special characters

Is there a way to make special characters work in Character Names?

Re: special characters

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

As a German speaker, and a MERP (Middle Earth Role Playing) Narrator - this would be immensely helpful.  (Do you have any idea how many Elvish and Dwarvish names have ü, ö, and ü?)

Re: special characters

Unfortunately special characters are not guaranteed to appear correctly on machines running other languages, which (apart from looking ugly) can also cause problems for the database.

The only way to force them to appear properly is to use ISO codes, such as ڎ to produce ڎ, or å for å, and those don't work at all in character names.

Re: special characters

Pardon my lack of database knowledge...

But how does the Character Field differ to the Post Body?

Ie, why do ISO codes work in a post body, and not in a character name? Maybe this should be moved into the RPOL Dev thread?

Re: special characters

Its likely in the PHP parsing.  The character names have a simple filter most likely.  They aren't parsed for RuBB code and simply don't allow the variety of special characters seen in a post.  A post body is decoded, and allowed special characters are properly escaped/translated to be database safe.

I'm not saying it can't be done... You just need to post in the development forum and get enough peer support to convince jase to code it in.  His time is precious, as is anyones, and he probabily has a long list of priorities that trump this feature however.

Re: special characters

I second that please. I'll support it should you put it in the development forum. It would be a nice addition.
