Re: Washed Ashore

A forest. Well, a wooded area, anyhow. How extensive remains to be seen.

"Thank the Thunderer!" Vinlas said as he spat out the sea. "I too agree to starting a fire and chasing away the chill of the sea. In the morrow we can hunt to fill our bellies and skins to make shelters." The stranded stablehand said as he wrung clothes out.

"Aye, a large fire will warm us up and lift our spirits. If we decide to wander inland a bit to build it, we should mark this spot," Eyvindir says. "If we washed ashore here, it's possible some supplies eventually wash up here as well."

Re: Washed Ashore

Well, then...make a fire out of what? Most likely choices are the bits of ship that washed up with you, although they may need a little finessing to catch fire. They are as wet as you are, after all. Next obvious choice is hitting that forest now, if just for firewood.

Of course, you folks may have other thoughts.

Ingvar smiled and nodded in thanks to Eyvindir, and marked each of the others as they spoke. Everyone seemed to have different ideas on how to proceed, which was only natural he supposed, the shock of the situation still fresh. Looking around he pulled a bit on the collar of his waterlogged shirt as he rose back up. They needed to get dry, and to have some source of heat and light. Brushing the sand off his hands, he walked over to the edge of the forest and began walking along the brush, picking up whatever sticks and branches he could find to use as firewood and kindling.

Situated at the highest point on the beach, Bjarne turned back to the crowd “Beyond this mound of sand is a forest, it might be best if we could start heading towards it, especially the stronger ones.” Bjarne this time has waited for the response of others. “And if there is anyone who hasn’t woken up still I will pull them out closer to the forest, and stay with them until they woke up

"As it was foretold by the stars, I knew this was going to happen." a women says, this whole time she was busy reading a book while the others were busy talking to each other. Her time on that ship was interesting to say the least, the gazes she felt that where their but actually not was something she wanted to study,"Ah, it is too bad that it was destined to be this way." she says sadly, then she pulls out a piece of crystal and with a few ancient words, flames suddenly conjured out of her palm and left a burnt crater on the sand,"Y'strahl is my name, if you wish for fire, I shall help bring you. Destiny must certainly be kind to you for having someone like me."

"Best we stick together, get near the trees and start a fire. Maybe the best way to start a fire would be dry wood from the forest floor and allow it to dry a log or two from the ship." Vinlas moves towards the woods to gather tinder and kindling.

Re: Washed Ashore

Seeing Vinlas start to move towards the wood, Bjarne followed in his direction. "Now that everyone has come back to their senses, let's start working. And my lady your presence will be appreciated in days to come, I am sure." Y'strahl skillset was impressive to say the least, and her outlook on the event that brought them all to this beach coincided with what Bjarne was thinking. Finally he will have company who he can share his thoughts with.

Once near the woods, Bjarne will try searching for anything resembling cordage or treebark that could be as flexible to fit the bill.

Re: Washed Ashore

Bjarne really doesn't have the skill or training for that sort of thing.

However, setting up a quick shelter is no effort for Stig, and getting a good fire going in front of it safely can be done by anyone with survival training, which is about half of you, I think

If you like, we can call the day here and pic up in the morning. There isn't time for foraging on Day 1, I'm afraid, so it's going to be a hungry night.

Baring word to the contrary, it'll be morning when I post at noon tomorrow. Any clerics or wizards that want to alter their spell mix, send me new lists to your private threads.

He helps to build the fire.

Seeing that he is out of depth trying to gather building supplies, Bjarne realized that he could cause more harm then help with his current attempts. Instead he swirled his hands around  summoning a ball of light, adorned with runes that flickered across its surface, which followed the stronger and more adept gatherers.

Once the temporary shelter has been built and all supplies gathered, Bjarne will find the space in which to rest for the night.

"No one asked, so it's mostly your fault your here." Y'strahl says in a cheeky manner to Eyvindir's response,"Even if I had, it wouldn't change the outcome, for now it's time to stick to the present instead of mulling over the past." she says, and follows the others for rest. She'll help light up any drywood they find.

Re: Washed Ashore

"As a general rule, if you're at sea, then storms are a constant question. Now that we are in a strange new land raids, plague, famine, anything which might hurt us is another question which needn't be voiced. Should your 'stars tell you'" Eyvindir says with a dismissive gesture and a skeptical laugh, "that any of these things are going to occur, considered the question already voiced even if you don't hear it."

He seems content to leave it at that, but a smirk crosses his face and he adds as pedantically as possible to try to irk the bookworms, "And for what it's worth... I asked you to tell us of the future, that's the opposite of the past. No one is mulling over anything except for you and that book." He hunches over and continues working on the fire.

