NPCs

Here are a few NPCs your character might not. This will be expanded with more characters once people begin making their characters. Feel free to add your own submissions here.

Hanako Momonaga
Momonaga-sensei is the primary teacher of literature and history in the mixed clan school in the Hito district. She has a fairly childish look to her, being rather short at only 150cms tall and having a rather slim, petite body-- even by the time they are 12, many of her students look more matured than her. She has an extremely cheerful disposition that can quickly be replaced with that of a frightening storm when angered. However she generally wears her emotions quite openly, if not exaggeratedly, to keep the children at ease. There are some rumors that she was once a famous geisha who married a samurai to gain societal status, but surely she wouldn't be allowed to be a school teacher if that were at all true. Perhaps someone simply extrapolated that from discovering she is a talented singer or actress or something. Or maybe there was a geisha who resembled her. But-- for all of the childish act she puts on, she does seem to carry an air of aristocracy to her and seems rather stern about the children engaging in behavior below their status. Besides, she has never mentions having a husband at all despite surely being nearly 30 years old by now.

Hyobe Goro
Goro-sensei is in charge of the physical education of the children. He is in his late 40s and has a large frame. He is known to be gruff and is described by many as being the scariest teacher at the school. But those who know him better know him to be kind and reliable. Always patient, always calm, he is humble and kind despite being a true expert in his craft. Goro used to be a wrestler back in the day, apparently he was even the very best in the Owl Clan during certain years-- well before any of the current students were born. However good he was among his own clan though, he maybe didn't stack up so well against the others which is why he is teaching now instead of retiring wealthy. When he teaches Jiujitsu, he seems to become excited and lively much as he was in his youth.

Ikoma Mitsuaki
The strategy and war is a wily old man. He claims to have advised a hundred generals, which Mei considers credible because he is roughly 500 years old. He is an unbeatable go player, and seems to know everything everyone's going to say before they say it.

Isawa Junzo
Isawa Junzo is one of the rare Phoneix Ishiken. Although they are even more rarely seen outside of their lands. Junzo is getting on in years and so it might simply be that Otosan Uchi is such a large trade hub that there is a good chance that someone could manifest just the right attunement to become an Ishiken within the large populace of the city and it is his job to teach them, at least how to keep such powers under control if little else seems viable. Naturally enough, he lives in the Chisei district.

Someisa Yui
The astrology teacher for the school. An old, quiet woman, soft spoken, with a subtle smile that never seems to leave her face.  She has a habit of whispering corrections, suggestions, and guidance in students ears when examining their work, as if it is a shared secret between the two. Thus she avoids embarrassing students before others.  Her quiet confidence, brings peace.  Without sharing their problems, students feel Someisa Yui knows of their struggles, and knows that they will be just fine.

Reju Tsukitomo
Tsukitomo is a magistrate in the inner city. He hasn't been appointed to his station long and is quite young, certainly no older than 25. He tends to dress a bit sloppily, though that is hardly unusual for the Owl Clan, and has some odd mannerisms. However, he genuinely seems friendly-- if not occasionally a bit foolish. Despite his odd behaviors, rumors say that he has solved, or at least been part in solving, some extremely difficult cases-- suggesting he does have a rather keen eye and mind to work as an investigator. As a new magistrate, he frequently stops by the school or patrols the main path leading to the school when the children are heading to school or headed home. He has probably been assigned to make certain nothing bad befalls the children of the city. It can be surmised that he sleeps in the hours the children are at school as he investigates most of his cases late at night. The very name he chose for himself was "friend of the moon" suggesting his primarily nocturnal habits.

Auntie Shoko
The woman called Auntie Shoko is a town gossip, but one who dotes on the children of the town and is always happy to have them over for tea. She was once a member of the Scorpion clan, but she apparently married into the Seppun family only for her husband to die before they could have any children. It has been years since then and she must surely by nearly 50 years old by now-- too late for anything like that to happen. It is perhaps missing out on that opportunity that causes her to reach out to and take after the various children in the city-- though it is just as likely that parents have loose lips around their children and she knows she can gain quite a lot of juicy information from them. Even so, many children go to her for advice on everything from their future careers to their love lives to moral dilemmas.

Kano Hiruto's Family
Kano Kazuma - He is is industrious, professional and accustomed to the rough company of sailors. He is frequently trying to "toughen" his eldest up. He enrolled his son as a bushi. Kazuma has some talent as a smith as well as shipwrighting. He created an iron tortoise medallion for his son.

Kano Motoko - She is the counter balance in the family, waiting in the wings with a patient smile and a bowl full of something tasty.

