Treading on Manor Grounds

The party concludes its investigation of the Gatehouse, and following Ligeia’s lead exits the structure.

Though much has transpired already it is still the morning of the same day.

To the north of the gatehouse a low wall runs as far as you can see in the mist (30’).  To the south you see the same.
The low walls seem to separate the manor grounds from the moat below.  Ahead of you is the road you came in on, and behind is the bridge, Jenouise’s carriage and mule.

The slightly green mist moves slowly ever present and limiting visibility to 30’ in any direction.

Somewhere in the distance you hear the distinct sound of organ music playing.

Rubus, perhaps in sermonizing mode, says Perhaps it's a sign from the Messiah; or, more likely, a part of the evil that has befallen this area. Either way, I think we shoudl approach. And let us remember that whatever is playing the music may not harm us unless, mayhap, we seek to harm it. He pauses. Uh, well, I guess it's better than random wandering.

Ligeia falls in step next to the mildly capering clown as she and the others tread across the grounds of Blackwell Manor.

"We all must find ways to pass the time, one way or another," she muses, as she listens to the melancholic music. "Some, I fear, have been awarded a endless surfeit of time."

The party moves forward along the gravel road and just ahead finds a crossroads.  The road you are on continues to the west.  Another road going north appears just ahead.  To the southwest is a low wall about 3' high with a gate.  A smaller road or path runs along it and to the south.

Just in front of the gate stands an old woman with a hoe, quietly talking to herself as she digs in the ground, apparently tending a flower bed where no flowers are growing.

All roll initiative and also a WIS check please.

She speaks in a voice, though audible sounds like a long way off, as though from someone stuck at the bottom of a well.

Fixing her eyes on the group she looks longing on you saying-

Ligeia passes through the gate and Rubus closes it.  It clicks with a latch.  The gate does not open by itself again.

The area beyond the gate has a low hill which then dips inward into what seems to be an open field.  there is a line of trees, now leafless and barren going west.  The wall 3' high goes to the west and south.  All is quiet.

"If the manor now stands before us, which it nearly must, the wagon is fine where it is. It's not like any of the living will molest it or any of the dead, care to. Let's just track south a bit to get the lay of the land."

Umm ok Ligeia I am not sure what is going on here with the INT check. If you are trying to increase your skill in this spell to "advanced" you cannot do that in a single round of combat. You have to do that when you are able to focus on doing that. So I am reading this now as you cast the spell and got 10.

As you did pass it, you can be allowed to advance this spell, when you have the time to do it, but you cannot "level up" anything in such a brief amount of time.  Also do you have 2 skill points that you have been awarded that are unused?

ALSO!- lol let's see some roleplay here !  what do you do to cast the Undead spell?

Jenouise's look at Rubus's reaction is that of pure surprise, her eyes wide, lips pursed out in an o shape and for once, she didn't try to make a jest...hell, she didn't even make a comment. Instead, her look shifting into that of discomfort, she looked to Ligeia and quickly followed after her, not wanting a part in that.

Re: The Knight

The party runs south following Ligeia's surprisingly fast little legs.  Making their way across the flat field they are on,  they soon find another rise and scramble over that.  Before you is another 3' high stone wall and the moat beyond that down a hill.  To the SE you see a two stone tower where the wall around the field you are on joins it. It takes about 20 seconds for you all to move quickly to this point in unfamiliar terrain in the mist.

The heavy tower door rotted from age, easily moves open to a point. As Ligeia pushes it open, it moves forward a bit and meets resistance as if something is lying on the floor behind it.
The room inside is dark and emits a pungent irritating odor.

The staff gleams a white instantly and quite brightly.

Pushing open the door you can see debris on the floor inside and a faint edge of a chest or bureau. As you open the door something on the ground beyond prevents you from opening it normally.

To open the door it will need to be forced a little. Any PC is welcome to try STR check.

Alaric's torch and Rubus's torch reveal a grisly scene indeed.

