I've added you all to the cast so far... Might I suggest that you discuss, here, what you're gonna do? Maybe bouncing ideas off each other might help...?

EDIT: Jon, are you gonna stick with Death? Or do something else? ...Ariadne might give Death a try, if you don't want it...

OOC THREAD for game: PANTHEON

:) Welcome Xan!

One of the ideas that I had, was that there was no real after life, but a font of life that the energy of all things returns to and is then recycled.
When a sentient being dies, instead the soul is cleansed the soul of it previous life and the good or evil that it did; then returned to the font of life for it to be recycled.

This plans into my original idea for the God of Death, which I am working on.

What do you all think?

OOC THREAD for game: PANTHEON

I think the awakening of the universe and the conceptualization of the gods would be a good place to start :)
I will give us all a chance to start to figure out our characters.

Ideas:
From the void, the chaos cooled and order followed and the Font of Life formed and with it, Death. For all things that begin must also have an end to maintain the balance of chaos and order, lest all be erased.

I'm still musing on, well, a lot for our Sky deity. I know I want them to specifically lean less toward being a 'Sun deity' and more a proper Sky deity, lightning bolts, tempests, flying creatures, gentle breezes (if you're good) etc. Maybe Sky Deity will be a triple-faced deity, where they're all technically the same but only one aspect can ever be 'present' (at least in, uh, god-space) at one time. What do y'all think?

Answer:

--When other deities see you (or when non-deities draw a picture of you), what do you look like? (You can have more than one answer, but probably shouldn't have more than three, at least for now.)

In an empty, timeless void, there is potential... and power. The power may or may not prove to be a bit hard to control... but it exists, nonetheless.

AnBas, Lyric, and Xan exist in the timeless void...

(Remember: do NOT say "I do this." Say "I ATTEMPT to do so-and-so," and then tell me what you rolled, and I'll narrate what actually happens.

Unless of course you do something that doesn't require a roll, in which case go right ahead.)

Re: OOC THREAD for game: PANTHEON

I have updated my description with two pics that represent AnBas.

Idea for the starting point (from earlier):
From the void, the chaos cooled and order followed and the Font of Life formed and to balance that, Death was created. For all things that begin must also have an end to maintain the balance of chaos and order, lest all be erased.  From the formless energy of the Font of Life and explosion of creation expanded and too did the shadow of death.  Slowly over time, the seemingly boundless power of Life and its opposite Death, developed into a cycle of birth, Youth, Maturation and Death.  over and over this cycle repeated and slowly, concepts and being began to emerge....

[Insert the origin of the Gods....]
The Gods were born and the Pantheon begins...

Death always existed with life, over the cycles of balance as new concepts and beings were born, so to did Death evolve and the over time, took the name AnBas, God of Death.  For a long time he was alone, in the shadows, maintaining the Balance.  Even when beings began to form, many were afraid of him and their end.  Some rare few saw him and his true self.

----------------------
It is just a hook, plot point, etc.  I'm sure that the GM, Jade or Lyric would much be able to take these bones and craft something wonderful

Re: OOC THREAD for game: PANTHEON

Life flowed from the font, a river of beings and creatures some walking, some crawling, some flying, and some swimming. All perfect, all uniform as Order sat by the side of the font. Chaos on the other hand would trick it's opposite into looking into some mayhem it had caused. On one of these times Chaos approached the Font on it's own to see what it's opposite found so interesting. Gazing into the ever flowing life some passing through Chaos and changing them. Mixing the natures of some, spawning all new and different things and giving each a form of individualism. The touch changes a great deal and the father of all animals arrived to grapple with Chaos not knowing what she was doing to it's many creations.
The struggle knocked the two into the font and as life and divine natures mixed Chaos became pregnant and spawned a new goddess. Xan the Goddess of youth.

This so shocked the two beings that they stopped their struggle. It was the discovery that life could come not just from the font but by beings mingling. The God of Animals sought to bring this discovery to the many creatures he embodied. Chaos moved off in confusion and fear as well as hope and happiness. As the act of Gods and Goddesses differs from the acts of mortal beings Xan sprung a protean mass from Chaos. A feeling of kinship was there but the creature not being of pure Chaos nor pure animals it was something new and different.

