60
Sathar 7: 9/50
Sathar 9 (youth): ? (out of range)

Gregor is in the back hiding and avoiding the combat

ROUND 2:
The Sathar are jumping for cover except #7, who fires his pistol...

(Critical hit!) Orvo is hit...in his right arm tentacle, disabling it and causing massive pain and damage--the pain is so great he collapses on the ground. (51 stamina damage) It must have hit his nervous system. (Orvo is down to 9/60 STA now.)

Vadim is reloading.

Orvo's grenade is dropped when he falls. It begins rolling slowly into the room.

S'krllk fires but just misses with his needler. However, the Vrusk has the presence of mind to kick Orvo's grenade deeper into the room and then step behind the wall for cover.

Desi kicks her gyrojet weapon into burst fire mode and pulls the trigger, but...(critical miss) it jams. She curses and steps back behind cover to fix the jam (no loss of ammo).

Bartja fires three more rockets from his gyrojet, hitting Sathar1 with the last one. The Sathar falls to the ground.

The Sathar jump up to fire back. This is when they notice Orvo's grenade rolling slowly past the center of the room toward them.

For the first time in your life, you hear what a Sathar curse word sounds like, though you would never be able to pronounce is if you wanted to repeat it.

You all jump back behind the wall as the frag grenade explodes...(3 Sathar pass reaction speed rolls and take half damage). The following is their condition after being hit by the grenade:

Sathar 1: dead
Sathar 2: 6/60
Sathar 3: dead
Sathar 4: dead
Sathar 6: dead
Sathar 7: dead

(Oddly, the ones with the lowest STA made the RS checks, so it didn't help them any.)

The dead Sathar dissolve into blobs. The one remaining is severely wounded and chomps down on its suicide pill, falling dead and dissolving to avoid capture.

The alarms go off. It must be that darn youth Sathar pulling the alarms.

The Youth went to the area marked 8 on the map. The cells of your prisoner friends are marked 10.

NOTE: Now that the alarms have gone off, the security cameras will not trigger an alarm but will provide your exact position.

Vadim rushes toward 8. The young Sathar has already fled. He can see the young troublemaker disappear going clockwise on the outer round hallway, waving frantically at the security cameras as he goes.

Room 10 is almost complete destroyed because of the firefight and grenades, but Room 8 is relatively untouched and has two computer centers. Next to one of the computers is the equivalent of a Sathar "post it" note with some writing on it.

Vadim can also see across the way to the cells. In the center aisle is a large "picnic table" where the Sathar may have gathered, played card games or snacked while keeping watch. On it lays two boxes: one with grenades and one with pistols. Next to that is a board game which appears to translate as "Settlers of Volturnus."

The cells in 10 are energy blocked (not bars), so they will need to be deactivated. A slight glowing sheen shows they are on. Through the transparent energy wall, you see several prisoners peeking out curiously. The battle has brought them to full attention.

Vadim cannot make out who they all are, but immediately in front of him is a cell with your long lost captain and engineer. The engineer sits on the bench and the captain stands at the energy field.

ALARM NOTE: There will be a 10% + cumulative 5% each round that 2-7 Sathar will show up in response to the alarm. Starting...now!

There are two potential methods to free the prisoners:

1) Free them collectively using the computers in room 8 or
2) Punch in the proper code on the number pad next to each individual cell. (Remember, the Sathar use hexidecimal.)

Or maybe blow a hole in the wall or something I haven't considered?

Sound can go through the cell energy fields, so you can also talk freely to the prisoners.

The screens of the two computers in room 8 are on some sort of erotic Sathar screen saver which you feel the urgent needs to turn off or avert your eyes. The Sathar computer has a mouse both on the left and right, and a Sathar-language keyboard in the center.

The sticky note is written in the Sathar language.

Orvo is quaking from the damage to his limb. The dralasite feels near death. "I think I just broke my hippocratic oath," the medic laughs at seeing the destruction from his grenade. "Physician, heal thyself, as they say on your planet." Then he injects himself with the drugs available to get back in action.

