THE ROAD TO WEIRMONKEN (with probable bunny drop-off first)

(New no-longer-in-Tanus thread for your use)

Laurence, the librarian, is indeed on-duty in the library when you get there.

(Jon, where in the castle or on the castle grounds do you find King Random? What's he up to?)

"I-- I... I..." Laurence is taken aback by the site of Hless, and studies him. He steps forward, fascinated. "Well...! Where did you find this little fellow...?" The urge to reach out and pet Hless appears to be strong in Laurence...

It looks like Hless sort of fidgets at that moment, but to anyone who knows that Hless is sentient, it's clear that he's nodding.

There has been some record, from time to time, of a land with lots of (one-)horned bunnies, somewhere vaguely between the Shadows of Lambay and Kashfa. There are written descriptions. Jade and Laurence work together to make a sort of descriptive map with step-by-step instructions of how to find Hless's home Shadow.

(Jade and Laurence write out instructions, as best as they can, on how to find Hless's home Shadow. Jade will have to make the Move Through Shadow move-- hopefully just once. The library records aren't so good that you'll get an extra bonus, but at least you won't get a penalty or anything, either. If you're lucky, you may be able to arrive there after just one roll...)

Jade gets in the carriage with Ariadne waiting for Prince Jon.

She then controls the shadow ride away from Amber looking for Hless home.
The way starts off as the other trip but diverges before they reach Tanus. The lands are greener that they ride through and sparkling water shines. The carriage rides through some mist from a waterfall and past some large dolman like standing stones. She focuses on one of the birds that was described in the books within Laurence's library. As they ride along she sings a soft Rebman lullaby to Hless as she pets him.

Finally the carriage, going increasingly slowly because of being on what's barely a clear dirt track, shifts and is on simple short green grass.

On a hill stands a very large, tall tree, wide with green branches. There are similar hills, though not all have trees, and none as big as this one, for as far as the eye can see.

And bunnies! One-horned bunnies like Hless are everywhere. The carriage stops as bunnies rapidly hop away from this strange large newcomer on wheels.

Hless, in his basket, gets a little excited. "Where are we? Are we there? This smells right-- very right!"

Ariadne had been focusing her attention on Jade and how she was moving thrm through shadow.  She had to sort of unfocus her eyes a bit to actually look around her at her surroundings.  She blinked in surprise at the bizarre surroundings.  Amber and Tanus had been exotic, but in a London or Marrakesh kind of exotic.
This place, however, was almost like a cartoon

You go over to the huge tree.

The fruit growing off the tree is easy for you to reach (not so for the bunnies) and seems like kind of in-between an apple and a plum, maybe? Only just a little bigger than a big apple?

However, they also don't quite seem ripe yet. "Oh, they're not quite ready. No wonder none of them are on the ground yet. Well, each of you take one with you, and then wait a few days! Then they'll be ready! But just take one each, or else they'll take much longer to ripen."

You seem like an especially magical family. I don't think anyone could come here but you, if a magic storm didn't bring them here by accident. Could they?"

The cousins think... No... But what about the Chaosites, and the Gray Men, and the Black Road...? It would be terrible if the Black Road ever came through here... Maybe you should check back on Hless every now and then...?

"I  mean, there was very few people who can travel between worlds like we can, and the are an incredible number of worlds to go to.  So, mathematically, it's possible but incredibly unlikely."

She looked around for a fast second, then back at Hless.
"It's a bit like this:  it's like if a leaf fell off a tree in another part of the forest, so far away from you that you couldn't see it with your eyes.  And as the leaf fell, the wind caught it, and carried it around on the breeze until it landed here at your feet.   Now, the odds of that happening are not impossible, but they're definitely so small that they seem like it"

Jon does his best... and... he... gets a bit lost.

When he comes to a stop... there's a huge mountain.

Really huge. Larger than Everest, thinks Ariadne. Much larger. Can there even be air at the top of that-- well, sure there can, maybe, this isn't Earth. For all we know, the air might be the same for a thousand miles straight up-- who knows?

One of the soldiers accompanying the carriage rides up. "...This Shadow is called Bercarro, your graces. There's some sort of magic carriage thing that transports workers up and down to and from the town over there by that river... up to a mine entrance that starts about halfway up the mountain, see? We're just on the, ah, the north side. This is sort of one Shadow away from Weirmonken, or just a few, anyway. It might be a good idea, though, as long as we're here, to head to the town and ask if there's been any recent news..."

