Bugs In The System 1-12

Ellen is clearly shaken by what just happened. She leads you back to the bridge so you can avoid the radioactive robot.  "The robot itself will remain dangerously radioactive for some time," she says, anxious to leave the engine area.

She checks back at the bridge and says, "We need to protect the product we've brought in.  By-Chem relief ship arrives in..."  She checks the Computer, and says, "...12 days."

DAY 114

BY-CHEM RELIEF SHIP ARRIVES:  DAY 126

She is tired, and it has been a long day. She suggests everyone rest for the night.  "Baralou is gone.  The danger is over."  She is haggard and clearly unnerved to be the last surviving crew member, other than the infected robot that just left in the workpod.

Then Ellen's eyes open wide.  "Oh, no," she says.  "The computer shows that there has been a breach in the hull on deck 8.  The workpod has attached itself there and broken through the hull."

You can see the red buttons flashing on a map of the ship.

She continues, "The elevator was just used to go to Deck 7.  Someone -- it's gotta be Baralou -- is on the computer there, and -- "

The computer screen in front of Ellen goes blank.

"We've lost access," she says.  "Baralou's on the ship somewhere, and she's got full access of the computers, but...but..."  Ellen takes a deep breath.  "But Deck 7 also contains the master controls for the life support system in the ship and has the only lifeboat."  Her voice falls to a contemplative whisper, "And Barlou is the only one of us who doesn't need life support."

Re: Bugs In The System 1-12

Just after Ellen finishes speaking, you see a blinking light near the elevator.  It is being used.  Baralou is on the move, but you don't know what she's done on or to Deck 7.  Because of the hull breach, there is no air or air pressure on Deck 7 and appropriate precautions will be necessary.

Re: Bugs In The System 1-12

Those going to life support find that they've got a big problem.  Baralou has locked you out of the computer system.  At the computers and life support, you realize that Baralou must be able to access these remotely, wirelessly.  In other words, she can access the ships computers and control electronic functions just by being in the vicinity of what she wants to control, or close to a ship computer.

You can only guess that she, as a robot with an artificial intelligence, has been infected by the Matrix too.

However, to release the computers and fix life support, you need to take down Baralou first.

Life support indicates you have 2 hours left until things get critical aboard Moneyspider.  The areas will be affected as follows:

Deck 8: currently no oxygen or life support.
Deck 7: 30 min. remaining
Deck 6: 1 hour remaining
Deck 5: 1 hour remaining
Deck 4: 1 hour, 15 min.
Deck 3: 1 hour, 30 min.
Deck 2: 2 hours
Deck 1: 2 hours

Snobol: unaffected

Those going to the stronghold area have perhaps an even greater problem.  The security robot stands there (in M14), calls out, "Security Breach!" and starts to advance toward you.

The security robot has an upright cylindrical body. As you recall from the encounter on Flotsom, its metallic "skin" is electrified like a stunstick. (Anyone touched must make a Stamina check or be stunned (unless protected by a gauss screen or A/S implant). The skin is powered by the same battery as the screen.

The doors to M15 are closed.  M15 holds key chemicals in tanks, and also has the main computer server for the ship and the main life support server.

Re: Bugs In The System 1-12

I'll try to clear it up:

There is the main life support system (machinery, etc.) down where Baralou caused a problem, which is now creating zero oxygen and life support issues gradually up through Money Spider.

Where the security robot is there is a security door.  It is currently closed and secured.  Through that door are the main computer systems controlling life support, as well as other critical systems.

My understanding is S'Krllk, Yag, and Kri'lik were looking at the lower level life support system, and found out they couldn't do anything until Baralou's power over it is gone.  Meanwhile, the others went searching for Baralou and found the security robot.  So S'Krllk and the others are welcome to come up to help fight the robot (and unlock the security door), but they'll just have to wait a round or so.

Remember that Ellen has the passwords for the security doors.

ROUND 1
The robot strikes out, hitting Sergi (5 dmg).  Sergi is shocked by the security robot's touch and is stunned (unable to attack until further notice).  The robot strikes again but misses.  Then it reaches one arm around to pull out a grenade.

Desiraye strikes, making an incredible shot against the security robot.  (Critical hit, 82 damage.)

Kuurn also hits. (23 dmg)

No one else needs to attack because this takes out the robot completely.

Ellen and those from the decks below enter the room.  Ellen runs to the door to punch in her security code.  However, she finds that it does not work.  "Baralou must have changed the security code!" she stammers, in a panic.  (An attempt to bypass it can be made -- Level 3 lock.)

You are all currently at M14:

This takes a few minutes.  In the meantime, Sergi is not stunned anymore.

Re: Bugs In The System 1-12

Everyone is together at M14.  M15 is beyond the locked door that was just successfully bypassed.

