For those players that are new and may need help with the system. I urge you to not only post here and let me know so I can create a thread for you so we can talk about the system privately but you can ask some of the people inside of the game. I have already had a few great submissions.

Sorry I was swamped yesterday but I'll be updating messages today. In terms of those who have submitted. I am going to talk about that shortly. I'd like to get all the potential people in before I start going through that process to make it easier.

Steps for creating a character (this will eventually by copied to the RTJ)

1. Create a character name
2. Pick a character race/heritage
3. Decide on a background that most fits your character
4. Pick you High Aspect (Core Concept)
5. Pick a Trouble
6. Assign one additional aspect that could be anything (leave others open)
7. Assign a values to skills using the skill tree (background gives you 5 skills you get an additional 5 skills)
8. Pick your stunts using refresh, do not go below 1 refresh.
9. Decide on equipment you are carrying or weapons (no real guides here but if you want details of what is in the world I can provide that. There is no money per say to buy equipment)

Congrats you just made a FATE character.

A few things to remember:

#1 Don't try to power game. This isn't that type of game. FATE is very loose and fast with the rules so if you are looking for specifics sometimes you just have to make that up on the spot.
#2 The best aspects are both good and bad generally, they are things that lend to the imagination of your character
#3 Combat is very different in this game when combat happens I will explain through all of it but it won't be the main focus in this game
#4 Your character is already part of the Raven, you can decide why you are part of a merchant vessel and what role you play

Nope. High Aspects would be something that you would make up. You can check here for good examples:

Quick question on Stunts.

How many Stunts should we choose? As far as I can tell, we have one "racial" and one "background" which are fixed, but I'm not sure where these are being sourced. Ordinarily (according to FATE Condensed) we would have 3 Stunts plus the option to reduce our starting Refresh (usually 3) for additional stunts at a cost of 1:1, giving us a maximum of 5 stunts if we bust our Refresh down to 1. You've stated our starting Refresh is 2, however, which would suggest a max of 4 Stunts, but I just wanted to clarify. So do we have:

1) 1 Race, 1 Background, 3 Free Choice + option to take one extra at a cost of 1 Refresh (max 6 stunts)
2) 1 Race, 1 Background, 2 Free Choice + the -1 Refresh option (max 5 stunts)
3) 1 Race, 1 Background, 1 Free Choice + the -1 Refresh option (max 4 stunts)
4) Some other way I haven't thought of?

If you pick human....you get refresh 3 every other race is refresh of 2 with one stunt from their racial.

So by default everyone will start with 3 stunts (you can't go lower than 1 in refresh)

Human race:(refresh 3-1=2 stunts max), background 1 = 3 stunts
Other races: (refresh 2-1 =1 stunt max), background 1, race 1 = 3 stunts

which means you would end up with 1 refresh left. Which is correct. Later you will get more refresh to either buy more stunts/skills/aspects or you will just have a bigger refresh pool.

I still want to clarify, because in FATE Condensed we would ordinarily have 3 stunts plus the option of reducing Refresh (base: 3) for stunts on a 1:1 basis.

So starting from that baseline (i.e. 3 "free choice" stunts, Refresh: 3)...
1) Non-humans have a non-elective reduction of Refresh (to 2) for a Racial Stunt. Humans remain at Refresh 3.
2) One "free choice" Stunt is non-electively occupied by Background.
3) This leaves 2 "free choice" stunts, plus the option of further reducing Refresh for one (non-human) or two (human only) additional stunt(s).

This would mean:
- Humans have baseline 3 Stunts (1 Background, 2 Free Choice) and Refresh 3, with max 5 Stunts (by reducing Refresh from 3 to 1).
- Non-humans have baseline 4 Stunts (1 Background, 1 Race, 2 Free Choice) and Refresh 2, with max 5 Stunts (by reducing Refresh from 2 to 1)

Would this be correct? Or do we only start with one Background stunt (plus a Racial if non-human) and the 1:1 swap on Refresh?
Thanks

Let me check and get back to you. If that is so then yes....we would be going that route. I don't want to gimp the default rules.

So I was wrong about the refresh. I missed that they give you three free stunts slots.

So for the stunts it will remain the same as I said above:

Humans still get +1 refresh
Races already start with a free stunt
Backgrounds already start with a free stunt

So everyone would have the choice of one extra stunt, humans get a few more options because they have higher refresh.

But that means everyone's refresh starts at 3 (Humans have 4). Still can't go below 1. I don't recommend dropping it below 3 unless you really want a certain stunt.

Hopefully this clears the confusion.

Just waiting on a few more questions to get answered and then we can get started. We will work through the character sheets, questions and what not as we go rather than doing it all in the front.

Remember: With this first game, skills are absolutely open to changing without any special reason other than you don't like them. This means you can flip flop to your hearts content as long as you aren't changing that much. In other words, change what sucks...don't change because you want a pass a roll.

Examples: Man I wish I could do X more. Well now you can get rid of one of your other skills.
I didn't realize I would use this skill more often....I wish I made it my +4, well you can make it +4 and make your plus +4 whatever it replaces.
Man this aspect really doesn't help me much....change it.
This stunt is not that useful, switch it out.

After this first game, it's locked down but for now feel free to build your character.