"Normally you'd be correct, milady, but Becarro and Weirmonken are a little like Amber and Rebma... there is a path between them that travelers can use, even though technically they count as two different Shadows... it's a longer path for those who aren't royal Amberites such as yourselves, but it can still be done, even without the blood of Oberon. There is limited trade between the two Shadows... when times are good, anyway... That may or may not be the case currently..."

Jon listens intently to the Guard and Ari's exchange with interest. He smiles when Jade speaks up. Jon nods in agreement. "I apologize for the delay and error in travel to all of you.  And I agree with with Solider..." looks a bit ashamed "I'm sorry, I haven't learned all of your names yet." then sits a bit straighter and carries on "Your advice is wise and sound. If you would be kind to lead the way, we shall follow." his tone is friendly, if a bit formal as he finishes and there is a faint blush.

Internally he is mad at himself for messing up the trip ~I can't believe I did that. I should be better at this.~ and his internal anger fades into a self loathing. ~I am useless, back in Tanus and now this. Perhaps, I really didn't earn the rank of Ranger back home. Perhaps it was all a ruse...~

OOC: FIY, the dialog between the ~ is all internal, unless you have telepathy, you wouldn't be able to hear it.  I posted it for context, I'm trying to show Jon internal conflicts better.

Jade smiles at Jon.

"No need to apologize, I didn't get shadow travel right for a time. You did amazingly well, with only the description of others. Besides we get to see this amazing site." She gestures to the mountain, "It is larger than Kolvir and that is the largest mountain I have ever seen. We might even find something interesting in the site our guard told us of."

Still Jade had not forgotten the gray men and that they were hunted and so kept a keen eye out for trouble.

Jon:
Jon listens intently to the Guard and Ari's exchange with interest. He smiles when Jade speaks up. Jon nods in agreement. "I apologize for the delay and error in travel to all of you.  And I agree with with Solider..." looks a bit ashamed "I'm sorry, I haven't learned all of your names yet." then sits a bit straighter and carries on "Your advice is wise and sound. If you would be kind to lead the way, we shall follow."

"My name is Pavel, milord. Let us continue on to the town of Beccaro proper."

You roll and ride forward, respectively, and come to the town. It looks like a town of perhaps 10, 15 thousand people? They're dressed in what Ariadne thinks of as vaguely late-19th-century clothing-- but with no class distinction-- there are-- so far, at least-- no disgustingly-poor people, and no fancy rich people. The social range seems to spread only from "Upper-lower-class" to "middle-upper-class," with hardly anyone at all under nor over that range. It doesn't seem to be the part of town you're in, either. Everyone seems to just be doing okay financially.

Jon notices too, but less.

Jade hardly notices it at all-- Rebma, too, takes care of its own-- but why not? The wealth of the sea is plentiful, and food there even more so.

People seem clearly mildly surprised to see you traveling through the streets, but not really astounded like in Tanus. Just more like hey, here's something you don't see every day.

Eventually, you get to a very large town square//courtyard, with large multi-story buildings on all sides. "I've been here just once, your graces," says Pavel. "That building there is the city hall. There's a trading office for Amber in that building over there, on the other hand-- the closest thing here to an embassy."

Jon waits for Jade and Ari, offering to assist them down if they so like.

No indeed-- it's mostly cloudy, in fact.

And in less than an hour, the shadow of the mountain will fall over this spot.

It gets dark early in the town of Becarro. No wonder they have so many lamp-posts here and there.

A man of perhaps 40 answers the door. "Yes?" He immediately does a double-take, and makes a little imaginary-hoof-pawing-the-ground gesture that Jade has sometimes seen people in Amber who are devout members of the Church of the Unicorn do. "Um... hello. How may I help you?" He doesn't know who the three people in front of him are, but he sees Jade's green hair, and especially stares at Ariadne. These are out-of-town visitors, and important, he can tell that much.

"No-- the ones who came back are the ones who weren't attacked at all. No one that we know of has been attacked and then also escaped. We have no proof that any caravans have been attacked at all-- we just know they've gone missing. ...I have heard, though, that some sort of monster was seen attacking-- and killing-- the mayor of Weirmonken. The last caravan to come back told us that. They didn't see it themselves, but it's what they were told."