A Level 3 lock is on each of the airlock doors, so a similar check would be necessary to bypass those locks.

Checking through the door to M11, you see five robots have just gotten off the elevator:  another security robot like the one you just defeated (DB-0), the engine maintenance robot from downstairs (AUD-Ia)(still holding onto an active radiation rod), a general maintenance bot (CLR-E1), an ice cutting robot they use to keep ice from forming on the interior of Snobol (HKK-R2), and the "Gorilla" exercise robot that previously had a malfunction (GLLR-5).

S'Krllk opens the door to M15.  It is an automatic door that opens all the way or closes all the way.

What you see in the doorway almost shocks you, like suddenly seeing a ghost where you don't expect it.  Baralou is standing right in the doorway, waiting and ready.  She -- it -- is holding a primed grenade in each hand, which she throws to the northwest and northeast corners of the room (M14 where you are) before nodding her head slightly.

You realize that her nod of the head is a wireless communication to the computer system to shut the door again because the door immediately begins to shut just as you see her stepping back into the explosive tanks in M15 to prep her next weapon and attack.  This happens so fast and unexpectedly that you hardly have time to respond.  The two grenades flying over your heads have instead caught your immediate attention.

There is the broken security bot in the room that someone can hide behind. (RS roll required.)

Going out the door with Sergi.  (RS roll -10.)

Jumping at the security door like S'Krllk did.  (RS roll -25.)

Other actions will be decided as needed.

ROUND 1
Kri'lik and Kuurn dive behind the security bot.  Kuurn makes it there first, leaving Kri'lik exposed.

Sergi is in the far room.  (M11.)  The robots there are turning toward him.

Desiraye dives past the door into the room with Sergi.

Yag doesn't quite make in time at the security door.

S'Krllk goes to open the security door.  It has been locked again, so it will take him some time.

The first grenade explodes.  It is a smoke grenade, filling the room with smoke and making it almost impossible to see.

The other is a frag grenade.  Kri'lik, Yag, and S'krllk are hit.  Luckily, the damage is minimized some due to the distance, but it still hurts immensely as the shrapnel slams into their bodies.  (Kri'lik: 25 dmg; Yag: 21 dmg; S'Krllk: 28 dmg.)

The robots in the far room will attack Sergi and Desiraye next round.

Re: Bugs In The System 1-12

OOC:
For those new to my game, here's how I like to do battle:

1- Make sure you post not just any reactions to the previous round, but also what your character will be doing the following round.  That makes it faster.  Example:  Ben reels from the explosion but jumps right back up, dives for cover of the rock, and fires at the robot with his laser pistol.

2- You can post multiple actions if you want, such as "...will fire his laser pistol at setting 3 until it runs out or he is injured."

3- In a private line or main text (your preference), please put any relevant:  stats you need (such as to hit or to perform an action), and any modifiers you think might apply (such as cover, a skeinsuit with whatever's remaining, etc.).

So it might look like this:

Ben fires his laser pistol at the robot from behind the rock.

LP to hit: 60%
Cover of rock.
50 points in skeinsuit.
35 STA remaining.

Also remember that each "round" is 6 seconds.

I also like to move the battle scenes quickly to keep the action rolling.  Given that this is the end of the adventure soon, we can hopefully get through it quickly.

OOC:

Referring to the map above, your characters started at M14, where the original security robot is.

S'Krllk opened the door to M15, which is where Baralou immediately threw a grenade into M14 where you are at.

At about that same time, the elevator at M11 (which looks like an 8 or an infinity symbol) opened, and the robots got off.

Sergi jumped into M11 and is currently running across that room firing at the robots until he gets to sickbay (M13).  Desiraye also jumped into that room to avoid the grenades and is currently at M11 with the robots.

Baralou security locked the door to M15 again, which S'Krllk is trying to open once more.  Baralou is (apparently) alone in M15, you are all at M14 (except Sergi and possibly Des), and the robots are in M11 approaching M14.

Any questions?

ROUND 2
S'Krllk is still trying to open the security door.  Yag waits for it.  Clouds of smoke cover the room, blanketing everyone.

Kri'lik moves to the door near where Desiraye is so he can see his targets through the doorway.  Kuurn is in the smoke, still behind the downed security robot, but safe for now.

Kri'lik misses the security robot but Desiraye and Sergi both hit it once.  (122 dmg)  The robot is stopped just as it is about to toss a grenade their way.

The Gorilla robot rushes after Sergi as he runs toward sickbay.  The ice cutter robot also follows after Sergi.

The engine maintenance robot approaches closer.

The maintenance robot moves and attacks Desi, striking her with its powerful metallic arm for 11 STA damage.

Sergi and Desi suffer 1 permanent point of radiation damage from the engine maintenance robot's proximity.

