It is with sadness we have to report the passing of Monsieur Martin Mersenne. He was the son of the late Théo Mersenne, a well known merchant in Le Havre, Normandy. M. Mersenne died of smallpox. Rumours have it there are others among the societé with this terrible disease.
After an argument last month, Ms. Alexandre Duclos and Bastien Durand met to settle the matter. M. Duclos brought M. Henri Sampson along as second. M. Duclos was armed with a rapier, M. Durand with a cutlass. M. Durand immediately took the initiative. His attack came close but M. Duclos was able to avoid the cutlass and counter attack. M. Durand was unprepared for defence and took a hit. At this point the duelists agreed to end the contest, with M. Duclos as the winner.
There are several reports of members of the societé being seen at the Pont Au Changes, among them Ms. Alonso Balmaske and Beau Geste.
M. Balmaske then purchased the rank of Subaltern in the 4th Languedoc Arquebusiers, while. M. Geste was seen buying three horses and hiring a groom. They were both noted for their conspicuous consumption this month.
With his arm in a bandage M. Durand left Scudery's salon and instead applied for membership in Scarron's. M. Geste joined Scudery's. Major Armand Lebeau left Scudery's shortly before volunteering his squadron for the front and leaving Paris for the front in Provence.
Week 1
Ms. Balmaske, Durand, and Henri Sampson were on regimental duty.
Week 2
Ms. Durand and Sampson were still on regimental duty.
M. Balmaske attended services at the Cathedral de Notre-Dame where he made a large donation.
M Geste was seen visiting Scudery's in the company of his new paramour, the influential mademoiselle Andrée Grosjean.
Week 3
This week M. Geste threw a party at Scudery's. Among the guests we noted his paramour Mlle Grosjean and Ms. Balmaske and Sampson. M. Geste was seen at the gambling table.
M. Durand chose to spend his time in the barracks practicing his cutlass.
Week 4
From the Rue Bourdel we have heard about Ms. Balmaske, Durand, and Sampson this week. M. Balmaske was seen at the gambling table.
M. Geste joined the 27th Aquitaine Musketeers, purchasing the rank of Major.
Despatches From The Front
Major Lebeau has been mentioned in despatches from the front. He led his squadron in an impressive assault on the Spanish enemy in the Valtellina valley in Lombardia.