Re: THE ROAD TO WEIRMONKEN (with probable bunny drop-off first)

It was a measure of Ariadne's acting abilities that she immediately didn't do a confused double take, realizing that "Oh Crap!!!  We ARE the police!!!"
Ari had hardly been a "damsel in distress" back in Earth, preferring to handle her own protection and occasionally that of her friends, if need be.   She'd even gotten a bit of a reputation of being a kind of guard dog when a friend was being hassled by a creeoy guy in a bar or even on a movie set, and Ariadne had always been loathe to ask for help in such circumstances.
This, however, was a different situation.   While She'd been happy to drop kick a celebrity stalker or creepy barfly, she'd never been a vigilante or part of law enforcement, and it was just dawning on her that, as a member of the Amber Royalty, she was both.

Instead, she nodded.
"Well, then, perhaps we can see what we can do, or at the very least gather information to send back to the king or other higher authorities.   But i also wanted to know if you'd tried to investigate and what you'd found.   What else can you tell us?"

She was already trying to come up with plans to deal with this, like a stealth mission to the border, or maybe taking a fake caravan to the border?
Honestly, knowing that she could actually arrange such extravagant and important decisions made her a little bit light headed with wonder

"Ah... I'm not sure what else I can tell you, your grace. I have summarized all that I know." He tries not to shrug, and barely succeeds. "The people of Bercarro simply presume that the shapeshifters that plagued Weirmonken in long-ago times are behind the disappearances of the traders-- especially since one apparently killed its mayor recently, or so we were told. I... admit that that could be the work of a rogue, since they are said to go mad sometimes-- as individuals, I mean-- but add the other disappearances to it, and...

Is there... some... other specific information you wish to know...?"

Ariadne almost bit her lip in thought, but stopped herself just in time. That, she realized, might undermine her authority as a Badass if she were nibbling her lower lip in consternation.
She nodded, mostly to buy time for what to ask.  She was usually not at a loss for words, but this was definitely outside her comfort zone.   It reminded her of an Improv Comedy class she'd taken as part of her acting classes.   The class had been EXCRUCIATING.  It was like being on a high stakes game show where the grand prize was not being humiliated in front of her classmates.

Looking at Mr. Tazik, Ariadne shrugged
"Well, to be honest, I'm a little new to the area, so perhaps you could refresh my memory about these shapeshifters?"

"Oh! I see..." He sort of squints at Jade a little. "Actually, I can sort of see it, if I don't focus on the hair..."

"Well if people from here are going missing when close to the territories we are going to, I must admit I don't mind giving an impression of strength and that we are prepared to deal with any raiders or similar attacks coming our way. I don't think that their army or government are the ones behind the attacks but I could be wrong. We must be prepared also for the possibility the Graymen are behind these atrocities. So we cannot appear to be weak at all."

Jade then looked from Jon to Ariadne, "What do we collectively know of the weir ? I only know of what I read in the books. Very fast to heal from even lethal wounds except for silver or special swords. Also I think your mother broke ones spine over her knee. It is unclear though if that permanently crippled the creature. I say we use our heads, local lore since they are more familiar with the problem and use the resources available here to prepare."

Jade fidgeted a bit, "Also escape routs are something we need to discuss as well as where to meet if we get separated. As for avoiding looking like an invading force, Ariadne or myself are fairly good speakers and might calm tensions down. Also, well above the waves most men tend to think women are weak and less of a threat to them."

Jon nods to Jade "I understand your concern about appearing weak, but I think Ari has a good idea of trying to lure them in.  That does align with how I didn't want to appear to be a heavily armed scout force at the head of an invasion force." he pauses in thought for a moment.

"I was think we get a second cart and have most of our soldier ride hidden in it with the extra armaments, so that we appear like a small caravan with few guards and a the enticement of a fancy coach which would indicate potential good hostages." he smiles as he looks at Jade and Ari. "But we know that neither of you are damsels in distress, so that will be a nice added shock to them. Meanwhile, I will trade out my normal outfit for something local, so I blend in better with the few visible guards."