"We need a computer guy or technician on those computers," he says. "Unfortunately, that's not me."

Desi and Orvo guard the automatic doors in the center to watch the incoming hallways for "guests." ... So far, no one has come.

Orvo administers 1 dose of biocort to himself. (+10 STA)

The sticky note has six Sathar characters on it. Those characters can be found on the keyboard.

Touching the mouse stops the perverted Sathar screensaver but prompts a six character password.

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

Sorry, but I feel like we left on a cliffhanger, so I want to wrap this up a little bit.

S'krllk enters the password into the Sathar system using his bodycomp, successfully matching the subroutines. The cell doors "ding" with a beep and then open, freeing the prisoners.

By now, the alarms are going off and you know the Sathar will be coming soon en masse. Luckily, you have figured out the underground tunnel beneath the main floor. Taking the prisoners, you get them down into the tunnel. and move back to the area with the ship in the southeast area (in the place marked "Sathar" on the map).

You help everyone into the ship. The doors to the hangar are opening and several large combat robots and Sathar enter with guns raised. Suprisingly, they do not shoot. Your piloting skills allow a quick exit with the vehicle. The vehicle starts heading outside the shielded area and you pic up comms with your Eleanor Moraes.

You hear voices yelling back to you, "They found us! There must have been some tracking on the items found in that sunken ship. We are evacuating! They are firing missiles. You need to--"

The voice is suddenly cut off by a loud explosion. Even from where you fly tens of miles away, you see the explosion. The Eleanor Moraes is no more. Anything, and anyone, on board must now be dead. The blast radius leaves no doubt of that.

But before you can wrap your head around that, the controls on your stolen ship begin blinking. The ship begins to turn up. You strap in.

Checking the consoles, you see that the ship has been set to autopilot to return to the mother ship. This is the same ship that shot down the UPF Wyland.

Quick reminder of what happened before:

"Crew of the Moraes. We were sent as a rescue operation, to recover LeGrange, and to deal with the local threat. We are the UPF Cruiser Ridley Weyland. We have been--"

His voice suddenly cuts off with a loud explosive sound behind him. He picks up again:

"We have been ambushed by a Sathar Destroyer of unknown origin that seems to be guarding this territory. Our engines are out. The Captain has ordered everyone to abandon ship. The smaller ships and escape pods are loading for escape. We have called in for a rescue team but the nearest ships are three weeks out. I need to get to my escape--" He pauses, gasps, and when he speaks, he may have forgotten his comm unit is still on. "Dear God, what is that? Another one?"

You hear another person in the distance respond to the question. "That's a Sathar mothership. Obsolete. Small but highly weaponized Class D destroyer."

Another voice, presumably the captain: "Abandon ship. Get to your escape pods. Their cannons are trained on--"

You are now on a small Sathar scout ship leaving the atmosphere of the planet and headed on autopilot to a Sathar cruiser in orbit. Given that the robots and Sathar did not shoot, they may have not realized that you were on board and think you are Sathar returning to the ship. They are probably too egotistical to think non-Sathar can pilot one of their ships.

But then again, maybe they know exactly what they are doing.

So glad you all are still here. I'm surprised...and flattered.

Please add 5 XP to your characters for updating them. For those who may not remember exactly, you can update your primary stats, such as stamina or dexterity, or you can update your skills. If your skill is one of your core skills, then it is half the cost compared to something you are not trained in. You can get more details in the "Improving Characters" section of the game wiki. The general rules on PSAs and skills can be found here: https://starfrontiers.fandom.c...Category:Skill_Areas

Don't forget that there is a general game wiki online too: https://starfrontiers.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page

Currently on the ship, we have Desi, Vadim, Orvo, and S'krllk, along with Winston Marlboro (human Moraes captain), Pradi Innesti (Moraes engineer), Captain and Dentin (human Osprey Captain).

Per the Mutiny on Eleanor Moraes book: "Captain Marlboro is seriously injured (-35 stamina points), but not beyond treatment. A successfully applied freeze field will preserve him until he can receive major surgery in the proper facilities on the ship. The characters can also use a freeze field on lnnesti (-15 stamina points). A shot of staydose followed by two shots of biocort in the next 24 hours will also preserve him."