Y'strahl close her book after hearing that remark,".... Hmph, with an attitude like that, I don't feel like bothering to tell you specifically on what happens to your future." she says, somewhat peeved at that book comment, but she tries her best to remain composed. Though she can't help but imagine lighting his head on fire as she lights up the wood.

Re: Washed Ashore

For the record, a bolt of fire smashing into the pile of twigs and branches is a bit...rough as a way to start a fire. But very effective, if messy.

Roll a d20 for us, Y'strahl, with all firebolt attack mods. Not too well, as you don't want flaming debris to catch the whole area on fire.

Eyvindir's eyes go wide and a huge grin grows on his face as he sees the woman about to cast a spell. "There we go!" he says encouraging her on as he takes a few steps back... just in case. "Nothing like a little anger to get someone working."

Y'strahl, feeling somewhat goaded by Eyvindir's word, let out a jet of flame that caught the entirety of the pile of twigs and branches, all of which caught fire. Maybe a bit too much fire.

10:20, Today: Secret Roll: Y'strahl rolled 19 using 1d20+5 with rolls of 14.  Firebolt Attack.

Ooh, is this what you mean by not too well

Re: Washed Ashore

Y'strahl's fit of irritation does light the fire. It also knocks flaming fragments here and there which does the local brush no good. Folks running about for a few minutes gets it mostly under control and rescues the bigger burning pieces to reconstruct the fire.

That might not be the best option for fire starting, going forward.

OOC:
It could have been worse. Technically it's inanimate, so basically Paralyzed. That's Advantage, and a Crit if you're 5' or closer. It's also low enough to the ground to make it Prone, which is Advantage within 5', Disadvantage outside that limit. I'm assuming distance on this attempt, so Advantage and Disadvantage canceled and no crit damage.

Eyvindir runs around helping everyone clean up the flames before returning to the woman and putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. "I guess the stars could not have... oh no wait," he puts a hand to his brow and squints towards the sky, "there it is! There's the star which predicted that a flame bolt would blow up a pile of wood!"

He laughs heartily, making it clear just how nonsensical he thinks concepts such as fate and destiny seem to him. He gives his most disarming, charismatic smile, trying to calm the situation then pulls out his flute. Soon a relaxing melody floats through the air. It seems like this is his way of apologizing for his part in the destruction.

Y'strahl tries to help quell the flames, after that fiasco, she turns toward Eyvindir and clenched her fist,"Wah, grr, I'll show you stars." she says, about to get physical, but restrains herself. She's better then that, but then she calms down as the melodious flute music envelops the quiet night,".... Hmph, no one can truly understand fate, that's not our calling. I am simply an interpreter of what I see, I do not know all." she says, sounding more calmer as the flute music keeps playing.

Re: Washed Ashore

After a bit of a getting-to-know each other phase around to reassembled campfire you all trying to stretch out under the lean too. Luckily or not, given you lack of blankets, the close quarters helps conserve body heat. Snoring and sleep twitching may make u for the extra body heat, however.

And, finally, your watch free night under the trees ends with some bird song. Lots and Lots of bird song. You awaken, stomachs rumbling, reaching for the food that isn't there.

It's time to decide your priorities for the day...and address #1 on our list, whatever you decide that may be.

OOC:
You are good without food for 3 days, modified by Con. Water, however is a daily need.
You've just passed one day without either, assuming breakfast the day before. However, there is actually a good chance you would have hit the water barrel once or twice before the storm ht, so that's half a day's water ration. That allows a DC 15 Con Save. D20, +Con Modifier, +2 IF your class gets a Con save bonus (marked on you sheet next to the Modifier, if so))

Post rolls in your private threads, planning in IC.

Re: Washed Ashore

With only partial results in, it's not looking good. Not a single success, so far.

Failure, in this case, means a level of Exhaustion. The first level of Exhaustion puts all ability rolls at Disadvantage. This means you roll 2 dice and take the lower (plus the usual mods). This WILL impact finding drinkable water. It will go away after a long rest, IF you find water to drink before then. Attack rolls and Saving throws are not affected (at level 1 of Exhaustion, anyhow)

Bjarne's night went exactly as he had expected it to go, cold, uncomfortable and exhausting, and the process of waking up, didn't go any better either. Still shivering from the chilling wind, stomach hurting, Bjarne woke up before anyone else did, slightly rolling around restlessly before getting back on his feet.

Once awake and fully aware of his surroundings, Bjarne would take a short walk towards the beach to take a survey if the tides have perhaps left behind some gifts during the night.

If anything, there might be less than the night before. It's hard to say. Strange clutter is strange clutter. Certainly no new bits of recognizable cargo. Most of that probably sank. Pity, the blacksmith needed that anvil.