He sits back and pauses "As to what we know of about Weirmonken...The shapeshifters came to Weirmonken, were not initially native and starting attacking the village and surrounding shadows.  Amber waged intermittent skirmishes with them until Prince Eric soundly defeated them and put the treaty in place.  The treaty which allowed the shapeshifters to live in the forest of Weirmonken, so long as they did not attack the villagers or nearby shadows. According to Uncle Julian, he and Ballad learned that the Mayor of Weirmonken was killed by one of the shapeshifter and a scout sent to get help was also killed. These sound like violations of the treaty.  And Uncle Julian stated that the shapeshifters used to come to Arden to be killed before a madness overtook them and that they had a strong sense of honor." he stops, gets up and goes to his bag.  He pulls out a journal and brings it back to the table and starts flipping through his notes.

Turns to Ari, "I'm not sure how to tell the villagers from the shapeshifters, unless they turn."

He sets the journal on the table and holds the pages open "Lord Dworkin said that there were four type of shapeshifters. Lethings which started as villagers or people who were turned. They transform fully either human or beastial. Thegns, which seem to be part of the migration.  They have a few different forms; but they again are all or nothing. The Gedriht, which are able to control their transformations and can transorm parts of their body.  These were the captains of the shapeshifters forces.  Lastly were the Æthelings (Aethelings), which can constantly shapeshift and I infer that they can have multiple difference aspects to different parts of their body.  These last two are the most deadly and at the time seemed to chosen to leave Weirmonken after the signing of the Treaty." he pauses "Let's hope we are not dealing with any of the last two."

We could use their input and assistance." he lets out a little sigh "Can't dwell on that.  So let's review.  We are going to buy extra arms and an extra cargo wagon or two. We then pose as a trade caravan and see if we are attacked or make it to the village. If we are attacked, we try to capture as many as possible and take them to the village.  Once in the village, we need to see about the people and get their side of what is going on and if then interrogate anyone we capture." he pauses "Does that sound about right for the over all plan?"

Ariadne chuckled at Jon's words, though it was a friendly, affectionate chuckle and smirk.
"I also appreciate your concern, Jon.  I like to think I can handle myself when things get rough, but I'm still pretty much out of my depth here.  As rough and tumble as my world is, with crime and corruption in many places, it's still a land of law and order, for the most part, so I'd probably never even think about doing this one Earth, going out to lure in raiders or highwaymen or whatever. "

She bit her lip, thinking.
"But you're right.  The biggest problem is that we don't know how many raiders there are for each raid.  I mean, I can presume that they'd want a small group, perhaps a dozen or so, in order to stay mobile and be able to hide if they need to, but that's literally just a guess on my part.   For all I know, they might attack each carriage and convoy with a group of hundreds of soldiers.  I mean, that seems like overkill to me, but I literally have no idea who these people are and how they think."

The tall woman shrugged.
"This might be a weird idea, but would it help if we tried to get some baseline surveillance and intelligence about their operation?   Perhaps the three of us, maybe with a few soldiers if you think we need them, can sneak into the area and set up some kind of hiding place to watch for other carriages and activities, and see them in action?"

Ariadne chuckled.
"Unless that means we'll be waiting around for months, or something."

Quite the opposite, in fact.  I trust you both with my life, it is just my secondary priority it your safety.  Because if this goes south, someone needs to return to Amber and bring reinforcements and coordinate.  You two are much better at that than I am."

Jon nods "I agree, once we have an idea of where they might be camping, we could use our abilities to infiltrate the and observe their base. Unfortunately, it does not seem that there are any caravans leaving from here for us to watch. I mean I guess we could ask them to send one and some of us can be a part of that.  We use the Cards to stay in touch and relay what we see. But that seems more risky."

Smiles at Jade "Yes, this is definitely more aimed at a Diplomatic mission than a Military intervention, which is why we have such a small escort from Amber."

He leans back, puts his hands behind his head and ponders for a few "So how do you two want to proceed? The easiest is that we take our carriage and escort and just head to Weirmonken. Alternately, we try to make our group enticing and try to ambush the ambushers with the hope of capturing some for interrogation or following them back to their base."

Re: THE ROAD TO WEIRMONKEN (with probable bunny drop-off first)

Ariadne frowned as she pondered options.
"Well, I was thinking we could go to the main caravan route and lure them in, but perhaps that's a bit naïve and arrogant.  I don't want to get us in over our heads.  I know I'm still new at this stuff.   I was also thinking we could go up the caravan route a bit, then try to sneak around, scouting the area.   I'm not sure how feasible that is."

