Alignment
Alignment is dynamic and the selection on your character sheet is what you strive for. It will have very little effect on the game in general. If a player is particularly good at RPing their chosen alignment I will award an RP bonus to XP. This should not be planned for or expected. If alignment becomes important for any number of reasons I will decide what your current alignment is. With that said a word on alignments specifically.
I separate the two aspects entirely. Good and evil is pretty straight forward. Good have regard for others, evil do not. Law and chaos are more confusing. It does not specifically refer to law and crime but to order and chaos. Chaotic characters like things to be unpredictable and they resist conformity and control. Lawful character not only obey the law, but live up to a certain standard or code.
So choose what you like but I would advise against evil or CN characters. As they can be difficult to play appropriately and still be cooperative in a party. Not impossible and not strictly prohibited however.
Notes on Neutrality. On the law chaos spectrum, it's simply the middle. No other meaning. However on the Good and evil spectrum Neutrality is actually something different. Neutral characters believe that morality is in neutrality. They believe all life has meaning and worth. They don't stand in judgment but they will help maintain balance. In a way, they believe Neutrality is the greater good.
Using poison is not evil. Evilly using poison is.
Rules of Thumb:
To Good, Honor and Compassion are virtues
To Evil, Power and Wealth are virtues.
To Neutral, Life and Suffering are virtues.
To Lawful, Honesty and Order are virtues.
To Chaotic, Freedom and Flexibility are virtues.
