RTJ: Where am I? What is an "Isekai" or "Soul-Like"?
Hello, Dear Reader!
This is a game inspired by the "Isekai" genre of light novels. "Isekai" novels, or 'portal fantasy', feature a regular modern person being transported to a fantasy videogame universe via reincarnation after death or other mishap, typically as a summoned hero or demon lord. In Theogenesis: Godhunter, you play an ordinary human (ideally, yourself or some fictive version thereof) abruptly transported to a 'science fiction' universe where advanced magical research has produced space-faring humanoid vessels of war called "XOs", short for Exoskeletons.
Typical of the ""Isekai" genre, you advance by gaining experience and acquiring unique skills through frequent use, hardship, and outright theft. Skills evolve into stronger versions when they reach the maximum level, and you have the option of evolving into a higher monster species or human class yourself when you reach the correct experience level threshold.
This game inherits thematic and setting DNA from the "Souls" games by From Software, such as "Demon's Souls", "Dark Souls", and "Elden Ring". You are a lowly Godling, reborn into a world fractured by war and corruption, battling monstrous beings in massive ruins built by giants. The worlds are ruled by suffering Gods and populated by desperate remains of their armies; death itself withheld even from the penitent.
Theogenesis: Godhunter is focused on combat, invention, and exploration in that order. Most of the game, you will be hunting down and slaying powerful beings in order to advance your own ambitions and acquire the materials and abilities you need to upgrade equipment.
History of Theogenesis
Gods were the products of pockets dimensions (Realms) produced by universes (World Trees) that sprouted spontaneously within the primordial Void. The process whereby a World Tree germinated a Realm Seed, which then produced a pocket dimension governed by a superpowered being, is referred to as "Theogenesis". A typical Theogenesis game begins with awakening in a realm of your own devising, introducing yourself to your people, exploring and securing your realm, and then getting involved in grand politics with the other Gods (players) and the world at large.
So what is Godhunter about?
In Godhunter, you were a normal human being suddenly transported to a dark science fantasy game world that has become fully real for you. You recall your human life on Earth, but find yourself within a strange mansion called the Lost House, populated by other Godlings with similar ambitions centered around slaughtering Gods for power and profit.
Your primary tool in hunting down the Gods are magical suits of armor, called XOs, that enhance your abilities and protect you in inhospitable environments.
History of the XO
Whether fighting within a Realm or within the Void, your survival depends on the capabilities of your XO. The first XO was a suit of ultra rare living plate armor, called the Horunculi, that fed on droves of mortal souls to power itself. This meant that only particularly 'wealthy' beings that owned a plentitude of slaves willing to die to feed their master's pet armor could own one. The Void can only be traversed by living beings - it is inherently empty of nonliving matter - so living armor was necessary to serve as a barrier between the hungry Void and the enterprising Voidfarer.
An ancient species of sentient spider-folk called the Systemarchs discovered that the same Runes used by the Gods to create powerful monsters as tools of war from inert clay could instead be used to modify the Horunculi to take on new shapes and abilities. By harvesting the Realm Seeds from the pocket dimensions of dead gods, a dependable and long-lasting power source was developed that obsoleted the need for a constant influx of mortal sacrifices.
After the first and greatest World Tree, Yggdrasil, collapsed under the weight of its own grandeur, the surviving Gods fled through the Void using these specially crafted XOs to travel to other World Trees. Many Gods were devoured by the foul and ancient Old Ones and other unbeings that waited in the dark between dimensions, the Realm Seeds that powered their XOs drawing these terrible predators to their victims.
Since then, the Horunculi model has been abandoned completely, and modern XOs are produced using new Runes that naturalize the XO to the Void - providing not only resistance to entropy, but also camouflage and the ability to carry advanced weapons systems.
Unfortunately for you, the Lost House is a relic from before such advancements. The House's arsenal duly shines with tarnished gold Horunculi armor . . .
