Quick question: link to a specific post within a thread?

Hi all.

I'm trying to figure out how to link to a specific post within a thread of a thousand of them.  I know it has something to do with the message number, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the coding to work.  I don't (think I) need a tutorial on how; just a sample link that I could then adapt for myself.

Thanks,

--IndyPendant.

Re: Quick question: link to a specific post within a thread?

If you go to the thread, click [all] if it's got multiple pages. When it's open, copy the url from your browser's address bar and add # then the message number at the end.

So it would be like:

http://www.rpol.net/url#20

That should be all you need to do, in order to copy it and link to a message number.

Ha!  Perfect, exactly what I needed, thanks.  (I was just making it too complicated; I kept trying to put "msg", or "post", or "msg#", or something in front of the number. ; )

Yeah, it's less complicated than it seems on first glance.

Re: Quick question: link to a specific post within a thread?

If its not in the FAQs maybe we can put it there.

Might already be there just hard to find.

As a GM I use this sort of thing, usually in the "link see msg # X", style to refer to our setting, equipment or reference threads. Especially when brining new players into an established game.

Re: Quick question: link to a specific post within a thread?

Quick Note of caution: I was reading in another forum about this workaround. A very useful one for sure! The thread I read (which now I can't seem to find. :/) made a good point.

You will want to avoid using the [all] feature on threads with a lot of posts. Say, more than 100. It could potentially lag players with older computers or otherwise slower devices. This is because the all feature bypasses the 25 post limit and loads every post in the thread, even if there are 500, before jumping to the one specified.

Of course, it seems to me an eloquent solution for instruction threads and helping new players though, as Brygun mentioned above.

Re: Quick question: link to a specific post within a thread?

It's kinda still tied up in development - I think we were hoping to get a 'link' option (alongside bold, center etc) that did all the hard work for you.  But current syntax ...

Here's a link to Leora's msg #6 above as an example:

link to a message in this forum

Syntax is:

http://rpol.net/display.cgi?gi=7&ti=4866&msgpage=&show=all#6

     gi is game index
     ti is thread index
you can find both gi and ti by opening the specific thread and looking in the address bar in your browser
the number right at the end is the message in that thread to which you want to link
show=all argument is required otherwise link won't work once thread goes to multiple pages
doesn't work if the linked post has been deleted (obviously)
