Sabotage
1500 1800 2100 2200 2300 0000
Summary:
-While the ship was in repair dock at Starbase 211, Captain Maxwell's command codes were used to access sensitive power distribution systems
-Following a critical failure in Sickbay, the crew discovers other systems have also been sabotaged including inertial dampeners on a shuttle craft and the communications array
-The sabotage incidents all follow the same pattern - algorithms in secondary backup systems have been slightly modified to make systems less robust and increase the likelihood of failure
-Saboteurs have inserted a worm program that interferes with authentication and hides the revocation of Captain Maxwell’s command codes from the subsystems
-Security confirms that Maxwell's codes have been removed from the central computer, but the worm apparently permits local over-rides
-To eradicate the worm and revert the subsystems to untampered code, a phage program could be created to repair the damage and protect against further instances of the worm
-Using a simulated system to deconstruct the worm, Thatyil, Norn and Krenn discover that the worm has infected obsolete sub-processors throughout the ship - they devise a repair plan that includes surreptitiously replacing systems that have not already failed
-Repairs to major systems are completed and there is no reason to suspect any saboteurs
have been alerted
-Aided by information provided by the security department, Dr Bishop reveals suspicious 'oversights' by a medical officer named Ensign Yu
Questions unanswered:
-Was MacLearen a target of an attack or an innocent victim?
-Was the sabotage done by a member of the crew or was it done by personnel at Starbase 211?