It was then that Order returned and seeing things demanded of it's opposite to know what she had done. Chaos proudly claimed like the Font she had created life. In anger over what had happened to the perfect orderly creatures that flowed from the Font it touched the mass declaring as it had touched the Font and changed it's creations so he would bring order to hers. The mass changed slower and eventually a little girl developed and took to it's new life with zeal and the exuberance of what she embodied youth.

Uh, no... it's a timeless void. If you want a Font of Life, either

1. Someone's gotta try to CREATE it,

2. or else we're not starting in a timeless void.

Sounds to me like maybe we REALLY want to start:

Okay, since Xan is running with the new setting, I'm officially doing it. There is now a sun and a planet sustaining many kinds of plant and animal life (I have changed my first in-game post to reflect this.

THIS MEANS that it's also time for me to ask a question that being in a timeless void made difficult to ask:

--Where do you live? (If there is an official "home of the gods," you can have a home there, and/or you can instead/also have another home-- on the moon, in the sun, on an island, on the ocean floor, on a mountaintop, in a deep cave, in a castle in the sky, in another world that can only be gotten to by divine power/magic/dying, or practically anything else). What is your home like?

And this one, which is easier for the same reason:

--Are you the child of another deity, or were you born from something else (sea foam? a volcano? a hurricane?), or have you always existed?

AnBas has existed so long as life has existed.

Lyric:
You should do it, GM! And uh, if you want to brainstorm a twin deity for Sky, lemme know over there...

Twin to Lyric, the Sky:

--NIGHT/MOON:
Could work as twin of Sky because Moon/Stars/etc

--ANIMALS: subset: Birds OR All Flying Animals
Could work as twin of Sky because duh

--EARTH:
Could work as twin of Sky because of the Opposing Opposites thing

--KNOWLEDGE/SECRETS:
Could work as twin of Sky because Stars/Astrology/Divination/etc??

What do you think, Lyric?

I feel like 'Animals' is the least likely, so I'd eliminate that one! I kinda like the idea of a proper Opposite for max twin hijinks, so Earth would be ideal - but if you're feeling the pull of Knowledge/Secrets, I think we could work with that too. :)

No no, it'll let me do Earth Things.

Let's see... How about...

Noric, deity of Earth

As far as he knows, Noric has always existed, for as long as the planet itself has. He seems to have just "woken up" one day.

--CREATE: +2
--SMITE: -1
--BLESS/GIVE: +1
--TELL: 0
--DISGUISE SELF: 0

--When other deities see you (or when non-deities draw a picture of you), Noric looks like:
----A tallish, slim-ish male being with slate-gray skin of a stony texture and shining topaz eyes with lava-red pupils. (They smoke when he's mad.)

--Where do you live?
----In a large cave. Noric lives nearest to the mouth that opens into the desert, but if one follows the right tunnels, they can lead other places (there's a cave mouth in a jungle, there's one deep in a forest, etc.)

What do you think?

We have not, to my recollection.

To put another way: Not yet. Do you want there to be one? If so, Noric can try to help Create one somewhere, unless it's gonna be on a floating cloud, in which case that ball's in your court...

Depends. If it's just an illusion, then probably. If they've really changed their form, like Xan, then it would be harder.

Noric had to do it carefully-- whispering to himself in total darkness, unseen, and not consciously heard by the Arys Tal.

I let myself get away with it without rolling because

1. I was still feeling out how this whole interacting-with-mortals thing could work, and

2. There was no "message" as such, no instructions-- he just wanted them to pick up a spoken language.

Well what exactly do you want to do?

If you want to do the exact same thing as Noric-- let them pick up spoken language-- then I will let you do that without rolling. It's only fair, since I did.

Re: OOC THREAD for game: PANTHEON

Well that's a good one, though it reminds me of a sad story I saw once... it wasn't The Twilight Zone nor The Outer Limits nor One Step Beyond nor Thriller, but it was a show LIKE that, in black and white.