She looked at Jade and smirked.
"I had a great conversation with a horse wrangler on one of my movies.  He talked about a few tricks to discourage scent dogs.  Maybe that might work. "

Ariadne looked over at Pavel.   She'd always been pretty good at judging character back on Earth, but these foreigners (which was definitely an understatement) were more challenging.   Still, while Jade wasn't as good in hand to hand as she or Jon, she was definitely better than "rando guard #3" (to put it in movie parlance.  And with her magic, she could most certainly clean the guy's clock.  Despite her lingering paranoia, Ariadne decided to trust that the green haired woman would be okay, and joined Jon.

Ariadne pursed her lips as she pondered the question.  Her frame of reference was setting up an action shot on a movie, or at the very least causing trouble among obnoxious drunk frat boys, where no one wanted to really hurt anyone.   This was like setting up a police sting operation, and that was actually a bit scary.  With a sigh of almost resignation, she nodded.
"I'll ride on the back horse.  It's been a few years since I've ridden, but I used to be reasonably good at it, so I'm sure it'll come back to me."

Pavel leaves the hint of other possibilities, such as starting at or near dusk... or later... unspoken for the moment, waiting to hear what the royals will say...

(We didn't. Lieutenant sounds fine to me.)

Pavel bites his lip, hesitates, looks worried, opens his mouth, looks around... and his gaze lights on the local guide you hired. Pavel's face lights up-- you can almost see an imaginary blazing lantern appear over his head, such is his moment of enlightenment. "...It's our native guide, your grace," Pavel says. "He's skittish as hell. If you're looking for my recommendation, I think if we started out at dawn, he'd have a much better chance of keeping his emotions under control and not panicking on this mission... My men and I would be sure he barracked with us tonight, of course, to make sure he doesn't just decide to take a sudden vacation before morning..."

And so, Simonel Tazik leads the cousins to a pub... The Silver Cloud.

It's a large building of stone walls and a slate-covered roof, with what you're told is a well-stocked wine cellar. Along with wine, they also have various beers and harder liqueurs-- Tazik seems mildly enthusiastic about the rum.

The proprietor (a tall, heavyset man with a well-trimmed beard, in his late 50s, perhaps) suggests a bread and cheese plate with hard cider, mmm?

There's a harpist playing over on a small dias... nice and relaxing stuff.

One woman, tall and thin with straight black hair (but cut shorter than the other women in the Silver Cloud), is very affected. She stands helpless, weeping silently by the end of the song.

When Jade is done, the woman walks up to her. "What... what was that song...?"

This woman doesn't dress like the local women... It's fancier, with darker colors (not as dark as what Ariadne wears, but darker and more subdued). More leather and lace, buccaneer boots.

Re: THE ROAD TO WEIRMONKEN (with probable bunny drop-off first)

Ariadne took a sip of her cider, which was excellent, and ate some of the cheese, which was odd but not offputing.
She looked around the room, glass in hand (as an LA girl, she had learned long ago not to leave cups unattended), and tried to surreptitiously check out the crowd.    She'd gotten pretty good at surveying trouble spots and interesting people back home, but things were very new here.   The music was a bit subdued, but that let her concentrate better on her surroundings.  Jade was singing along with the harpist, and Ari nodded her head with the tune.
When a random woman walked up, tears in her eyes, it occurred to Ari that "Jade Singing" wasn't the harmless random thing that it should have been.   She winced and mentally kicked herself for forgetting, once again, about the weird magical shenanigans that were so common here.

She spoke up at the woman's question.
"We're from Tanus.  We're merchants, looking for new venues for trade and friendship"
Belatedly, she realized that she'd been hoping that they could just drink in peace, staying somewhat anonymous.
Ariadne realized now that a good cover story would have been a good idea.   Summoning up all she'd learned about Tanus, Ari started putting together a rough back story in her mind.

It had been a game, back in West Hollywood, when she and her friends had hit the bars after shooting on a movie or something similar.    The women had all stood out, especially in straight bars, even among a crowd of Hollywood drinkers, and always attracted a lot of attention, with many patrons asking who they were, what they did for a living, etc.   And they'd learned the hard way that talking about movie sets and stunt work was a great way to get swamped and bombarded with questions, and basically losing all privacy and any chance to relax.   So they took turns, with one of them inventing a job and sometimes backstories for everyone.  They'd figure out who's "turn" it was, and that person would, if the subject came up, introduce everyone, including fake names, and tell their "story".     The quartet of woman had been UCLA coeds taking a study break, a group of nurses getting off shift, kindergarten teachers getting courage to return to work the next day, or a bachelorette party after the groom hooked up with the caterer.   Having had a couple of improv classes in college, Ariadne wasn't bad at the game, though pretending to be a bride pining for her man had been a bit of a challenge, though not quite as much as pretending to be a nurse.  Nurses had very complicated jobs, it turned out.

