Re: Bugs in the System 1-1

The captain says, "I'm glad you could all make it.  Some of you have been here awhile, and some of you are the ones we rescued from Volturnus."

OOC:  For the purposes of getting everyone together, those from Volturnus (Desiraye, Kri'lik, S'Krllk and Sergi) are just meeting those who were previously stationed (temporarily or otherwise) on this ship (Kuurn, Ospra, Parson and Yagrith).

The captain continues, "I asked for you here because you are currently the only ones who don't have urgent work on the ship for the repairs and smooth running of the ship.  We have been given permission to dock at Snobol.  Snobol's captain, Captain Akizk, was at first reluctant to let us board because this ship is typically used as a freighter for a company that rivals his company and he apparently has some sort of Venturi Project or what-not that he wants kept secret from rivals.  He works for the ByChem Corporation.  You probably heard of them.  I convinced him we were returning from Volturnus, where we were in battle with Sathar, and he agreed to let us land but he wouldn't let anyone deboard."

The Captain punches some buttons and a hologram appears.  "Here's a map of the system."  [OOC: I'm having a problem with my image program interface.  It's a diagram of the Venturi system that I'll try to upload from a different computer.]

"So here's a system briefing from our intel:"  He pulls up the following stats:
quote:
Belnafaer has only three planets orbiting it. Two of
these (Gog and Magog) are in close orbit around the
star and are small, hot, rocky and barren. The third
planet, Venturi, is a cloud gas giant that
orbits Belnafaer at a much greater distance and has
an extensive system of moons and rings.

PLANET NAME: Venturi
Planet Type: Gas Giant
Moons: 20+
Diameter: 129,000 km
Temperature: -180ºC (at top of atmosphere) to -
50ºC (at top of liquid layer).
Rotational Period: 10 hours

Venturi is a gas giant planet. This means that it is a
massive, spherical cloud of gas that becomes
denser and denser towards the center until it
gradually becomes liquid and finally solid.
Because of this, Venturi does not have a surface in
the way that other "rocky" planets do.
The outer part of the gas giant (its "atmosphere") is
composed mostly of hydrogen with some helium,
methane, ammonia and traces of other compounds.
These trace compounds include a number of very
complex, unstable bio-chemicals which are highly
valued as catalysts for industrial processes. The
atmosphere is cloudy, very cold, swept by winds of
up to 2000 km/hr and frequently blasted by violent
magnetic storms.

MOON NAME: Snobol
Diameter: Average 6 km (irregular)
Atmosphere: None
Temperature: -140ºC
Snobol is one of the many moons of Venturi, and
very small by comparison with the rest. It is a large,
lumpy, cold block of frozen water and carbon
dioxide ("dry ice"). Snobol was only
recently "captured" by Venturi, and is unusual
in that it has a very elongated orbit which takes it
as close to Venturi as 197,000 km and as far away
as 950,000 km. Its orbit takes 38 standard days.
Snobol still has the spin which it had before it
was "captured", and rotates about its axis once
every 4 minutes 45 seconds.

"So we're docking at the moon Snobol at Captain Akizk's starship "Moneyspider."  The Moneyspider is a fully operational starship, but currently serves as the base for the Venturi Project. It whirls around Snobol at the end of a long cable,
providing artificial, centrifugal gravity throughout the ship. An elevator runs along the outside of the cable between Snobol and Moneyspider.  Inside Snobol itself are docking facilities for starships, and the automated shuttlecraft that ferry personnel, supplies and unrefined chemicals to and from Jetsom.

"Jetsom is an extraction platform that floats like a hot-air balloon in the atmosphere of Venturi, supported by bags of gas heated by atomic reactors. It does not have a fixed position but is blown around by the planet's winds. It does, however, maintain a constant altitude.  Jetsom has a distillation tower that extracts crude forms of Cys-DE and Meta-TI from the atmosphere."

He finishes, "That's about all I know.  Now, I called you here because Captain Akizk has just lifted his ban on allowing our crew to leave the ship to have dinner with him tonight at 1700 hours, but he wants it to be a small number.  You fit the bill, and I'm needed here, so you get the job to go have a nice dinner with him.  Remember, don't take any weapons or specialized suits.  That'd just be plain rude.  Any questions?"

"Oh how delightful, a dinner party. I shall be ready to depart at the appropriate time."

In case you need to know this is what I will be bringing with me to dinner:

Medic-CAS, Duo-Atmospheric/Geological-CAS, Duo-Fauna/Flora-CAS, Chronocom
Toxyrad Gauge, Poly-vox, Albedo Screen w/20SEU clip.

Desiraye read the printout of the system brief and keeps the copy of it for herself.  She half rolls her eyes when the Captain mentions not bringing any weapons or specialized kits with them to the ship and just smiles slyly while he finishes his briefing.  Upon hearing the other human male, Parson Chance, make his comment, she rolls her eyes all of the way around this time and says, "Men.  Another smooth talker."

S'Krllk tilts his head the other way, rubs his mandibles together making a raspy noise that in some Vrusk circles is considered rude and in others complimentary, and states simply "This may be more difficult than that Sathar fence."
Then he approaches Kri'lik, "Excuse me, but I've no experience in human dining rituals. Could you help me not to look too much like a lower life form at this event?
It is obvious from his stance and tone of voice that he would rather go to the dentist than to a dinner party, which is odd considering the state of Vrusk teeth.

"Dinner party," mumbles Yagrith. "Lots of people, too much talk. Nothing logical, no computers, no robots. Bah!" When he shuffles off to his quarters to get ready for dinner, he'll grab his robcomkit and backpack. "Bet they have a robot or two over there that could use some attention" he grumbles as he gets ready.

"I'll do what I can S'Krllk. Though my knowledge in table etiquette may be near as short as yours. Mostly when I arrange knives and forks it is upon an operation table." The last part is said in such a manner that the professor's mandibles click together excessively.

Your captain says, "I think it will be an intimate affair.  Probably just the captain and a few from his ship.  As for the open bar, I couldn't say.  The captain sounds hesitant to tell me much at all, to be honest."

Rising, Parson nods to the others before turning to leave, "I love an intimate affair, I guess we had better go make ourselves beautiful."  He pauses and then looking to the others, he adds wryly, "Some of you are going to need all the time you can get."

The captain laughs, but apparently not at the jokes circulating.  "All of you have assumed Captain Akizk is human.  He is actually a Vrusk, and his crew is composed of various races.  I don't know the details. I know there is at least one Yazirian and one dralasite, and robots too.  That's another reason I thought you would make a great group to accept his invitation."

He says, looking at Desiraye, "And a human female too.  I think he is working on pretty much a skeleton crew.  Make sure you get those types of details too."

S'Krllk casually asks the captain, "Did Akizk mention which trade house had enjoined him?"
Although not an unusual question, the manner in which S'Krllk asks suggests his interest is more than casual.

Desiraye turns her attention past the comments of Chance to the Captain, "Umm, are we supposed to be looking for something more than just dinner and seeing what's up with this ship Captain?  Something setting off red flags for you or something?"

Desiwill return to her cabin and get ready to meet for the dinner on the other ship.