OOC: Unfortunately for Sergi, two great rolls were just made by the robots going after him.

The Gorilla robot tackles and pummels him with its arms.  (8 dmg)

The ice cutter robot gets Sergi with its ice cutting arms.  (36 dmg.)  Then it steps back, and its laser powertorch swings into its hand.  It is ready to use it on Sergi, which will cause massive damage if it hits.  (20d10 dmg.)

Back at the security door, S'Krllk successfully opens the security door into the strongroom (M15).

M15 STRONGROOM DESCRIPTION:
This room houses the M/MN (Main), M/GL (General)
and M/LS (Life-support) computers. There are 10
chemical storage tanks (identical to those on
Jetsom) in a rack against the west wall. Five
are labeled "PURE Cys-DE" and the other five "PURE
Meta-TI". Two of each type are full of their
respective chemicals. The others are empty.
Releasing the gas has the same cooling effects as
the crude gas (as in Jetsom) but pure Cys-
DE is an S6/T15 toxin. Meta-TI is non-toxic.

You recall that the Cys-DE was what was released earlier into the ship and killed the dralasite and would have killed everyone else except for the gas masks.  Also the main computers (including for life support) are here.

Yag is ready with a frag grenade and can throw it in, but he is aware the explosion could release the toxic gas and could destroy part or all of the main computers and life support computers -- so there's a risk there.

Does he throw the grenade?

Baralou is not in sight.  She must be hiding around the corner or somewhere in the room.

Re: Bugs In The System 1-12

ROUND 4
Desi hits the maintenance robot once.  (46 dmg. 64/100 remaining)

Sergi and Kri'lik both hit the ice cutter robot once.  (70 total dmg.  430/500 remaining.)  The ice cutter robot is much larger and more heavy duty than the other robots, due to its need to work in the void.  Its laser torch makes it extremely dangerous.  Without its laser torch, it it does much less damage.

Sergi tries getting up to escape into the sickbay.  However, the gorilla robot makes a grapple and trips Sergi onto the ground.

The ice cutter robot attacks...and hits Sergi.  (OOC:  This was a very, very close call, landing exactly on the the "to hit" number, but I had to give it to the robot to be fair.)  The laser cutter cuts through Sergi's body like a knife through butter, severing him in half.  (136 dmg.)  Sergi is dead.

The maintenance robot attacks Desi, hitting her square in the face with its metal fist.  (12 dmg.)

The engine robot approaches to attack Desi.  It swings its radioactive tank at Desi but misses by a long shot.  (But Desi is still -1 due to radiation damage.  Kri'lik is also now close enough to take -1 damage due to radiation.)

Kuurn steps up next to Kri'lik and fires at the maintenance robot.  Unfortunately, both shots go wide.

Yag rushes into the room with Baralou, and S'Krllk flops through the door, aiming his needler at the tanks.

The lights have all been turned off, and Baralou is no longer by the door.  This should have been a clue, but Yag immediately realizes his mistake.

At ground level, there is a quick beeping sound.  Yag looks down in time to see a trip mine, its invisible laser sight having just been crossed by Yag's foot.

It explodes from several feet away.  Luckily, Yag is on edge and alert, and he dodges, minimizing its damage.  (Yag made his reaction check.  He takes half damage:  27 dmg same type dmg as frag grenade.)  S'Krllk is also within the blast radius.  He too is able to roll and make the wall take most of the impact.  (Reaction check made. Damage: 12 STA.)

NOTE: Yag is down to just 8 STA left!

S'Krllk fires, but the blast has thrown off his aim, and his needler harmlessly hits the ceiling.

The tanks seem damaged by the triplaser explosion, but luckily it was toward the southeast, and they do not seem damaged.  However, the main computers took a beating from the explosion and may require work.

Yag and S'Krllk are now in the room with Baralou.  Yag sees a figure in the eastern corner crouching.  It has a deceptively Yazirian shape, but he knows it is a robot under there.  In the darkness, he sees a slight glint of light off of what must be a gun.

OOC: Since Yag did not post what he will do if he finds Baralou, there will be a standoff at the next round.  Baralou is in the far eastern corner, about 15 feet away from Yag.

The laser blast that hit the Doc is fully absorbed by his Albedo screen. Luckily for him he also had the screen powered by a power backpack, but not so with his laser pistol which now indicated Zero SEUs on the power clip. Looking around the DOc takes a few steps back into the room to give him some more distance from the approaching robots. While moving he ejects the empty SEU clip and pulls one of the spare power cords from his powerpack and attaches it to the pistol.

Desi realizes that the situation is critical and the she is outnumbered by the robots that just took out Sergi.  She begins to back out of the room and reaches to one of her attachment points and grabs a Tangler grenade and drops it on the floor behind her as she tries to close the door between her and the bots.

