[OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

Logical Renee will have a post IC to be made... I need to drop these thoughts here.

From what I'm gathering we're basically being asked to bring in a 'foreign' power to garrison within our realm from a defensible location that isn't beholden to anyone, but can enforce 'laws' that may or may not be the local laws (Because they aren't answerable to anyone so what would force this?), has zero obligation to actually defend the realm (But might somehow deter other foreign powers from attacking). Did we mention the mere ask is implying the new government is starting out so thoroughly corrupt to require an outside government to police our nation? (Because our Paladin/Noble and anyone we appoint is corrupted by the power and cannot possibly establish a lawful government capable of limiting bad influences... To be protected by a foreign power that is based upon lawful evil precepts...) Everything you might dislike about the police, triple that, and add no recourse for any miscarriage of justice - there is no court of law, lawsuits, or grievance process. They become the Spanish Inquisition, beholden to their own leaders and pursuing whatever cause they want. Speak out, you disappear in Gestapo style.

Sorry, but the idea is ludicrous to me. It begs the question, why are we bothering establishing any kingdom if we are not actually ruling/leading anything? We're abdicating all law enforcement to an outside entity that gets to decide what it chooses to enforce and doesn't answer to ANYONE in the actual kingdom. Might as well declare ourselves a Theocracy and be done with it, give the leadership role to the Hellknights or become a colony of Cheliax.

I agree with Erlin on this fact, Ursion is a good guy, but this idea is illogical in every sense of the word and we don't have much good reputation for the rest of the orders (Hellknights - knights of Hell, an infernal plane of inherent EVIL, and let's not forget the contract lawyer Asmodeus, aka the Lord of Lies, known for manipulative contracts to his own advantage).

Also, realistically, by the time they build the structure (Years, not months, but years! Unless Ursion is proposing we pay magic users to expedite the process. He'll need an architect, engineers, craftsmen, and laborers) there is no promise anyone shows up any time soon. And by the time there is a garrison, we will have firmly established the kingdom, have a militia, basic laws, and at least one growing city/trade center/capital.

Anyways, the "Hellknights" have zero skin in the game. Period. A single knight is not representative of supporting our cause. Our group has bled, suffered huge losses, and is handling all the hard work. I cannot see any one of us going, great we did the work, get the titles, and then hand off the kingdom we bled to build to an outside organization that can easily choose to turn on us.

I'm sorry, but the idea of a virtuous evil order that never ever becomes corrupt is insane. Evil is self-serving, and if there are no checks on their power, they will become corrupt. And if anyone argues this is impossible, then why can our "good" guys become corrupt?

I understand the original purpose was to thwart "naughty corrupt" nobles in another kingdom because laws were not enforced. But if we follow the logical conclusion, the enforcers become the dictators and true power eventually.

I applaud the character wanting to establish a chapter house like a good hellknight, but from a logical game stance, this should be a slap in the face for everyone else.

If this should be the course of action, I cannot see Renee sticking around. She'd find another safe haven. She's already a walking traumatized scar of bad nations that tolerates evil and inhumane behavior. She's sane and logical enough to not stick around for more bad behavior.

On a side note, I'm surprised nobody has realized just how badly traumatized Renee is to exude her emotionless deadpan persona. Considering her species is highly emotional and very curious.

[OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

Ursion's argument it that we do it because it's effective.

Consider real world Knightly Orders that thrived for hundreds of years on the boundaries of the Christian world.

The King of England could not command a contingent of Knights Templar to go collect taxes for him in Scotland, but he obviously had a lot of influence and could work with the Orders Grand Master to conduct operations in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Why did Monarchs tolerate and contribute to these Orders? There were many reasons, some of them cultural or religious, but it was also because they attracted professional veteran warriors, and they were self sufficient.

In the terms of Golarion, the Stolen Lands and the River Kingdoms are a backwater. The party has a representative of a very large, very well organized military order in their ranks already.

Instead of starting from scratch with a handful of local adventurers and Johnny Hayseed the volunteer (or conscript), they can bring in world class professional help from the outside.