Kano Momoko - The second child and eldest daughter of the family. She is generally respectful of her older brother, but doesn't take his claims of becoming a great warrior too seriously. She shows more talent with crafts.

Kano Nobuto - The third child and second son in the family. Nobuto is vibrant and enthusiastic, maybe even a bit of a troublemaker. He is very obedient to his older siblings, but far less to anyone else. He very much wants to become a sailor some day, having dreams of swashbuckling. He has some doubts about his older brother becoming a warrior.

Isawa Sanjiro's Family
Isawa Shihei - He s a respected scholar who works in one of the many libraries scattered across the Chisei District.  A loremaster of some renown, he's a welcome sight in any court, as his boundless depth of knowledge and plethora of tales makes him extremely enjoyable company. He has traveled extensively across Rokugan and has many tales to tell of his experiences. He is extremely intelligent, perhaps even a little arrogant in his knowledge of Rokugan, and is impressed by anyone presenting him a question that he cannot find an answer for.

Isawa Ariko - She is one of the Jade Magistrates assigned to the Imperial City, guarding the empire against maho-tsukai and their insidious blood magic.  A blunt, stern woman, she has little patience for social niceties and is rather singleminded in pursuit of her goals.  Unsuprisingly she gets along quite well with the Kuni. She was gravely injured by a Maho-tsukai, and it was only due to the quick intervention of the kami that she survived. Although she is proud of the manifestation of the unique spiritual power of her younger child, she is also a little frustrated by his peaceful nature as she would rather he take up the cause of stopping those who seek to unravel Rokugan's peace.

Isawa Daigo - The eldest and first born son. Friendly and warm, he seems to have little trouble making friends wherever he goes.  Despite their age difference, he gets along well enough with his younger siblings, and Daigo is particularly protective of Sanjiro.  He has returned to Phoenix lands and is currently serving in the Flame Legion.

Isawa Haruko - The second eldest and eldest daughter. She adores their mother and is incredibly upset that she is unable to follow in her footsteps.  Very envious of her younger brother's talents and sees them as wasted given his extreme commitment to pacifism.  Currently in the last year or so of her studies with the Asako to become an Inquisitor.

Bayushi Shino's Family
Bayushi Noritoshi - A daimyo of an important fortress town that the World's Edge river runs through before going out to the rest of the Empire. He runs a tight inspection ship as it's the last port before trade travels out of their lands, and there's always something being smuggled out. He is a lynchpin in every sanctioned smuggling operation the Scorpion carries out. However, most of the Empire don't think he is that competent due to the amount of illegal contraband that always does get out (He must be a nepotism hire due to being from an important branch of the family). The fact that he's maintained plausible deniability this long is a testament to his skill.

Bayushi Misaki  - Formerly of the Otomo family, was originally a diplomatic envoy the Otomo sent to remind Noritoshi to do a better job and watch his work. She was rather uptight, moral, and constantly asking him questions and monologuing to him the importance of his duty. After many years of being at each other's throats, Misaki finally appreciated the necessity and sincerity of Noritoshi's methods. The Otomo approved of the wedding as long as they got preferential treatment in what contraband got smuggled to Owl lands.

Bayushi Chuuei - He is the diligent first son and heir to the family's land and titles. He views Shiho as a spoiled brat that he has to clean up after. He was quite glad when she went off to school.

Bayushi Reiko - She is barely 5 years old and constantly followed Shiho around doing everything she was doing. When Shiho lived in the household, Shiho adored Reiko as Reiko gave her unquestioning attention and love.

Otomo Shigenari - A retired administrative official of the Otomo living in the Hidari district. Although he didn't fully accept the clan's decision to marry Misaki to the Scorpion clan, he is very fond of his granddaughter and is often willing to buy the dresses and jewelry she requests.

Otomo Teruko - A legal scholar that married into the Otomo family, Teruko runs the household's servants and affairs very strictly, and has received detailed instructions as to how Shino should be taken care of. Shino is often very happy with these instructions, but Teruko is also the first one to notice when she's out of line and disciplines her for it.

Akodo Mei's Family
Akodo Miyako - Mei's mother, Miyako is a well-respected diplomat and magistrate. Her prominent lineage and skill with people means she very rarely spends time pursuing petty criminals or checking ship's paperwork. Rather, she handles the legal and investigative needs of important families and Imperial officers in Otosan Uchi. Miyako holds her position because she is popular with those important people, and cannily balances the demands of bushido and the demands of her position.

