Puerto Serena

After an uneventful journey of 3 days, you manage to reach the large island, Isla Serena, in the Greater Cuiverra region on which Puerto Serena is located.

Per Orlov's plan, the ship docks some distance away from the island proper, in a secluded cove on a small, jungle-covered island near Isla Serena, where you shouldn't be disturbed. From there, you took a small sailboat and landed on Isla Serena, some distance from the town.

Isla Serena itself is a large, flat island, what jungle there once was mostly gave way to vast plantations, mainly tobacco and sugar cane. The plantation workers likely were mostly slaves and various other types of indentured servants, mainly of Waturey extraction.

Upon the western side of the Isla Serena lies its sole town, Puerto Serena. The stone architecture in the town centre reminds one of the Revellan cities in the old world, while the mostly wooden houses surrounding it are built in the traditional carrascan style, atleast the one used by Revelle.

The port district of Puerto Serena is basically the same as that of any town of its size in the Carrascan: filthy, full of drunks, sailors, scoundrels of every type and "ladies of the night" plying their trade.

The Governors mansion was located on a small hill overlooking the town. Various well-off inhabitants also made their homes on the foot of the hill, near the governors mansion, as far away from the smells, danger, noise and rush of the port district as possible.

Well, you are now in Puerto Serena, so, post what you do.

No Rest for the Weary: During downtime, you may take an additional downtime
action.

After reaching Puerto Serena, Finn quickly managed to find employment at the port, loading and unloading crates from the local ships. While working, he made sure to keep his eyes and ears attentive, hoping to catch any rumors related to the job his crew was planning.

Side Jobs: You may spend a downtime action in port doing odd jobs. You gain 1
coin for your troubles, and the GM will tell you of any rumors floating around
the port.

Aside from his temp job at the port, Finn took the opportunity to perfect his skills as a deckhand, observing the mariners he was working for and trying to learn some new tricks that might benefit the Memelesi.

Carina has had a plan in mind since the initial discussion on ship. During the remaining transit, she spends most of the day in her cabin forging the documentation and letters of introduction to back up her story. On arrival at Puerto Serena, Carina is nowhere to be seen.

Instead, the famous fencing master and Revellan Countesss Ines dela Torea, Second Cousin to the queen, steps off the ship. She is dressed down for travel to the mansion but her steamer trunk holds all of the proper finery and gifts for attending a noble wedding. Buried under a false bottom is a set of servant's clothes, just in case. A day or two of hospitality should be all that she needs to squeeze plenty of useful information out of the other gathering wedding guests and maybe a spare set of servant's keys. Living the life of fine clothes, rich food and comfortable beds for a few days makes for a nice added bonus.

Consort - with the nobility gathering for the wedding
Second action is going to depend on how much Stress I take from going for broke here.

Orlov volunteers to be Carina's servant in her trip to the mansion. He carries her heavy bag for her, fetches and carries for her endless errands, and is often seen trudging around town with a scowl on his face lugging a box or fruit or some other object. Sometimes he is singing a shanty quietly to himself.

He also engaged in a friendly wrestling competition on the beach.

Action 1: He is scanning the town and especially the mansion, trying to build up a map of the area, especially including entrances, exits, where the town guard is, armoury, weak points, hiding places, guards, anything of interest. Pacing and singing are for marking distance.

He would avoid using a spyglass, but is using navigational tools to create the map.

Action 2: training prowess.

Jaabir will try to find a curio shop or herbalist so that he can stock up on components to make magical remedies in case of trouble. (if these can be made beforehand he will make a couple. The description of Magical Remedies seems to imply that you have to be studying the malady that the remedy is for.)

He will also collect as many dead rats as he can find, to build a small army of undead vermin under his control. (Back from the Brink)

Mayumi joins Carina in the role of her maidservant. She does the littler servant duties as instructed, not so terribly different than being a cabin boy. When she is not actively doing something for Carina she spends time chatting with the other servants, listening for the little but ultimately very informative tidbits that tend to be known to those who are seemingly invisible to the wealthy.

When she's not involved in this gathering of information, Mayumi takes some time to become more familiar with bits of the island, especially local establishments. She'll see what she can learn here and how to work the ports now that she is on a crew.

Assist Carina or Consort with other servants, depending on how we decide the rolls should be done.

When Mayumi has her moments with the other servants she starts with a few comments like, "Wow, I've never been involved in a wedding this lavish," "Look at all this commotion; there are so many important people here," and "I don't think I've ever seen such a party."

