Skalavik

Skalavik is located in the fork where Clearwater River merges with Iron River in the Hunted Lands, over 20 miles outside the protection provided by The Palisade and even further from Audreyn’s Wall. It is about 40 miles, cross-country, or about 45 miles downriver to the city of Nordvärn.

Skalavik was once established as a vital trade nexus and a bastion against bandits and faeries by Krysuvik. He didn't found the town, but he has done more for it than anyone else. And though it no longer lives up to that reputation, it is still a valuable source of silver and timber and it prospers through trade and mining.

It is protected by a palisade of heavy timber on a foundation of rocks and boulders stretching between the two rivers. It has a single entrance through the palisade with heavy timber gates and flanked by towers. A chest-high stone wall runs along the two converging riverbanks. Aldwyn’s Eye, a tall watchtower of heavy timber built on a rocky hill inside the walls is always manned. There are warning bells and horns that sound in time of danger, but they have barely been needed since Krysuvik.

It’s no longer a center of political attention from the outside and as bandit and faerie activity coming out of the Frostharrow has declined over the last few generations, it’s a little “sleepy” and complaisant for a trading town in the Hunted Lands.

It both has the feel of a frontier town and a town that’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Two seasonal camps support the town, one located in the hills to the northeast where animals graze during the summer months. The second camp shifts annually to whatever part of the forest is being worked by the foresters and colliers.

The last year has been a great one and an abundance of food, silver, tin, lumber, wool, and other goods have come in.

Rumors of the treasure Krysuvik hid or was buried with have been around since his passing generations ago.

Going about visibly unarmed and unarmored will invite challenges and give you a -8 penalty to Charisma ability checks. Most adults capable of defending themselves will be armed and possibly armored. Though farming and mining are hot and heavy work and it would be counterproductive to wear armor while working. Not accepting challenges in the form of insults or deliberate bumps while passing is a sign of cowardice. Casual conflicts such as these are usually settled in the town square to avoid disturbing everyone else. Wagers are common.

Wearing armor, but no visible weapons gives you a -4 penalty to Charisma ability checks and you will be challenged to wrestling matches.

Population: About 1,350
There are another 50 or so active miners that call Skalavik home.

Government: The Hunted Lands fall under the dominion of Jarl Orm Karrisson.

Defense: Town wall. 14 warriors are a permanent guard under the Stewad’s command and a militia of 135 able-boded "warriors" could be summoned within a day. Half of them would arrive quickly.

Commerce: Tiny villages, farms, orchards, mines, and forests around them bring them food, wool, silver, tin, iron, and lumber. Merchants import whatever else the town needs. Cattle, geese, horses, pigs, and sheep are all brought to market.

About 1,700 acres of forest is carefully cultivated and about 30 acres of timber is actively being felled at any time.

Imports: Luxury goods, weaponry, and other finished products.
Exports: Lumber, tin, and silver.

Ships arrive or depart at least every other day with cargo, merchants, and passengers. Each ship coming in brings an average of two tons of foodstuffs and five to ten tons of other things. And an average of nine wagonloads of goods come and go every day, with an average of a half-ton per wagon.

Organizations: Mining Guild, Merchant’s Guild, and Lumber Guild are all major players in town. The Armorers’ Guild is much smaller and less influential and is currently without a Guild Master.