Two scientists, a man and a woman, are in charge of a find-- we've found a baby mammoth in the arctic AND MANAGED TO WAKE IT UP FROM BEING FROZEN IN THE ICE LIKE CAPTAIN AMERICA (or Aang, if that's your jam).

(On the show, they covered a real baby elephant in fur and pretended it was a baby mammoth.)

The woman scientist names the baby mammoth Toby (as I recall?) and grows very attached to it.

The man scientist finds this interesting because 1. He's attracted to her but 2. she doesn't like any sort of personal attachments to anything except baby mammoth.

He asks around and finds out that a few years ago she had a little boy but he (and her husband I think) died (car wreck?) and that's why she can't even. (I think "Toby" was the name of either her son or her son's favorite elephant toy?)

Well, after several weeks of trying to get Toby the baby mammoth to get healthy, it nonetheless passes away. Female scientist is devastated but finally lets male scientist into her emotional zone to comfort her. Although we're very sad we couldn't raise Toby into being a grown-up mammoth so that then we could have an awesome grown-up mammoth, maybe we'll find another in the ice one day, and in the meantime these two are clearly gonna get married and so on so happy ending?

But I was like nooooo Toby The Baby Mammoth!

So that is my post about Baby Mammoth Feelings.

WOWWW i found it. "Science Fiction Theatre," a show name that sounds like it was made up by a really unimaginative person, from 1955, episode "Dead Storage" with Virginia Bruce as Doctor Don't-Touch-Me-Please-I-Have-Issues (and who can blame her?)

I was apparently wrong about it being in black and white-- maybe I was watching on a black-and-white tv (every house used to have two tvs, you see-- a big color one and a cheap black-and-white one that you could move from room to room but it needed pliers to change the channel because the knob fell off and wouldn't go back on) and it was so old and cheap I presumed it was really a black and white show?

(Also: will he shoo the mountain giants out? Try to teach them to be his servants (or change them so they make better servants? (What would he want servants to do, anyway?)))

Re: OOC THREAD for game: PANTHEON

I will say that time will pass, and that the following advances and learnings will take place:

Mountain Giants:
--Learn to speak, although they're not very good at it
--Making buildings constructed with stone
--Agriculture

Arys Tal:
--Have Language skills
--Meditation

The Lyr:
--Have Language skills

The Zareb:
--Have Language skills

The Slitherkin:
--Have Language skills
--Making tools of wood and stone
--Making weapons of stone and wood
--Ropemaking
--Tanning//Leatherworking
--Hunting
--Spear-fishing
--Making Fire
--Cooking with Fire
--Raft/canoe/boatmaking

Lyric, choose three more advances for The Lyr:

--Do they learn tool use?
--Do they learn Hunting?
--Do they learn to make fire?
--Do they learn agriculture?
--Do they learn herbalism?
--Do they learn archery?
--Do they learn magic?

Remember, the Lyr also have

quote:
she can give them some very basic music theory and two or three simple tunes to start with, yes

Musical harpycritters!

Ummm, as for further advancements, they're bird things so...

1. Tools...
2. Hunting, I guess? Is this an advancement, really? I suppose I just imagine the Lyr dropping on their prey (fish or otherwise) with their talons, and amn't sure if that falls under this, or this is meant to indicate hunting with weapons.
And third...
3. I want to stick with the music theme. Magic music?

I'm not too sure about these. Indecision.

2. No-- SWOOPING AND GRABBING to fish isn't the same thing as spear-fishing nor fishing with nets nor poles nor whatever. They can have SWOOPING AND GRABBING TO FISH for free.

Hmmmmmm... Look at it as a strategy thing.

BIRDS can soar, look closely, and then swoop and grab.

HUNTERS can do other things, like
--ambush
--chase prey into traps (or ambushes)
--read spoor and other signs to see what's nearby
--chase down wounded prey until it gets tired

etc.

Buuut--

I dunno, I'll have to think about it for a while. My brain just fullstops on it as a development unless it involves tools, 'cause thinking animals have 'strategies' for hunting. The owl swoops from above silently. The hawk waits by the watering hole squirrels like to use. The cuckoo does its jerk cuckoo thing. Agriculture as a development, I get.