Servants that don't bite, she just treats nicely but doesn't spend time around. If one of her comments gets someone talking she follows with, "Have you been to an event like this before?" and "Have you ever been involved in setting something like this up?"

If that gets them going, then she probes slightly deeper. "Are you involved in setting up this wedding, or are you just with a guest like me?"

If they are involved, that's where her real opportunity lies. "Wow. It must be exhausting. How does all the food get here without it going bad? How bad is clean-up?" And closer, "Can they really house both wedding parties here; is there enough room?" And closer, "Can you believe the governor arranged a wedding to such high nobility? Do you think they'll like their accommodations?" And most importantly if they're still with her, "The dowry must be something amazing to tempt such high nobility. I bet it's spectacular. Were you able to sneak a peak at it? Is it really amazing? I wish I could see it." But she doesn't want that to be the last memory of their conversation so she follows it up with, "But it's the food I'm more like to get a little of. Just some scrap leftovers, but I bet they'll be amazing. What do you think are the best dishes to try? Is there a servant who will be cleaning up the scraps who I should follow to get a taste?"

10:42, Today: Mayumi rolled 6,6,2 using d6,d6,d6 with rolls of 6,6,2.  Consort - gather information on dowry.

On the docks, Carina turns to Orlov and Mayumi. "I'm going to play on their prejudices and blind spots, so I apologize in advance for treating you like the primitive savages that the Revellan governor will assume that you are. It's a good way to get you overlooked."

Cut back to Carina on the dock. The sun sets and rises again and she is a much younger Carina standing at the end of a Revallan Merchantman's gangplank several seasons ago. She is a recently dispossessed noble, having just made her way to the colonies. It has been months since she knew a soft bed or a belly full of fresh food. This place, her first stop in the colonies, seems a good place to find some.

Cut to the front gates of the mansion and Carina addressing the guards. "Inform the governor that Countesss Ines dela Torea has arrived from the homeland and requests his hospitality."

Cut to Carina holding up a sword across both hands with the wavy, flowing water patterns of Davarrian steel from  Meghra. "The legendary Kingslayer that broke the Valdesian chokehold on the world." She turns the blade, passing the pommel to the governor. The Kingslayer might be real or just a legend. Either way, this is not it but Carina's blade is extremely impressive. "Feel the balance, light as a feather. I can't part with it, obviously but I would be delighted to show you or your daughter a few moves from the Torea school."

Cut to Carina dancing among other nobles in the mansion's ballroom. As she and her partner turn, she splits off and finds herself dancing with the governor again. As if picking up a conversation in progress, she says, "this business I am on for my family is quite sensitive. We would be grateful if you kept my name out of your letters, at least until such time as I am on my way back to Revelle."

Cut to Carina falling back on a huge, four poster canopy bed, a bottle of wine in her hand.

Cut to Carina standing next to the governor on the front steps of the mansion. "I thank you for your hospitality. I do hope our paths cross again. Until then, governor."

Cut back to the front gates and the present with an older Carina, Orlov and Mayumi. "Please inform the Governor that Countesss Ines dela Torea requests his hospitality and brings gifts for his daughter's wedding."

Cut to Carina in front of the governor, a bottle of wine in hand. "For your daughter on the day of her wedding. I rushed back when I heard the good news. I have an even more special gift. My native servants have a special connection with the natural world. The male has asked to perform a ritual of his people said to bring clear skies and calm winds. We wouldn't want the special day to be rained out, would we? My handmaid knows several. . .feminine techniques for enhancing beauty that we don't have in the homeland. She would be delighted to help your daughter's servants with making her look her best on the most important day of her life. With your permission, of course."

Roll 1
Trading Desperate for increased effect and +1d. Carina is really laying it on thick and a lot of what she says won't stand up if the governor double checks the facts with someone in Revelle.

Increased Effect for Cloak And Dagger

Potential increased effect for Fine Dress and Fine Blade to establish her as a high noble swordmaster.

Sway - the Governor to believe in and trust the "Countess".
14:44, Today: Carina Flamanico rolled 8 using 2d6 ((6,2)). Whew!

Roll 2
Trading to Desperate (if possible, ignore the second die if I'm starting from Controlled) and Cloak And Dagger as before
Increased effect for Bottle Of Fine Wine

15:12, Today: Carina Flamanico rolled 4 using 2d6 with rolls of 2,2.  Sway - Set Up the others to Gather Information. Well that's not good!

I'll go ahead and Resist the consequences on that.
15:13, Today: Carina Flamanico rolled 8 using 2d6 with rolls of 4,4.  Resist Consequences of the last roll.