Apparently a dead body was on the floor behind the door.  There are 4 bodies with all their gear and packs lying near the entrance and gear lying on the stairs going up with no body.

A combination of the smell of death and the overriding pungent irritating smell lingers in the air as well.  There is a Chest in the NW corner with a padlock on it, and one in the SW corner which is similarly locked.  A trap door is in the center of the room.

As Rubus begins dragging out the remains- knight first.. he notices they all still have gear with them. He wears a dark blue cloak in the color of Messiah, and carries a shield of the Knights of the grail. He is wearing scale mail armor, a helm, a silver necklace with a chalice pendant, a purse, and a dagger.  His sword is lying on the ground where it fell. The cloak his clothes boots and skin are a bit corroded.

There is a gnarled staff in one hand and she bears a backpack and bedroll.  A leather purse is on her waist and ruined clothes and boots are on her body.  She wears a sapphire blue ring on one hand.

"As for 'Lightbearer,' here," she begins, trying out a two-handed grip on the longsword, "it is anything but."

"Well, these weren't ordinary folks. That is plain to see. And fortunate for us to have discovered them in our flight from the black knight. It is ... incumbent ... upon me to commune with one of their spirits to learn what could have overwhelmed them here in this tower.."

She walks over to the midden of gear by the stairs. But where did the body go? She begins to pick through it for clues.

When finished, she will walk over to the object of Jenouise's fascination, the locked chest, and pronounces the litany of discovery, brandishing her holy symbol at the appropriate intervals. If there are no traps to be found on the chest or beyond, it is but short work to make the lock fall to the floor.

Though you don't know much about Terran religions the bible seems normal. The scrolls are indeed in scriptural text as are the two glass vials

Ligeia finds no traps and does indeed pick the simple lock. The chest in the NW corner has the following in it.

a Wooden box with 24 cross bow bolts.
Bottle of oil for blades
A stone blade sharpener
a folded Blackwell Coat of Arms Flag

a bag of 30 sling stones

a felt bag with 10 silver sling stones

a spyglass range 1 mile

As Rubus reads the scroll aloud, the sword that Gorn is holding and the general area of the tower begin to glow in a pure white light.  The Scriptural Characters on the page also seem to glow with the same light as they are read, and then the letters disappear.

Oddly the area of the tower and a little bit beyond it seem to have no green mist flowing through it anymore. Patches of sunlight drift down over this tower.

Without a second thought, Ligeia hands the blade over to Gorn. She breathes a sigh of relief. She had been that close to becoming some kind of insufferable paladin. The two divine scrolls, she forces on Rubus. As for herself, she keeps the spyglass.

As sunbeams start to find this Blackwell tower, she pronounces with satisfaction that she doesn't think the black knight will "trouble us within these consecrated grounds." Then, she grimaces. Was it already too late? Had merely holding the cursed sword been enough?

Rubus nods. Yes, I heard as a sound or something impacting my brain. A deep dark growl. As a possibly wild guess, a sound made by an entity that's causing all this or is part of all this...something held in place, maybe. Or it could be that all this is alive, in  sense, in a way. There are arrow notches in the center of each wall and the roof has caved in showing a big hole in the ceiling. The trail of blood that Gorn described heads all the way up the stairs and then directly under the hole before it stops.  Boards and stone debris liter the floor.

The sun shines down through the green mist directly overhead offering a brief pause in the otherwise spooky din of this place.  But even as they walk about the mist begins to slowly close the break in the phenomena which Rubus's remove curse spell caused.

With two succinct yet effective prayers, she relieves herself and Gorn of their most recent wounds.

Recovered, she surveys the subterranean chamber they all now occupy with its three exits,  west, northeast, and up. She points to the northeastern one, "Might that one take us closer to, if not to, the manor?"

Then she points to the stairs and speaks,"First, let's see if this tower is more hospitable than the last. Come, Jenousie, if you could light the way," before climbing the stairs and trying the trapdoor.
