The Solar System

I've developed and updated the Solar System and it's various parts bit by bit over the years with each iteration of this basic game. However, I had a major data failure last summer and lost all my game world info for a couple different game systems and over half a dozen settings and game ideas. So please bear with me as I reconstruct a surprising number of hours lost research basics on the solar system, it's planets, various farming and ranching requirements, and a couple different Gurps source books to get it all to have usable numbers. It is surprising how useful LTC3 was for farming stats.

Please bear with me as I'm reconstructing some of it on the fly, as needed. Right now, for instance, I'm still on character generation. Colony growth can wait until other stages have been done, if needed.

Society

I'll cover each group or planet or moon separately, but some things are universal.

The Internet, as such, is limited to planets. Oh, it could be constructed for each Lagrange point, but that adds a LOT of excess radio transmission.

Earth, Luna, and Mars each have their own World Wide Webs. The name says it all: World, not System. Each ship and satellite will have a central computer, and it can be used to form a network for that ship/satellite.

For our purposes, Satellite is enough, and all inhabited ones are SM+15 at this point. Belters may still be limited to ships, however.

This means Wikipedia and it's heirs have been replaced by the return of Encyclopedias. Really BIG encyclopedias. Assume every SM+15 satellite has something equivalent to a digital Library of Congress.

Queries can be made to the closest planet based WWW hub, of course, but long distance charges apply, as may usage charges.

Each planet or group will have it's own entry, below.

Earth

Earth is...well, Earth. The goal for Mars, and the one place you don't really need special precautions to live on. Well, in theory. Earth has the usual problem: other people.

It has the pre-eminent WWW, a beanstalk to get around that pesky gravity well, and lots and lots of people from a variety of places and with a variety of ideas.

Area Knowledge for Earthers should be City or County/Parish (if the US is your home) or an equivalent for other countries. Some smaller states or provinces might allow for that as a choice, as well.

Earthers frequently learn to Drive, usually cars or motorcycles, and may be hobby pilots. Plus, of course, all those wonderful outdoors skills from camping and hiking and mountain climbing, oh my. Even skiing swimming, boating and whatnot. The sky is the limit.

Luna

Loonies live in Domes. They also live in micro gravity, technically, at .16 Earth normal.

Area Knowledge should be their Dome.

They should have Improved G-tolerance at .5 for 10 points. This is a physical requirement for qualification. It enables you, barely, to handle a full gravity with the right increment training.

All Loonies should also have at least 1 point into Environmental Suit (Vacc Suit) from emergency training.

The Moon doesn't really need it, gravity is so slight, but it has a Beanstalk.

Mars

Martians used to be trained in Vacc suit, and bear remarkable resemblance to Loonies, save for the differing gravity. Then another tech breakthrough sped up the conversion of Methane to carbon and free hydrogen, and the conversion of Ammonia to Nitrogen and free Hydrogen. Add a few CO2 impacts and you've replaced the lost greenhouse effect with CO2 and H2O. Then add even more water ice for oceans.

And that's where they are now: Ammonia becoming nitrogen, with Oxygen high enough that respirators and very thick clothing replace vacc suits. Simple plants are starting to grow and photosynthesize and every year or so a new water asteroid makes it rain. Weather is starting to develop slowly, but aquatic life is still a few years away.

As with Luna, Area Knowledge is the home Dome.

All Martians learn Environmental Suit (NBC) from emergency training.

Martians may learn to drive ATVs and hovercraft, but it's a rare teenager that does so. Outdoor work is done by scientists and terraforming crews.

Martians should have an Improved G Tolerance of .3 for 5 points. This is a requirement for qualification.

Mars has no beanstalk, as the periodic bombardment of asteroids that is still on going makes it hazardous. The equator is the preferred placement for both.

Satellites

Satellites, for this purpose, are SM+15 models following one of three standard deck plans: Housing, Ranch, and Recreation. Also, of course, a shipyard Satellite.

Housing Sats: Built to hold people. They are self sufficient and can live off home grown hydroponics, but a little meat and variety is nice, so each cluster has a Farming/Ranching Sat that provides pork, beef, fowl, and lamb. Plus eggs, milk, and cheese, of course, as well as an occasional bit of vegetation best grown in dirt rather than height limited hydroponics labs.

And, of course, everyone needs somewhere to go on vacation: The Rec Sat.

Satellites are collected in clusters at various Lagrange points throughout the System:
-Sun-Earth: L1 and L2. Each of these clusters is built around a specialized Science Sat. the L1 Sat monitors the Sun for solar activity, while the L2, in Earth's Shadow, studies the rest of the galaxy, and even other bits of the universe.

-Earth-Moon L4 and L5. The original Satellite clusters. Probably the most densely populated. L5 is the Cluster with the Interplanetary Port Sat, as well.

-Saturn-Tethys These points get a little too much ring dust abrasion to be safe. L4 and L5 each have a moon in them.

-Saturn-Dione. The L4 and L5 from this pair seem to be less troubled by space dust (well, hail, as a lot of what hits Calypso is actually water ice) so they are the choices for Saturn clusters. Each of these points also has a moon in them, but the stability is somewhat erratic. Luckily, Satellites were designed with course correction engines and fuel tanks, and Saturn has plenty of fuel waiting to be mined.

The SCP training Sat is around Helene in L5

Area Knowledge is their satellite, of course, which  works at -2 to -5 for most other Satellites of the same deck plan.

Emergency training gives Environment Suit(Vacc Suit)

If you're from a Rec Sat, you'll likely know at least 1 point of FreeFall.

Belters

The belt is mostly dead as a mining destination. Oh, Ceres has enough water ice for those still living there, and some Sats have been built, but most Belters are living in old ships, mostly SM+12 and SM+13. Default gravity is .5G.

However, these ships are old. Left overs from TL 10 and 11. Of course, parts aren't available for these old ships, and if you have access to a nano fac to make replacement parts, you may as well just replace the section with something more modern. This means that belters tend to have mechanic skills for all 3 tech levels.

Area Knowledge is their Ship, of course, but most have Area Knowledge (Solar System) as well, as they don't have Clusters, Rec Sats, Ranch Sats, or anything else that Sardines do. They're still working miners and go where the work is.

Emergency training gives Environment Suit(Vacc Suit)

They also know at least 1 point of FreeFall, 1 point of Crewman(Spacer), and 1 point of Prospecting.

A .3 improved G tolerance is required

Ringers

They used to be belters, but they moved where the product was, and have kept up with technology. The down side is that they are working miners with an support infrastructure that belters don't have: the Saturn Clusters. Ships are generally family units from smaller SM 9 single family jobbers to large extended families in SM 11 ships that are almost whole mining companies. A lot of time is spent at 0-g, but spin is used as much as possible. Still, ships those sizes don't have much gravity even under spin. They usually have a single Habitat in a Core area, and lots of cargo or fuel storage (or engines if they act as tugs for asteroids destined for Mars or the SCP Shipyard).

Area Knowledge is the Rings. Every ship captain has a favorite spot for whatever he or she prefers to mine.

Improved G Tolerance .5 is required. native gravity is .3G

G Experience for 1 G reflects time spent on a Rec Sat, Ranch Sat, or Shipyard Sat.

All Ringers have at least 1 point in the following:
-Prospecting
-Environment Suit (Vacc Suit)
-Free Fall
-Piloting (Low performance Spacecraft)
-Crewman(Spacer),
