House Rules

The following are rulings that have cropped up during play.

Duplicate actions
I have no problem with more than one character attempting the same or a similar action from the same spot. Describe your character's action and make what you believe to be the best choice of roll. The in-character equivalent is that one character looks into the sky to examine what bird is above them but a bit of dust blows into their eye, whilst another sees clearly the shape and wingspan of a wyvern...

What a character can't do is attempt the same action more than once from the same spot. They've attempted it and the result has happened. They cannot re-roll hoping for a different outcome.

Diagonal Distances
We are playing the optional 5-10 diagonals rule, found on page 252 of the DM's handbook.

quote:
When measuring range or moving diagonally on a grid, the first diagonal square counts as 5 feet, but the second diagonal square counts as 10 feet. This pattern of 5 feet and then 10 feet continues whenever you're counting diagonally, even if you move horizontally or vertically between different bits of diagonal movement. For example, a character might move one square diagonally (5 feet), then three squares straight (15 feet), and then another square diagonally (10 feet) for a total movement of 30 feet.

Flanking
We are not playing the optional flanking rule on page 251 of the DM's handbook.

Why? I've heard that it can create unrealistic 'conga line' arrangements in battle and/or be overpowered. It also negates pack tactics since your enemies cannot gain double advantage. And as you've already seen, pack tactics may play a part in this adventure for certain enemies.