As Ursion already pointed out...they are not an arm of the Cheliax government. They are an independent military order. There is also no reason for them to be the sole military or law enforcement branch in the Kingdom. They can supplement.

Original Renee was strongly Lawful Neutral, so is Ursion, they really like structure. They really like careful examination and rules. The Hellknights are pretty much as Lawful as one gets in Golarion.

Some are evil, yes,..But there are also Lawful Good Hellknights...it's the "lawful" that matters in both cases.

I would think they would be on the same team in this, especially as he has been the only one to delve into her more personal thoughts and experiences.

[OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

Perhaps we're thinking too big; if Ursion were to establish, say, a small chapterhouse with a pallisade, and a barraks for about 20 Hellknight trainees, with himself as their leader, as a small supplement to the country's indigenous forces, that would be doable.  But even that is going to take some time, effort, and money to create, and we have to establish trade, and things to actually trade, before we can begin building anything.

That's a great point Erlin.

This scene was partially because I wanted to get in some RP before we rinse and repeat with another combat.

But this is all way down the line stuff. Starting small, like you say, would be a perfectly acceptable solution in Ursion's eyes.

[OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

In reply to Ursion Korvonan (msg # 18):

Renee is quite Lawful Neutral. We are bringing order to a very chaotic realm.

My point is we are asking for this lawful group to come in and be above the authority of the lawful government we decide to put into place. At that point, we are just typical murder hobos clearing a dungeon for some other entity to take over. I don't want to set up a puppet government.

If the idea was presented as "I want to bring in a chapter house to have more military might to make others think twice about invading, but they won't interfere in our affairs" that would be more palatable to me.

But here, let me quote this:

quote:
The Hellknights are a collection of knightly orders with a unique focus on the promulgation of law. They are interested less in the social goodness and charity typical of paladins, but rather in the foundation and stringent maintenance of order at all costs. In their iron-handed exaction of law—specifically, the laws of their various orders and their home country of Cheliax—Hellknights emulate the organized and effective armies of Hell. They are not concerned with morality or methods, only results. If people cannot be trusted to obey the law out of their own senses of civility and social righteousness, Hellknights provide the need to obey out of fear of a master's stern hand.

Hellknights are taught to replace emotion with steely discipline and are not interested in methods: only the end results matter.

You can call it a lawful organization, but quite frankly, the wording there makes the organization actually rooted in evil. If the means justify the end, then anything is permissible. Lawful Neutral would focus on enforcing the letter of the law in an evenhanded manner. Lawful Good would focus on enforcing the spirit of the law through the lens of goodness, with circumstances taken into consideration.

Everyone likes to focus on the Golarion wording and what has happened, but let me throw out this logical conclusion based upon the exact wording we have. If Lady Lebeda's death would remove the chance for civil unrest and chaos due to war and a peaceful transition to the enemy leader, then the Hellknights would do that by their own charter.

That all said, those are my opinions. Renee is separate from me, but as much as she is for order, she will have reservations about taking their lawful authority and delegating it to someone else without any chance to take it back. A government should be orderly, should be able to make corrections, and enforcing laws is a big factor in showing that laws matter.

[OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

The description in the write up is accurate, and I would hope that Ursion's portrayal has been consistent with that world view.

The Order of the Scourge in particular is concerned about the just and even creation and application of the Law, which complements your views of Law Neutral.

But it does not have to be all or nothing. You have an aspiring Hellknight in your ranks, he is going to want to do Hellknight stuff, and he is entitled to an equal share of the reward.

So do you want to compromise with him? Or shut it down completely? These are both viable paths to go down, and he will react appropriately. The game will not stop in its tracks either way, Ursion will just adapt and continue to further his own motivations and goals.

Perhaps even leading to interesting events in the future, if we get that far.

It's all part of the story. But which path will they take?

[OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

You'll see that Renee is not completely opposed to the idea, she just doesn't want an autonomous organization enforcing laws within a kingdom without the consent or authority granted to them (And the ability to take back that authority if necessary). Renee is a survivor of a 'no morality kingdom', so she has some baggage and issues she has to process.

I am interested to see where the RP actually takes the game. I personally have never played Kingmaker (Or much of Pathfinder itself), so I'm learning as we go along. I don't want to stifle your character goals either.

For character development, I'd love to get Renee to peek out of her shell more. But I think that will require something of a push. Whether Erlin, Ursion, or one of the others wants to partake of the building/drama there remains to be seen.

Oh I would definitely like to continue the deeper interaction between Renee and Ursion, and I think her partial opposition will certainly be a facet of that.

Hopefully some more opportunities will present themselves.

As for stifling goals, I feel that as Urion is the more "difficult" concept, it would be incumbent upon me as his Player to acquiesce should his goals become too fractious for the group, or if they start demanding too much time.

Sort of the bargain I made with myself, and to some part the GM, when I pitched it.

Very good.

I'm still getting a feel for Renee but deep down, I think she realizes she's lacking intimate connections with people (Hence the small gestures towards Ursion). But a barrier is she never had a proper father figure (She was an asset and experiment), and her mother, yeah, that is a brutal past there of a lot of hurt! She has no true connection to her gender, her species as a whole, and her coping mechanism that served her well to survive those circumstances, is actually a block to forming any sort of healthy relationships with others.

She has to have a catalyst to break down and let all that bottled emotional hurt out. But I'm not exactly sure what that will look like. Or she continues on, and something else develops. I guess that's the fun of RP, uncertainty!

"Yes, Twin Axes first." She said as she chuckled at Erlin. "And no they are not the same."

She then looked towards Svetlana a moment, considering. "Do you have something that might help us sway their leader to a more peaceful leaning? I would hate to have to fight someone with close ties to you, if we can end it peacefully, somehow, that would be ideal." She asked softly, hoping the other woman had something, anything that could help with that endeavor.

Re: [OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

Okay, I'm just gonna share this:

Burning Hands * - Renee's trademark
Crafters Fortune - The target is struck by inspiration and gains a +5 luck bonus on its next Craft skill check. (Haven't seen much on the crafting front, is this being used at all?)
Identify (Cause knowing is half the battle!)
Mage Armor * - How she's not dead (2 hours!)
Monkey Fish - Uh, why did she choose this? Your hands and feet alter to make you better at climbing and swimming. You gain a 10-foot climb speed and swim speed.
Shield (More AC)
Summon Monster 1 (Summon fluffy to attack!)

Spell: Windy Escape (Me only, harder to kill for 1 round!)
Spell: Enlarge Person - Increased weapon damage by 1 step and reach, but minimal advantages. (Honestly, it's like they nerfed the rules to neuter this spell, Medium to large is +8 Strength, +4 Constitution, -2 Dexterity, and usually a natural armor increase). The variant version put out by Distant Horizons Games captured this effect to actually be useful.

2d6 to 2d8 - you get maybe 2 more points of damage on average. You to hit bonus is a wash - +1 Str -1 Size. Unless you have combat reflexes, the extended reach of 10' isn't going to do more that grant you own AoO when a creature closes for melee.

I'm sure there was a valid reason, but some of the spells don't sound very handy considering Renee's purpose... Why increase your movement for Swim and Climb, unless that is going to grant the +8 bonus for those skills, otherwise a -1 to both skill checks is an automatic "Nope, no way, not gonna do that!"

Direct Attack - Burning Hands
Indirect Attacks or actions - Summon Monster I
Defense: Mage Armor & Shield

Utility: The rest with various circumstantial uses...

I mean, I don't play wizards often, but relying on one spell for offense is a recipe for trouble.

Erlin - Summon Monster is the best Renee has, but due to a duration of 2 rounds, and has to be within 30' of Renee, probably not going to be useful.

I'm gonna be honest, Enlarge Person doesn't have as much use as I'd like. Any recommendations for the group collective?