There is one freeze field in the ship that can be altered to use on Captain Marlboro, who is too injured to think rationally until he is properly healed. Engineer Innesti has a serious broken leg and had to hop to the ship after rescuing, but he is fully alert. You put Marlboro in the freeze field, and Innesti says he will stay to watch the ship and the captain when all this plays out until you can get out of there. As an engineer, he will also try to learn the controls of the ship while you do whatever it is you do.

Then there is Captain Dentin. Innesti says the Sathar performed some sort of procedure on his head. You look and see that he has a scar on his head indicating the same sort of implant that you saw previously (on Dark Side of the Moon module). It allowed the Sathar to take control of individuals like slaves. Something seems wrong with Dentin's thinking process. He seems to have lost much of his ability to think--like an automaton. He will need the implant surgically removed, and hopefully then, there won't be long term brain damage.

The ship you are on is identical to the scout ship you discovered buried in the river back on the planet.

The computers indicate 50 minutes until you dock with the mothership.

12:00 p.m.

19 DAYS UNTIL QANTARIATE INVASION

DAY 7 ON MAHG MAR (now leaving Mahg Mar atmosphere).

If we have any other players who want to rejoin (or new players who want to join), now is probably a good time. If new, we can have them be additional rescued prisoners from Dentin's crew. (Remember that Dentin's ship was supposed to be your rescue team, but they were shot down by the Sathar mothership, and he and some of his crew were captured or killed.)

An undistinguished but reliable ship's engineer, lnnesti is a seasoned veteran. He knows everything about the Eleanor Moraes that is worth knowing. He has memorized every detail of her blueprints and specifications, and can quote from them as though they were sitting in front of him. He is shy and quiet, and seldom speaks unless spoken to. He can be relied upon to improvise repairs or jury rig equipment in emergencies.

Always addressed as "Captain Marlboro;' the Captain is a rather distant and formal character. He is experienced and well trained, though unimaginative and conventional. He was selected for this expedition on the basis of his unblemished record of successfully completed missions. However, he reached the peak of his capacity and is now coasting downhill.

Desiraye slings the gauss-rifle over her shoulder and takes a minute to think about options.  "I'm just going to throw this out there.  We have only one freeze filed to use.  Captain Marlboro is the most seriously injured, I say he gets put in it.  Unless we can find another one in this ship's stores, I would like to see the captain placed in it.

Innesti has volunteered to stay behind and monitor the ship with a broken leg and look after Marlboro.  We need to decide what to do with Dentin.  He may be a liability if we take him with us to do anything on the mothership once we connect with it in less than an hour.

Since this looks like the same ship we got from the lake, everything should be in the same place.  Let's see what kind of gear we got, if any.  No telling if they got those little bots on board either.

Thoughts?"

Re: Face of a New Enemy Part 2

Hopefully, we will have everyone with us, and maybe I should add one or two more.

You get settled, do some healing, and so forth, but have very little time. The ship is leaving atmosphere at up to 5 Gs, so you get strapped in and let it take you outside the atmosphere. Once you have broken free of the planet's gravity, the thrusters go off, and you find yourself in zero gee.

Innesti is going over the computers and ship when a message suddenly comes through.

To those manning the Sathar Scout ship. This is Commodore Karl Raider from Clarion Base, White Light. The Moraes sent us messages and codes just a couple hours ago. We monitored what happened and the dispatch of your ship. We have been able to use recovered codes to make it appear that you are a routine scout ship returning to the mothership. The mothership has non-Sathar who have slave implants, and if you act accordingly, they should think you are just part of their automaton slaves. This information should keep you alive, but we do anticipate at some point that our interference and use of old codes will be discovered. We don't know how long you have.

You have approximately 30 minutes until you dock with the mothership. Clarion base is sending back up to take down the mothership's defense ships and rescue you, but it will not be there for several hours. I am sending a file of missions we would like you to accomplish if you can.

