SAMPLE OF PLAY

OUR THREE SAMPLE PCS:

Istvan, the human Fighter.

Luisa, the elf Sorcerer.

Zedrax, the goblin Rogue.

Luisa has led the party to a huge tree that has a couple of treehouses built around the trunk. The tree is supposedly a famous refuge for any elves needing safety in the wilderness... but no one seems to be home...

Climbing up a rope dangling from the first level, the party is confronted by a large bark beetle... which advances, trying to bite anyone it can get close enough to.

Istvan: This looks like a job for violence. I'll attack. I get +4 because of my Forceful stat, my sword, and my class...

Istvan rolls: 9, using 2d6+4, with rolls of 3,2.

The GM rolls: 3, using 2d6, with rolls of 2,1. Istvan's roll is higher, so that's success for Istvan.

Istvan rolls damage: 5, using 2d3 ((2,3)).

The GM: The beetle is on its last legs... but it's still coming.

Zedrax: I'll try to finish it off with a crossbow bolt. I get +2 because of my Agility stat...

Zedrax rolls 11, using 2d6+2 ((3,6)).

The GM rolls 9 using 2d6 ((5,4)). Zedrax's roll is higher, so that's success for Zedrax.

Zedrax rolls for damage: a lucky 6! using 1d6 ((6)).

The GM: Yeah, this beetle will never threaten anyone ever again.

The party searches the treehouse for more enemies, finds none, then searches for clues for what might have happened here recently.

The party must choose one player to roll... because of his Insightful stat, they choose Zedrax.

Zedrax rolls 6, using 2d6+1 with rolls of 3,2.

The GM rolls 6, using 2d6 with rolls of 1,5. Partial success/partial failure.

The GM tells Zedrax that he finds a letter someone was writing about how everything was getting dangerous suddenly, that monsters were around, but then it trails off while starting to talk about "a beautiful song..." ...But also, the GM explains, something a little bad happens, and the GM invites Zedrax to say what that something is.

Zedrax says that he hit his head while he was crawling under a bed to look for clues and that now he's a little rattled. Zedrax and the GM agree that Zedrax will take a -1 penalty on Zedrax's next roll.

So the party finds a short rope that pulls down a set of stairs, and they head up to the next level...

A large section of planking has broken somehow, and they have to jump across... Istvan rolls for the party...

Istvan rolls 10, using 2d6+2, with rolls of 3,5.

The GM rolls 10, using 2d6, with rolls of 4,6. Partial success/partial failure.

Everyone gets across, but Istvan only barely makes it, and he hits a railing on the other side, and it knocks the wind out of him. He takes a -1 penalty on his next roll, like Zedrax...

Suddenly, a harpy flies down and starts singing! Everyone has to roll against her magical song entrancing them... This involves their Insightful stat.

Everyone fails their roll... except Zedrax, who ties with the GM. The GM states that Zedrax is paralyzed, except for speaking.

The harpy starts to lead Istvan and Luisa to the hole in the planking that they just jumped over...

Zedrax attempts to shout at Luisa and make so much noise that he snaps her out of the enchantment... but he fails his roll!

Istvan and Luisa fall through the hole!

But falling breaks the spell! They try to control their fall (Agile stat)...

Istvan rolls a 13! (The GM only rolls a 9.) Since his roll was so Awesome, Istvan manages to grab the floor at the edge of the hole, AND grab Luisa's arm, saving her!

Luisa tries casting Magic Missile at the harpy, quick, before she's entranced again:

Luisa: 11 (9, plus 2 for her Charisma Stat.) (The GM rolled a 7.) Success for Luisa!

Luisa's Magic Missile spell does 2d2 damage... She's rolls a 3.

The harpy doesn't like that at all! Her song is interrupted and she backs off, hurt badly, flying up higher in the tree...

Since she's stopped singing, the party is able to get back up out of the hole safely...