This time, though, Ariadne smiled and looked at the woman, admiring her outfit and her hair, and went into the routine.
"Montevalno?  I've never been.  Is that nice?"

"Eh? Um... pardon me, but you don't seem like you're from... Ohhhh, you mean you've been sent here by Tanus, you work for them. Well that makes sense. Are you... able to talk about it?" She said it, Ariadne thought, like someone might say Did you sign an NDA?

Ariadne:
"Montevalno?  I've never been.  Is that nice?"

That not-exactly-happy look again. "Mm. Some people like it."

Jade:
"I am Jasmine by the way." She smiles to the woman.

The return-smile is geniune. "I'm Marlena. Marlena Archarossi." And there's that look again. What is it... dissatisfaction? A bad memory? A family thing? Let's see, what have I been told about Montevalno, again...? each cousin thinks...

Ariadne smiled, though inside she winced, forgetting that the variety of people in Tanus wasn't as varied as she'd have liked.  But their new friend had accidentally covered for her, so she rolled with it.  She spoke in a friendly way as she discussed details.
"Yes, exactly.  It's all merchant business, and you know how they get.  But that's business, and we're here to relax, after all."

She looked at the woman, really trying to get a feel for her mood, and frowned gently and spoke in what was hopefully a sympathetic way.
"Are you alright?  You seem upset, or sad.  Is there anything we can do?"

Montevalno is known to be a dramatic Golden Circle Shadow where the families often scheme to get more power, prestige, status, money, and/or revenge... Maybe this is family trouble? Or Marlena's on the run? Or... a scheme failed...? Or she's having trouble with one...?

Marlena puts her own hands behind her back for a second, closes her eyes, frowns, concentrating... And then brings her hands forward-- her right hand puts the same glass (sure looks like the same glass!) on the table in front of her.

But that's impossible, Ariadne is still holding th--

--No she's not.

Ariadne had had an idea of what was maybe supposed-t'-be going to happen, so she'd kept a careful grip on the cider glass-- so when Marlena had made her final move, Ariadne had brought the glass forward to-- wait, where'd it go? She'd had it, felt it, was feeling it, but somehow when she'd sent a message to her muscles, nerves, and skin hey bring that thing forward again, quick, her fingers were like "sure okay wait what thing? Did we have a thing still? You sure? I don't think that's right, is it?"

Marlena doesn't look proud of herself-- she looks kind of disgusted with herself, really...

Marlena sighs. "Yes, I know, it seems impressive as anything in this context, but... I'm not great at it. It has to be something I've recently touched. I have to be very still and concentrate. It can't be very far away from me. It helps if I'm just a little... tipsy. I can do other things, too, but it's all... very limited.

And my family... they were... interested... when they found out I had some small magical talents... when I was young... so they paid for me to get trained somewhat... but I'm just... not that powerful. So then when it turned out I'd never be all that useful with what I can do... they resented it. Now that I'm an adult and not getting any more skilled, I'm just constantly in the doghouse with them...

And it's... so... foolish? I know some people get rejected by their families because of their politics or their faith or because they love the wrong person or they're too greedy or too ambitious or even too ugly or too clumsy but... I can do magic! And they'd be fine with that-- but they can't use that part of me! And they hate that! Feeling bad about it is as foolish as why they make me feel bad about it! But I do!"