We have to act now while we can surprise them, and that means boarding the Sathar installation mothership, codenamed Base Alpha. The boarders must neutralize the garrison and any self-destruct device. We will deal with any armed ships in the system. We don't have enough men and robots to pull the mission off unless you help from the inside. If we capture Base Alpha, it will be the first major capture of a Sathar installation. We'll learn vital information that could save countless Federation lives. It's that important. If you do this, you'll earn the thanks of the Frontier Worlds.

Transmitting files now. Thank you. And good luck.

After the transmission ends, a file is downloaded for their desired outcome.

OPERATION BACKDOOR
Mission Objectives:
1. Capture a live Sather prisoner.
2. Capture Sather technology and artifacts.
3. Capture Sathar mothership intact (no self destruct).
4. Make notes and video records of all information gathered. Ensure that this information is immediately relayed via this secure channel to headquarters in case mission unit (i.e., all of you and the mothership) is lost.
5. If the capture attempt fails, destroy the mothership.
S. Arrange for any information, artifacts, or prisoners to be recovered by later units if assault personnel are captured or killed.
6. Determine and investigate any connections with the Qantariate and the planned extradimensional invasion.

The file has additional information they were able to gather regarding the mothership:

Self-destruction is usually achieved by engine overload; either the bridge or the engineering section might control the self-destruction program. You must get past the docking area as quickly as possible, or be prepared for the Sathar to explosively decompress it if your cover is blown.

We estimate 32 crew members of Clan Y Sathar. There may be any number of non-Sathar race slaves. Try to preserve them, as they are innocents, but they may be directed to attack, so use discretion.

MOTHERSHIP KNOWN STATS:
All compartments and passageways are covered by cameras, audio sensors, and sensitive atmosphere testers. These sensor systems may be monitored at any computer terminal throughout the ship or through the personal robots in link with the main com¬puter, but access to this information is rou¬tinely controlled by officers. In an emergency, access is not limited.

SECURITY ALERT
There are three stages of security alert. Banks of lights surround each hatchway in all compartments and passageways of the ship. These flash the appropriate colors to indicate the alert status.

Code Blue: Combat Alert. All shifts to battle stations in space suits (scout crew in armor) with personal weapons. Airtight hatches are sealed and code-locked (no access without password). Computer lockout.

Code Amber: Attack. All compartments are depressurized except the bridge and scout headquarters. The self-destruct sequence is started. Computers destroy sensitive data; the most crucial data is sent to hidden storage.

Code Green: Self-Destruct. Atomic drives are overloaded. All computer files are destroyed.

SELF-DESTRUCT PROCEDURE (If activated)
Previously, Sathar vessels have self-destructed before they could be boarded and captured. You do not know how much time you have to capture the ship before it is destroyed. If engaged, a Technician can successfully bypass computer security to ask how long ago engine overload began.
Once the self-destruct order is given, the ship's atomic drives will explode in 55 minutes. This means that the player characters must jettison the engines within 45 minutes of the time the self-destruct program is activated. Remember that it takes 10 min¬utes for the engines to drift to a safe distance before detonation.

MOVEMENT IN ZERO-GRAVITY
The mothership is designed for operation in both zero-gravity and acceleration environ¬ments. All compartments, elevators, and passageways are equipped with travel rails and grips for Sathar tentacles. Movement is at walk rate, half this if magnetic shoes are worn.

Further information will be provided as we continue to search the mothership records through our backdoor channels.

You search the scout ship and find following:

Tornadium D-19 (3 charges)

Subspace radio (able to relay information in #4 above)

1 "Spider II" Personal Robot (Level 2; MV 60m; IM/RS 5/50; STA 50; ATT 50; DM 4d10 arms or Special; electrostunner with 20 SEU, sonic stunner with 20 SEU)

Space suits
Space armor
Research and test gear that can be used to gather information.

The scout ship suddenly accelerates up to 1 G. The mothership has taken over remote control of the scout ship's approach.

20 minutes until renezvous with mothership