Re: Bugs In The System 1-12

OOC: You may have notice the glaring error in Round 5.  I mixed up Kri'lik and S'Krllk.  Since Baralou was nowhere near Kri'lik, I meant that she actually shot S'Krllk for 21 dmg, not Kri'lik.  Please make that correction.  (That means S'Krllk has suffered a total of 33 dmg so far, leaving just 7 STA, unless he has a protective suit.)

ROUND 6

S'Krllk is reloading his laser pistol when he sees Baralou aiming at him.

Yag fires three times, hitting Baralou twice. (29 dmg)

Baralou fires, making two impressive shots directly on S'Krllk.  (1 shot was a critical hit.  S'Krllk takes 39 damage.  Unless I'm mistaken, that reduces him to -32 STA.  He is thus unconscious and on the brink of death.  Staydol is required within 1 minute to prevent him from dying.)

Kuurn fires past the retreating Desi, hitting the ice cutter robot twice.  (88 dmg)

Desi runs back into the room, dropping a tangler grenade just as she presses the button for the door to close.

She escapes harm this round, and the door closes before the robots can give chase.  The only exception is the gorilla robot, which is fast and slender.  It jumps through the doorway, tackling Desi.  You hear the blast of the tangler going off behind the door but do not know the effects.

The gorilla robot knocks Desi's weapon from her hand and is grappling her on the ground.  Shooting at it could very likely hit her.

Also, although a tangler went off, the security door is not locked.  Someone needs to lock it to be sure to get warning before more robots burst through.

And don't forget about helping S'Krllk in the next few rounds.  One more hit from gun or grenade and he's a goner even with Staydol.

(NOTE: I allow Staydol to revive up to negative STA.  So a 40 STA character can get to -40 STA and still be revived.)

HEALTH REMAINING:

Security Robot: destroyed
Maintenance Robot: destroyed
Engine Maintenance Robot: 100/100
Ice Cutter Robot: 314/500
Gorilla Robot: 100/100
Baralou:  18/100

ROUND 7

Kri'lik hits the emergency lock on the security door.

Desi performs a wrestling maneuver and manages to push off the gorilla robot.

Kri'lik fires, hitting the gorilla robot twice.  It launches to its feet, and then rolls off to the side, disappearing into the smoke that covers the room.  It is somewhere to the western side of the room, and although its thermal cameras can see you, it is invisible to you.

You hear a sound from outside the door.  It is the sound of that ice cutting torch cutting through strands of a tangler grenade.

Yag fires, hitting Baralou once.  (10 dmg.)  Baralou is now so wracked with wounds that you can see her metallic undercarriage and frame glinting.

Baralou fires at Yag, hitting him once.  (16 dmg.)

S'Krllk is still unconscious and fading fast. (-3 hp per round until bandaged.)

Yag sees the life seeping out of S'Krllk and realizes he is running out of time and ammo. With only two rounds left in his gyro pistol, that is all he can fire this turn. He tries to finish off Baralou once and for all:

14:59, Today: Yagrith rolled 16 using 1d100. Yag shot #1.
14:59, Today: Yagrith rolled 63 using 1d100. Yag shot #2.
14:59, Today: Yagrith rolled 14 using 2d10. Shot #1 dmg.

[Note: -10% to hit for short range and another -10 for being at < half STA, but that first one should still hit the mark.]

After firing he tosses down his gun and tends to the unconscious Vrusk.

Base to hit with gyrojet: 48
STA: 6
Skeinsuit STA left: 14
Ammo left in weapon: EMPTY!

[Post edited to correct that Yag only has 6 STA left]

ROUND 8
Yag fires again, and Baralou's damaged body slumps to the ground.  As Yag tends to S'Krllk, he hears a loud thump.

For Desi, the sound of the thump is punctuated by the impact of the gorilla robot slamming into her, once again knocking her to the ground.  This time, it pummels her in the face.  (14 dmg)

You still hear the sounds of cutting from the far side of the security door.

Yag also sees blinking from the computer against the far wall where Baralou had been standing.  She had been doing something before the final showdown.

S'Krllk is conscious again.  (1 STA after a dose of Staydol.)

Kri'lik's mandibles click together in slight confusion as he hears Yag calling S'Krllk 'Doc'. I guess in the heat of the moment a Vrusk looks like any other to a non Vrusk.

Checking his laser pistol again and upping the setting to 10 SEUs he nods to Desi indicating he is ready for whatever comes through that door. "We need help in here, company is headed our way!" The professor says as the ice cutter burns its way through the door.

"How is everyone?" He says as he has not taken his eyes off the door and the robots beyond it as of yet.

If the robots show themselves he fires twice at the closest one, otherwise he will begin to work his way to S'Krllk to start first aid...
