Out of Character Chat (OOC)

Saul is a human merchant who learned the way of wizards to expand his expertise into magical items and oddities.  I originally told the DM that he would be a transmuter but as I've considered the character, I think an abjurer would be better (protecting his wares and all that).  His alignment is Neutral.

The defining point in his life was when he was working for a client and failed to produce the goods they were looking for.  They punished him by killing his adult brother who left behind a wife and two children.  To cope with the loss, he turned to traveling and adventuring with the purpose of acquiring rare items.  To appease his guilt, he has gold shipped to his brother's family whenever he has the opportunity.  He doesn't offer up this aspect of his life arbitrarily, but after traveling with him for some time, he would be honest about it when he becomes nostalgic or has to explain where his gold is going.

He's never addressed the loss of his brother and wonton murder is very triggering.  He has also never taken a life and will likely not kill any intelligent foes should battles arise.  Killing another sentient being may break him.  Therefor, you will see defensive and creative uses of his spells rather than fireballs & necromancy.

I thought it would be a nice connection with one of you if you reminded him of his brother.  It would make you endearing to him and he'd be rather protective of you, more so than the rest of the party.  You don't need to be male to fill this role and I've purposely left his brother's personality undefined at this point to accommodate someone's character.  Being open to his familial affection is the main requirement here.

Daily interactions have shown that he's a proud man and enjoys showing off knowledge that he has.  He revels in negotiations and will haggle until the sunsets and rises again if allowed to.  He's not very charitable and believes people need to carry their own weight.  Also, he, unfortunately, comes off as a snob more often than he should, but would be taken aback if you accused him of it.

His integrity is important to him. You can count on him to sell whatever goods you'd like to part with and see all the gold it was actually negotiated for (he wouldn't even charge you a fee).

Out of Character Chat (OOC)

Nevari is a tiefling woman who grew up in a fishing town on the coast. Her human father was a fisherman and she was born into a loving family surrounded by her siblings, parents, and friends. As a teen, she became wayward and joined a local gang, her glasya heritage from her tiefling mother kicked in and she rose to be a respected member, though not high-ranking. She became heavily involved in all kinds of crime and took part in vices on occasion. This caused a huge conflict between her and her family, especially between her and her father. He still welcomed Neverai home anytime she showed up though.

She became the girlfriend of a fellow tiefling gang member, Ervenom. Who was becoming progressively entrenched in a demonic cult that had little patience for non-followers. Nevari's unwillingness to join Ervenom's cult activity turned deadly when the cult decided to cull some of its opposers, Nevari's father being one of the most vocal of them. As soon as she heard the word of the hunt she ran home to hide her father. Only to find him slaughtered and Ervenom toeing his bloody body.

She lashed out at her boyfriend, managing to snap off a horn, but he fled before she could kill him. Next, she let loose on the gang leader, who claimed to protect his followers and their families. He punished her for daring to act out and questioned her loyalty. Nevari realised if she stayed more of her family could wind up dead. She left that night without saying a proper goodbye to her mother or siblings.

Since then she has been travelling the lands and selling her talents, sending the money back home by way of her older brother, a travelling merchant. Nevari deems herself utterly responsible for her father's death and feels she can never return home. But she is determined to do right by her family and care for them, by staying away. She drowns herself in drink sometimes but has otherwise given up vices. Finding comfort in her pet snake and the little things in life.

Her fighting style is brutal and deadly, she is obviously used to killing and torture. But she doesn't show any signs of particularly enjoying it, it's just business. She is quiet but not humourless. If you ever need someone skilled in the disposal of problems, or need something special smuggled in. Either Nevari can do it or she knows someone who can do it.

Out of Character Chat (OOC)

Ylan is an Assimar who has lived a life of servitude devoted to divine ideals. In her older years she is beginning to see the different between her celestial blooded patrons and what they have come to expect of their mortal worshippers.

Ylan has lived a full life (about 100 years) and she isn't afraid to admit it even though her heart is heavy from the amount of friends she has buried. An odd combination of a heavy heart and an uplifted spirit Ylan enjoys a good laugh. Her dark eyes stare out from her aged face like a child, still able to marvel at the wonders of the world.

Accompanied by her familiar, Tuffy, Ylan is a devoted acolyte, Ylan performs minor rituals and services for those connected to the church of the Dawn flower and offers the healing that the church is know for. Led to the area by signs, portents, and Tuffy, Ylan has immersed herself in the history of the area to see if she can understand what darkness looms on the horizon.

I expect that Ylan might fill the role of the game's sorcerous heal-bot :)

Out of Character Chat (OOC)

I have to admit that I'm a little at a loss for connections that would inspire the three of us to travel together.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

At best, Saul would look for people heading in the same direction as him to travel together for safety reasons.

@GM

Have we been together up until this point or do you have a reason for us to all show up in one spot?

Perhaps Saul hired Nevari for protection? That is a common job in her line of work.

18 stat max before racial bonuses. All official DnD 5e material available. Pick one magical item which should be 'iconic' to your character.

Max hp per level.
Starting equipment per class

Out of Character Chat (OOC)

Sorry for the late reply.  I didn't realize I had been added to the game.  This is my first game on RPOL, but I've done a lot of play-by-post on RPGCrossing.

I was raised in the High Forest near the Star Mountains.  Our village of Tieflings was small and we mainly kept to ourselves.  Some of the men of our tribe were great hunters and warriors, which I so wanted to be.  But because I was a girl, I was not allowed to join them.  Instead, I would leave for days at a time to gather fruits and herbs throughout the forest and along the mountains.  These excursions were wrought with their own dangers and I became a strong fighter in my own right; fending off wild animals and living off the land.

On one of these trips, when I was 17 years old, I was several days out on my journey.  I came across a ridge in the mountains and spied a horde of orcs marching down the road that would lead to our village.  I dropped everything I had and raced home.  I kept running and running and running.  It must have been 20 or 30 miles back to our village; but I didn’t stop.  I couldn’t stop.  I had to warn my tribe.  I finally arrived and collapsed from exhaustion.  The men did all they could to prepare.  The horde arrived early the next day.  The men fought bravely, but there were simply too many orcs. I was still weak from my run the day before and found myself cowering in a shed on the edge of the village.  The orcs took what they wanted, killed those that stood in their way, and continued their march like we were nothing more than a bump in the road.  Something inside of me ignited and I vowed then and there to avenge my tribe one day.

My family managed to escape the bloodshed, but there was not much left of our village.  I decided to leave.  I needed to become a better warrior and restore pride to our clan.  Being alone in the wild gave me a sense of peace so I enjoyed traveling on my own and being the only person for miles.  But when I did join other civilizations, it usually only fueled my rage.  Most people watched me with a wary eye or pulled their children close as I passed in the street.  Occasionally I would have an insult hurled my way.  I made sure to study the face of them and will repay them in kind.

I once spent some time in a halfling village.  I had weathered a particularly nasty storm with no shelter and was cold and starving when I stumbled across them.  They showed me kindness and took me in.  I hadn’t felt that kind of warmth since I left home.  I stayed because they taught me valuable skills.  They kept me because I offered some form of protection from the wild animals in the area.  After about a year, it was time to move on.
