As we start talking, the first topic is for character creation...

Many of the races I'm unsure of saying yes or no...except for sure all common are available.  I'm leaning to several uncommon and even a few rare.

So talk to me about what you want to play if it's not common.

Second..pros and cons and thoughts on the free archetype.

Hey gang, Gnomish Bard isn't very unique, but I think fits well. I'd like to explore the differences between 1e and 2e bards.

I don't really know of the cons to a free archetype, but from the little I've heard, 5e players really like the idea. I'd fit in that category.

First off, hi and thanks for the invite!

I think despite trashing barbarians earlier I might try an ape instinct barbarian here, playing the role of circus strong(wo)man. It would work much better for free archetype (I'd likely take wrestler at level 2)

Free archetype has kind of become almost de facto standard variant rule for 2e, I think 3 of the 4 2e games I'm active in use it. Just so everyone is on the same page, https://2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=1333 .

From that link:

quote:
Depending on the needs of the group and the theme of the game, you might restrict the free feats to those of a single archetype each character in the group has (for a shared backstory), those of archetypes fitting a certain theme (such as only ones from magical archetypes in a game set in a magic school), or entirely unrestricted if you just want a higher-powered game.

So if you wanted to restrict it to a limited subset of 'circus appropriate' archetypes I could see that working well. Or just open it up to anything. It does raise the power level a bit (every character gets an extra class feat every 2 levels) but hasn't been overwhelming in my experience.

In my research on it, that's what I found as well.

I did note this though that is something to discuss. I don't know if there are many games that have got high enough level to see how it effects the game at those levels...

free-archetype characters are a bit more versatile and powerful than normal, but usually not so much that they unbalance your game. However, due to the characters’ increased access to archetype feats, you should place a limit on the number of feats that scale based on a character’s number of archetype feats (mainly multiclass Resiliency feats). Allowing a character to benefit from a number of these feats equal to half their level is appropriate, as this is the maximum number of feats you could use to take archetype feats without this variant.

Yes, to be fair I've never played higher than level 2, so don't know if it's unbalancing at higher levels. I definitely see it mentioned a lot among more experienced players as a preferred way to do 2e.

Hi folks!

I've just been let in. I have a bot of experience with PF2e but games keep folding before I get characters anywhere. I'd be interested in playing something that fits in with the rest of the party, but first I'll try and find out what the setup is. Something to do with a circus....

Start at level 1?

Hey everyone, I came in with a Ratfolk Inventor on the table. I like free archetype, because I am sucker for customization, but can roll either way with it. Azvaq will have a giant construct for his invention named Cogs, original, he knows ;) So anything as far as Archetype would be to probably expand on his personal repertoire of actions while he's command Cogs to stomp.

Azvaq has the clown background, where he portrayed a Detective alongside of Cogs from the big city of Absalom. Azvaq grew up in the circus and has never been so he takes all his cues from stories he's heard, so his act is horribly stereotypical and includes lots of good cop bad cop shenanigans as well as physical humor.

I think Captivator or Folklorist would be super fun as possible archetypes!

Gnigma's background will probably be Entertainer.

IME, PF2 does require a certain amount of party balance, especially having some front liners (not having them has made things very difficult in a game or two I have been in) and also making sure certain skills are well covered, like Medicine and Thievery.

So, I might have an idea for a charismatic gnome rogue, assuming we have some muscle.

But I'd like to see where some people settle before I decide.

Re: The Bigtop (ooc)

My current build has neither Medicine nor Thievery unfortunately. There's just not enough hours in the day to learn it all! ;-) I do have the Soothe spell however, so a small bit of healing help. I've got all the Face skills covered pretty well, and some general cantrips. Not much for combat. My internet at home is still wonky, so I can't pull up my Pathbuilder. Hopefully I can get it transferred here tomorrow.

Re: The Bigtop (ooc)

Arell hasn't come onboard yet. He usually posts about now. So he should be getting things together shortly.

He had said...For my part I've had a wizard character lying around for a while that might work...actually plays up the whole "stage magician" stuff with a focus on illusions.

Although now that I think of it, a Lion-taming Ranger might be fun.

Re: The Bigtop (ooc)

Small note, Azvaq's Background is Clown, the detective thing was just a bit he does as a clown. Has a badge that squirts water when squeezed, and all that.

That being said I am thinking about keeping Circus Lore up to date given his background growing up in the circus. I was also going to keep Thievery and Acrobatics up as well. If this conflicts with someone else's build then happy to rearrange.

If we are doing free archetype I may do something like Fireworks Technician, Azvaq's natural curiosity for building things would definitely include explosive pretty things :)

Thoughts?

Re: The Bigtop (ooc)

Sounds fine. I don't know if it is a big deal if there are overlapping skills in PF2. I think this is only my second game or so. A few games don't count if it doesn't go beyond level 2 :)

Let me ask a question on off-rpol character sheets for PF2.
What do people use?

I use Pathbuilder personally, I am hoping it'll be ok for me to manage my character there with a link to RPOL? But if not I can transcribe it.