Re: THE ROAD TO WEIRMONKEN (with probable bunny drop-off first)

Despite coming from a fairly unconventional family (which is an understatement she'd have trouble saying with a straight face), Ariadne had always had a wonderful, loving, supportive father.  He might have had a secret agenda in training her to, hopefully, return to Amber someday, but his feelings towards her have always been genuine and loving.   Ariadne had always taken this for granted, and even believed it was the same for all families as she grew up.  But even as early as middle school, the young woman began to see that her situation in life was very privileged, in more ways than one.  She had rebelled against this on many occasions, but eventually accepted it.  When she turned her gaze towards other people, she saw that many of her classmates had parents living vicariously through them and lived with a Sword of Damocles over them in terms of their productivity and school careers.
In college, it was even worse.  Though still a bit self-absorbed, Ari saw students who seemed to be the saviors of their families, and even saw a few buckle under the pressure.  She remembered, back at Boston University, coming back to a woman's campus apartment one night after an evening of dancing and partying, to find the woman's roommate collapsed halfway between her bedroom and the restroom, having overdosed on pills.  After giving CPR and calling an ambulance, they found out that She had gotten a letter from very disappointed parents and had spiraled into depression.
Hollywood was, if anything, worse.  Many people on a production, especially women, were literally considered products of a sort, and needed to tow the line to make the production successful.  Ariadne, who had always had more self-confidence than seemed warranted, tried to encourage everyone and even intercede, but her power was limited, even when she had starring roles in small films.  People who couldn't perform as needed, even when that need was unreasonable, were cast aside frequently.
So she was no stranger to having to live up to expectations.

Ariadne reached out and took the other woman's hand, in a sisterly way.   She spoke kindly and softly but firmly.
"I'm no expert in magic, certainly, but I have two things to say.  One, that I've been told that magic is a skill, like any other, like archery, or painting, or cooking.  It needs to be practiced in order to get better.
Two, and again this is just a novice's view, but I'd say that there is no worthless magic, only magic applied incorrectly.  You just need to find clever uses for your magic, in order to make a mark on the world."

She took a small coin, one of the silver ones she got back as change for their drinks.  Releasing the woman's hand, Ariadne took the silver coin in her right hand and started flipping it from knuckle to knuckle, causing it to seemingly dance between her fingers.  Then she took her left hand and put it by her right and snapped her fingers.  The silver coin had vanished!  Then Ari opened her left hand, revealing the coin.
It was a simple sleight of hand, probably obvious to a professional, but perhaps not to the untrained.
"After all.....It's all about presentation."

She remembered, on the set of the movie"Long Live The Queen", her medieval vaguely cheesy bodice ripping movie, meeting the History Consultant Henry McQueen.  Henry, a bit of an medieval fanatic (he had a bad habit of yelling and screaming at everyone whenever he saw a historical error), was befriended by Ariadne, who found his tantrums entertaining.  Over the course of the movie production, he taught her his specialty, medieval magic, including tricks dating back to the Egyptian Pharoahs.

"I'm not-- oh dear! Do you think I'm one of Oberon's children or grandchildren...? Ha! No, my mother could never ever... nor my grandmother, either, she'd be the last person in the world who might... No, I think I'm just... different..." A small sip of wine. "...I admit, it's a pretty tempting fantasy... one we've all had when we were little, mm? A magical princess... Must be nice..." She looks up at Ariadne. "What about you? Did you ever daydream about being a granddaughter of Oberon when you were little...?"

Ariadne smiled as she gathered her thoughts for a convincing lie.  It was an old Improv trick amongst her acting friends.
"Well, to be honest, I had a very good childhood.  My mother dies soon after I was born, but my father was well off, as well as loving, protective and supportive.   So much so that, as a dumb child, I actually resented it a little bit and felt guilty.   So I never really envied anyone.  I made my own adventures, to be honest.
Still, now that I'm learning more about them, I can see where they might be figures of envy.  But remember that with bigger worlds come bigger responsibilities and bigger problems.  "

Marlena giggles slightly. "I know, right? And... I don't know...? Living in a big castle? Riding horses along the beach and... I don't know what. Dancing at balls? That sounds a bit tiring... Maybe it is. Going out and finding your own Shadow to live in, though... that might be nice... Maybe... if Black Road demons didn't come along or something... I wonder what my favorite Shadow would be like...? Maybe I'd just... have a big home by the sea...? Or a small one...? A private chef and nothing to do but swim half the day, and read books the rest of the time...?" Marlena sighs. "What about you, Jasmine? What would your personal dream Shadow be like?"

Jade again wondered if her mask had slipped with Marlena using her real name.

"Oh, let's see." She tilted her head in thought.

"A place that carries the waves of sound well. Since I really love music. I would like it to be near the sea to hear the lapping of the water against the shore. It would have lots of choices of clothing for myself expression. It would have beautiful long nights with the sparkling of stars in the sky. I suppose there would be a bit of those things like riding horses and dances. I would have a handsome man at my side, but I suppose that is more than a shadow thing."