Akodo Ryouichi - Ryouichi descends from one of the most prominent lines of the Akodo family, and he can proudly trace his lineage- unbroken- back to Akodo himself. Perhaps this is why the Kami's cunning and strength are seen in him. Ryouichi is a judge and legal scholar, particularly in the area of bushido within Rokugan's legal code. His reputation as a man of honor proceeds him, helping him to cut a particularly intimidating figure. He teaches would-be magistrates and scholars within the city, where his letter of recommendation is seen as a bridge directly to rank within the Imperial Magistrates.

Akodo Ryunosuke - Mei's oldest brother is a student at the Akodo War College. He regularly writes letters back to his youngest sister offering her advice. Ryunosuke is a promising young commander with an impeccable lineage, ensuring he will rise high in the ranks of the Lion.

Akodo Yuu - Mei's older sister can be a bit of a bully. She's the top of her class in swordsmanship, and runs a crew of older kids who are frequently getting into trouble. They have a reputation as young hoodlums, and are absolutely a force to be feared by the younger children of Otosan Uchi.

Otomo Ichiko's Family
Otomo Ieyasu - He is a quiet reserved man, carrying a great deal of authority, through wisdom and knowledge.  An exemplary of the Bushido code, the calculating, and patient man has worked hard to gather the station, and accolades he now holds.  Ichiko is not only his oldest, but his only child, having never remarried.  While his expectations have never been stated, the young girl knows them well.  Family, honour, duty and tradition, she is meant to serve, seeks to please her father, a man she loves dearly.

Otomo Yasuko - The few details Ichiko has gathered from her father, was that she was beautiful, wild, and rode on horseback.  He speaks of her in past tense, but never in terms of death.  "A tale for another time," are the words she hears when her questions probe too deep.  All that she has left of her is a Unicorn warhorse, abandoned in some luxurious stables, aging and unridden.  With it running free only in the dreams of the young Ichiko, who in truth has never ridden a horse.

Otomo Nobu and Otomo Natsuro - Ichiko is a single child, but she grew up with cousins, all men around her, and all older.  Her closest cousins Nobu, and Natsuro treated her like a little sister, but duty has sent them far by the time she was eight.

Hina - Not a family member, but a servant. Ichika's dearest friend however is the daughter to one of the servants, Hina, who share a love for imagination, and wonder, though Ichiko often is the one that has to weave the tales they share.

Battue Akiro's Family
Battue Hakuri serious and cunning shugenja. He knows well the traditions and customs of Rokugan having studied and been steeped in them since his youth. For this reason he can move in the courts with some degree of competence with making the obvious mistakes.  He is often seen in service of the Unicorn diplomates and magistrates when dealing with matter of that involve the gaijin magics, as he seems well versed in the different forms of magic employed by those beyond the empire. He is also well versed in the traditions of some of the gaijin, or at least versed enough as not to offend and can be seen in their company.

Battue Akari is a wild spirit bound by customs very foreign and that many would say are heretical to Rokugan culture.  With a white painted face at times, and lips of black, hair matted in locks she is shocking to witness. Hard bodied, her life is not one of comfort but rather one spent riding, gathering and providing for herself. She lets her children learn their lessons through experiences rarely restraining them even in polite company. Before the courts of Otosan Uchi she is often silent, letting whatever insults and misconceptions the samurai sling her way flow past her. She has nothing to prove to them and seems confident confident and proud of her heritage. She is sought after by the Ujik community, samurai, heiman, and even hinin for her wisdom, but among the great clans she holds no position or reputation of prominence.

Battue Yuuro & Yuuko are the brother and sister of Akiro. As twins they are deeply connected and rarely are seen without the other. There is a strange resemblance between the two but their hair and dress separate them. They are carefree, happy, but polite, taking more of the Battue teachings in over their older brother.

Battue Riki is only four, but he is a whirlwind. He doesn't like people making fun of him, taking things like that more seriously than his other siblings who know to laugh such things away. He is shorter than most kids his age, but broad and meaty, with a good bit of strength behind him.

Yam Yam is an old woman of Ujik decent that has long been in the service of the family. She is said to be more than 100 years old, having taken care of their mother, Battue Akari. Her toothless smile has brought smiles to the children and her physical comedy laughter. Battue Akari is said to have learned her mothering style from the old caretaker who seems more ready to laugh at the children's stupidity than help them prevent make those mistakes unless the harm that will come of it would be great.

Battue Kaede is a young samurai under the tutelage of Battue Hakuri. She's of a wild beauty, with sharp green eyes, and skin of tanned gold. Where she can be soft and caring with the children, she takes her standing as a samurai very seriously, and is quick to change faces when required. She is everywhere Battue Hakuri is unless she is on errands for him.