2 Stress plus whatever the Flashback cost. 2 XP marked for Resolve.

Jaabir:

Alright, so, Jaabir rolled very poorly on his rat gathering attempt, so the Attune part of his post didn't come to pass. Yet, atleast. His attempt to gather the rats led to a... well, it ended up disastrously.

Starting Position was Risky, searching for rats would bring him to the worst parts of town and has a chance to attract suspicion.

Starting Effect was Standard, there's bound to be plenty of rats here in Town, just that it's not trivial to gather enough of them.

I assume that Jaabir didn't trade Position for Effect, so it stays the same.

Jaabir's search for vermin led him to the worst places in town, dark alleys, trash heaps and anywhere else that rats were bound to be. He hadn't managed to find any rats that wouldn't flee long before his approach and seemed to have overlooked whatever rat caracasses there were around. After quite a long time, he finally managed to find what seemed to be a dead rat, yet the creature he thought to be dead was not quite so. Upon grasping it, the not quite dead rat suddenly sprang to life and very painfully bit Jaabir on his finger before scurrying off. While analyzing the damage the rat did, Jaabir didn't realize that this was the least of his problems.

"What the hell are you doin' here on our turf." he heard behind him. Being unfamiliar with the town, he had wandered somewhere he shouldn't during his search for rats. This dark alleyway he was in was apparently taken as a 'turf' by a gang of three rough-looking men. "How 'bout we teach him a lesson he won't forget." another one of the men suggests and the other two nod in agreement.

They smelled of sweat, rum and tobacco. Jaabir could notice the sharp blades behind their waists, but for now, they advanced upon Jaabir with only their fists.

Now, this isn't the final version of this scene, just the Worst Case Scenario. You can try to Resist the consequences, which will change what happened, at the cost of Stress for you.

So, you didn't really manage to find any suitable rat caracasses due to your roll. In addition, it resulted in two consequences:

Consequence 1: Rat Bite on Finger (Level 1 harm) - Choosing to resist this particular consequence will mean that you suffer no harm. Effectively as if it didn't happen.

Consequence 2: Being Ambushed By Thugs (Complication) - Choosing to resist this particular consequence wouldn't completely remove it. The thugs would still be close and thinking that someone might be encroaching on their turf, but wouldn't see you yet and neither would they have you surrounded. So you'd have the opportunity to attempt to, say, slip away unnoticed or just run away instead of starting out being encircled by them (maning, your starting Position in that situation and probably also Effect would be better).

For each Consequence you choose to resist, you will have to make a separate Resistance roll. For the Rat Bite, you resist with Prowess. For the Ambush, you resist with Insight. Each time your Resist a consequence, you gain 6 stress minus the result of your resistance roll. If you get a Critical on a Resistance roll, you instead clear 1 Stress.

Orlov:

Alright, so, Position was Risky, Effect was Great (due to Navigator's Tools). I assume you didn't trade Position for Effect. You now have access to a very detailed map of Puerto Serena and the governor's mansion (the parts accessible to a servant, atleast), including all points of interest, rough distances and relevant entrances/exits. You can add it as an item to your sheet.

However, you rolled 4, so there'll be consequences.

Orlov embraced his role as Carina's servant, while discreetly mapping out the area whilst doing his "chores". The long time spent doing that was very fruitful, resulting in a very detailed map. However, it seemed that Orlov's efforts didn't go unnoticed.

While returning to the mansion after the wrestling competition on the beach, he's stopped by two guards from the town watch. One appears to be a higher ranking officer, a sergeant, while the other seems to just be a rank-and-file member. "We have reports of someone lingering suspiciously around key infrastructure in town. A man that matches your description." says the town watch sergeant to Orlov, eyeing him with interest. "Yeah, that's the guy I saw loitering around the guardhouse. That Ourogan. You know those savages, they probably sent this guy to scope out the town before a raid!" the other guardsman says, eyeing Orlov with suspicion. The sergeant rolls his eyes and doesn't seem to treat his junior colleagues accussations seriously... atleast not yet. "Well, what can you say about that?"

I chose a Complication of Suspicion as the only consequence. You can resist it with Insight. If you do, there will be reports that some person seemed to suspiciously linger in some vital areas of the town and that there might be a spy in town. However, they won't know it was you and it's not clear how seriously they would treat those reports. They'll still stop you and ask you if you saw anyone suspicious in town who might be the culprit.

You can also just accept the consequence and try to talk your way out of it or something.
