NEW RTJ START HERE

This thread is for replacements picked up in Central America, and, as such, lists a VERY limited set of options.

Note: All character must have proficiency in Vehicles (Water) through Feat or Background. As the game is 8th level, this shouldn't be a problem. Ghosts of Saltmarsh has some backgrounds that may help. Actual ship experience isn't necessary. Canoe/kayak experience is fine. it's all the same skill.

The Aztec society is the local "Evil Empire" and, as such, has some limits for characters: You can be Aztec, just not part of the local power structure.

Humans:
Any "Civilized" character will be an Aztec, although "Civilization" does NOT mean Technology. You'll be limited in weapons and armor choices to start.

Non Humans: None available.

Classes

The class options are narrow and may vary by race:

Barbarian:
Unaailable: the ship has gotten too far south for northern folk to get to.

Bard:
Unavailable. There just isn't a bardic tradition, as far as I know.

Cleric:
Unavailable. But see Warlock.
All the remaining Aztec Gods (Quetzalcoatl is dead) are evil and like those human sacrifices

Druids:
Northerners or westerners. Land, mostly, but Shepherd is possible.

Fighters:
Champions are common with the Northerners and Westerners, but Aztecs are more prone to Battlemasters.

Monk:
Paladin:

None. Monks are East Asian, and paladins work for kinder gods, mostly.

Ranger:
Aztecs don't have many rangers (Although Beastmasters isn't unheard of), but the barbarians can go most subclasses

Rogue:
Barbarians have scouts. Aztecs have thief and Assassin.

Sorcerer:
Humans use Wildmagic.

Warlock:
The couatl to the south empower Divine Patron Warlocks and Rangers.
Aztec Engineers follow Great Old Ones, much like the Eqyptians. Note the presence of pyramids in both lands.
There are no other Warlocks present. No fey, no Fiends willing to go against the local Gods., no Genies, etc.

Wizard:
Aztecs and the Resistance both have a few self taught Wizards about, but no schools or Universities to teach Wizardry. It is a new discipline in the area.

Backgrounds

Backgrounds can vary widely by class/race choice, but will likely be narrow for a given class/race combo, given the local circumstances

Some notes, however:

Aztecs are at least semi civilized, and, as such, probably have access to most backgrounds. However, you're not likely to have religious backgrounds (such as Acolyte) as the Clerics are the bad guys, and not open to players. Noble is unlikely, too.

Aztecs in the Couatl Resistance may take Faction Agent as well. See below.

Final prep and House conventions: Combat

Folks, combat is 6 second rounds without discussion time or advanced looks at what someone is ABOUT to do. A couple games back the mta gaimg in combat was driving me nuts, so I've instituted a prevention:

Combat will take place in private threads and the IC threads will be off limits during combat. Post:
Initiative (first round)
Action
Bonus Action
Planned Reaction

Feel free to set up conditional actions. If you have more than one possible Reaction, set up conditions for deciding which one. After the next round has started is too late to post a reaction. It needs to be done now, as it may well affect the next person in initiative order.

Include all rolls for attack and damage and most skills you might be trying to use. Be aware, most skills will REPLACE you attack action, including ACTIVE uses of Knowledge skill.

Anything you want to say goes here too. I'll either post the gist of it, if I feel folks are too busy to pay you attention, or the while thing  It will vary by circumstance.

I'll post the results to IC and we will start again.

Final prep and House conventions: General

You'll each have a Private thread. Good for combat, questions, private knowledge results that others wouldn't have, etc.

Post Speech in Blue (and use quote, please), OOC in orange. DO NOT use red or green (either shade of either). Those are for me.

I will roll all roll where the results are not immediately obvious or where the knowledge of the die roll could affect your interpretation of the result. Mostly this is meant for Knowledge rolls, of course. And, all too frequently, what I get sent are the wrong skills, anyhow.

Those of you with training in a Knowledge Skill get the benefit of Passive knowledge> this is generally done mechanically by using the Language group system. Knowledge skills in the language system are for me, only, to use. It is NOT a secret whisper system. Use exotic languages for that, and make them public. Assuming you know the langauge, of course, That listing should be up to date.

Final prep: The ship

The "New Markets" is riverboat pressed into service for an exploration of a newly discovered land, and crewed by specialists that should be up to the task of getting it though very rough waters.

But The NM is overloaded, over crewed, and lacking in rowboats or other ways of getting to shore (which is why ports have docks, of course). It CAN, however, navigate up some rivers.

The current party has elected to keep the Cook(Nazem), who's player has departed, as an NPC. He's been modified to Sidekick, and kept all important abilities. These lets everyone hit the beach for exploring, foraging, etc without leaving the ship undefended. Or someone on board missing out on the action.

The Resistance/Couatl

Information about the Couatl and their resistance is undiscovered, as yet, and I don't want to put too much here for my players to find, so if you're interested ask me about it in your RTJ.

However:
Quetzalcoatl is dead. his Celestial servants, the Couatl are still serving him, as noted in the MM. Part of their job is the making of priests and paladins. They can't do Clerics, so they do Warlocks. Bade pact Warlocks replace Paladins.

There ARE requirements for Resistance Warlocks, Rangers and Wizards. Ask me about them if ou think you might be interested.

The Resistance IS considered a Faction, and can give the Faction Agent background.
Skill options for Background Choices: Religion, Animal Handling, Perception
Languages taught are Draconic and Celestial.