Well I would trade Monkey Fish out for grease, great battlefield control, and would work great for handling a lot of mooks coming our way.

I would also take snowball or magic missile instead of enlarge.

Perhaps expeditious retreat would be good as well.

I like what Ursion said.  I act the scout and tun off stealth isnt needed.  Falco could be hidden as he is more stealthy than I, I believe, and him and I make the ambush/lead to traps.

The rest, Radgonda, Ursion, Renee, and Erlin see about attacking anything left.  Though if there are too many left for the 4 of you, you wait in my opinion and let Falco do the scout and I the ambush next.

You all should be watching though in the case way too many follow after us.

Re: [OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

Question: How will Falco and Tosk know that the rest of the party is in position? It is going to take them several hours to circle around.

To paint the picture you're in the middle of pretty thick woods and are pretty much forced to follow game trails which is where the bandits have laid their traps.

If the other party circles around it is going to take them miles and hours of travel and in the end neither side will be able to see the other for coordination. You can put Tosk and Falco on a timer and hope that the other party isn't delayed otherwise you will need some way to send the go-ahead.

Re: [OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

I drew a crude map because I think I don't completely understand:

The bandit camp in the middle, the line north is the trail w/ traps.

Is the idea that you split the party between A and B so you lure then into the traps and then to the side and the rest of the party is right there in a pincer?

OR is the idea that you split the party between like A and D so that while all the bandits are charging at Tosk and Falco the rest of you enter an empty or near empty camp?

OR is the idea that you expect the bandits will only send out a small party to attack Falco and Tosk, so it's like 1/3rd leave and 2/3rds remain behind?

The question is because if you split the party between A and B then you'll be on the same battlemap maybe a few hundred feet apart.

If you're splitting between A and C/D/E you'll probably end up on two different battlemaps because of the distances involved.

Re: [OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

You make it sound as if this camp is the size of a small town. Hell you can walk accross Chicago in several hours.

I spent most of my military career in the Infantry, and we spent a lot of time in the woods. Unless this camp is the size of Fort Wayne, IN of some other similarly sized small city there is no reason it should take several hours and miles to get around. A company sized Infantry element with vehicles and supplies covers a foot ball field sized area, 2 at most. The bandit camp has less people in it than a company sized infantry unit, so the camp should be no bigger than a football field. The miles and hours of travel makes no sense period. At most I'd realistically say an hour to avoid their traps. They would likely set traps for enemies near the camp, and for food and game further out.

That being said, it should take us no more than an hour to get the other three party members from A/B to D. During that time Tosk/Falco could be switching the trap markers around in the A/B area.

There is also no reason for two battle maps, a football field is only 60 hexes. There is no reason that camp should be any bigger than that. If it is, we do not need to be attacking it with only 5 people, we need to come back with a damn army. LOL!

Re: [OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

Those are some fair points. Let me explain a bit further:

1) Travel Time: I'm assuming that you're going far enough away that doesn't require stealth checks and as mentioned this is not nearly as easy to traverse as an open city. You're either having to forge new trails or backtrack quite a ways to find other trails.

Based on my own thoughts (you can walk about 4mph vs. hike 2mph) I'm assuming you move at about half speed. I may have forgotten about the horses but let me show my math so we can get on the same page:

50ft speed = 100ft a round = ~16 2/3 feet/sec = 11 miles per hour

Halving that = 6 miles per hour.

Perception DC is +1/10 ft. To pretty much guarantee absolutely no chance of being spotted or heard let's say 500 ft buffer around the ~100ft camp which gives us a radius of 550ft. This gives us a total circumference of 3,455.75ft (0.654498mi) and half that means you're walking 0.325 miles but I will round that up to 0.5 miles because even at hiking speed you're going to have to backtrack or slow down even further as you're not following trails.

So a 0.5 mile ride at 6 miles per hour = 5 minutes.

Even if I double or triple the distances or penalties to movements we're still looking at < 15 minutes to get into position.

Point to Radgonda.