"I know, right? I've been to Minos a lot, on business, but it's like, you're in the city, or you're on a ship. There's no 'relaxing on the beach' in Minos. And you'd have to be pretty super-wealthy to do that in Montevalno. And if you're that wealthy in Montevalno, someone's usually scheming against you. How can I be this young and want to retire already?" Marlena sighs. "Is Tanus nice? I've never actually been there."

Jade:

"Tanus is nice, it is alive with sound and color. The streets are sandy like the desert but filled with vendors and children quick to offer aid as guides or simply to serve. One can find almost anything among the many sellers in the bizarre. Just be careful and quick witted when dealing with them as they try to take as much coin as possible. So walk like a commoner there or expect to pay twice what they would. The people are nice though and if you gain a friend there they will do much to ensure your comfort."

She looks to Ariadne interested in what her perfect shadow would be like, would it be that Earth place?

Now it seems like the monsters are breaking the truce and attacking people again. Everybody here's pretty worried about it-- you don't want things like that happening in the Shadow next door... Marlena seems to lose interest in speculation about Weirmonken and the Amber royal family. "I like you folks. And not just because of the beautiful song... You--or your Tanus bosses--wouldn't ever have any interest in trading in glass? Wool? Pretty dyed fabrics? "Lots of gods. But their gods never actually seem to show up nor do anything, at least not in modern times-- they're apparently not like Amber's unicorn-- so they might be just, um, things the Lambethians happen to believe in? When they say that something is the will of such-and-such god or goddess, you just nod at them and they seem happy enough with you. I'm pretty sure some of them know we're just humoring them, but most of them seem all right with that. Lots of shrines and temples and things, though. And they're good customers-- pretty thriving economy."

"Yes, we can depart and talk outside. Your ears are quite keen Marlena."

"Comes of being from Montevalno. Being able to eavesdrop is a survival skill." Marlena tosses a fair share of money on the table.

Tazik pays for the incognito royal cousins, since he's got local money on him. (Marlena notes that, too, but doesn't seem to think much of it.)

Everyone heads outside...

Marlena thinks. "...Dangerous?" she asks quietly.

Jade:
"Have you been to Weirmonken?"

"No, I've never been," says Marlena, even more quietly. "I wanted to, but by the time I had the opportunity, their new troubles had started up, and so I didn't go after all. 'Cause, y'know... werewolves."

Ariadne:
Ariadne put the pieces together, nodding
"Yes, Sorry, Merlena.  We don't usually give our real names in public, just to keep better security"

Marlena nods slowly, thinking. "...Are you folk huntin' werewolves?" she whispers.

We shared some drinks and had a good time, no need to mar our good names in this pleasant place. After all, Marlena has her own reasons to be here. No need to keep her from her own reasons for being here."

For a moment Jade agreed with John that she seemed like she wanted to be brought along. Then she saw the fear on Marlena's face and remembered her run in with those Gray men. These Werewolves were easily as dangerous.

"Right, right... and I'm leaving soon... headed east, I mean... Um... could I do anything for you...? Start a rumor, maybe? Heaven knows I've had enough training in that... Rumors are like bread in Montevalno-- in that you have them every day and they're both more and less filling than you expect. Did that make sense? I'm not sure that made sense. But um say I could start a rumor that you got urgent news and went back where you came from? Or that you're super dangerous and people had better not mess with you? Or that... I don't know, anything you want people to think or not think about you...?"

Re: THE ROAD TO WEIRMONKEN (with probable bunny drop-off first)

Ariadne went to the rooms assigned to her.  She looked around the place, both because she was fascinated by a bedroom that was literally on another planet, and because she was a bit paranoid about being spied on.
The former reason was still very powerful, though.  She'd slept on what was technically four different planets so far.  Or were they?  Were there other lands on the same planet as Amber?  It would make sense, as the city and surrounding forests and ocean couldn't be THAT big, right?

She chuckled and shook her head.  She still had so much to learn, and it was a bit much to take in all at once.

Eventually, Ari settled in and went to sleep, keeping her battle axe by the bed and a hand axe under her pillow.
She smirked, realizing that she wasn't this paranoid about intruders when she was living in Los Angeles.