2) Separate battle maps: The map I have is 100ft x 150ft so the question becomes how many traps are you intending for them to hit or how far are you planning on luring them north? If you're only luring them about 50' North that would mean they're only going to hit 1-2 traps.

I guess I was thinking that this would be a much longer "lure north" and makes me happy I'm asking these questions now instead of getting everything setup wrong.

Yes there are markers. From the direction of the bandit camp there are stones placed that indicate a trap about 20ft ahead of it so that coming towards the bandit camp there are no warning markers but coming from the camp out you can see them and move around them. You can just move those stones to the side and hope they don't remember where they dug them. It has only been a couple of days so they'll get a Will check to remember.

Erlin, with her longbow notched and ready, and half her face painted in blue woad, positioned herself south of the camp approximately 20 feet away - close enough to shoot, but also charge in to assist Tosk and Falco, if she had to.  Her intentions were to stay behind a tree and fire at the bandits until her arrows ran out, and sing, but she knew she might not be given the luxury of ranged battle, depending on how things turned out.  She still felt as though her group were at a disadvantage in this fight, but she went along anyway, ready to help as best she could.

She snuck up quietly and put herself behind a tree, with as clear a sight into the camp and the bandits as she could.

Re: [OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

Well, our opinions are nice, but ultimately it’s Ragonda’s player who gets to decide. There are easily hundreds of better portraits that can be used. Those choices are flavored by my preferences and biases based upon the one portrait from RPOL. Alas, that leaves little indication onto the bias and preferred appearance the player has. The player might have a completely different photo.

But I am glad everyone enjoys the selections.

We might as well pick one for Falco too, if we can get a third player to take him over.

Looking forward to getting back into the rythm of combat. Once our DM adjusts Ursion's AC he might come away less injured that he was. Although I am not sure.

There are several good images there to be honest. :) Pretty hard to decide between them all and the few I've found myself. lol

As to Falco missing, I've noticed that myself. Maybe it might be time since that is one of the characters we seem to cycle players through like candies, we she consider a new character altogether?

@Ursion: AC corrected. That saves you 4 hp

@Falco: I think it is time to just boil the game down a player. I have no real incentive to bring a new player in only to roll the dice with them and possibly have them leave as well. I am very happy to run the game with 5 or even 4 players.

Re: [OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

Considering the "ideal" party size was meant to be four PCs, I don't think letting Falco go is necessarily a bad thing. Though, decreased party size increases potential for lethal encounters. We're all squishy still and one critical hit or a couple of good hits away from dropping or dying. That extra body can make all the difference.

@Ragonda - You can use 3-8 pictures, whatever makes you happy. Just choose one for your token and I'll update the Token for our GM to use in Maptools. :)

Re: [OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

Blanket general statement. My real life has gotten very busy these past two weeks. Work stuff, some people were let go and I'm picking up their slack. I think it is dying down as this week looks pretty calm and in general until mid-July things should drop back to normal.

I am still here. I am still dedicated to play. My free time ebbs and flows and this is an ebb time. I will update when I can but try to have some patience with me this month.

Re: [OOC] The Taverning 2: Electric Bugaloo

It is with a very heavy heart that I must announce the closure of this game. When I started it I had plenty of time but my work has shifted and it shows no signs of letting up. I just do not have the time, and more importantly, the energy to maintain this large number of games so I am forced to consolidate.

I enjoyed running this game and I am very sad to see it shut down prematurely. You are fantastic writers and while we did not get to develop things too far this group had fantastic chemistry and I am really, really sorry to see it come to an end.

It sucks, it really does but I have to be honest. It is a disservice to continue limping along with a few posts here and there. You deserve a better game than that and unfortunately I am no longer in a position to provide that for you.

Best of luck with your other projects, and maybe we will see each other down the road.

As for our other players, it has been a pleasure. I would be up for continuing if we could find another DM, but I know that's an unlikely prospect.

Hit me up on Discord: LegacyKing#4957 and we can hook you into other games with excellent writers/players.

I tend to do the classless and 3.5e. But I let people pull in pathfinder characters.
