Sutrid Ulfdottir

Physical Description

At a distance, Sutrid has often been mistaken for a maiden barely into her second decade, as opposed to someone entering their third. It is, to be fair, an easy mistake to make - at just five feet in height, slight of build and usually clad in a hooded cloak and a mass of furs, she is small even for her gender, and covers herself well to fend off unwanted attention.

Shed the bulky coverings, and she's certainly striking. Her pale skin is almost as light as her hair, all the more so when she has it tied up to display the black tribal tattoos down the side of her cranium, and with high cheekbones and an expressive mouth, she'd probably be considered pretty if she didn't seem to be perpetually frowning.

Despite her height, Sutrid is nevertheless evenly proportioned, if perhaps somewhat narrower of hip and slighter at both top and bottom than some onlookers might choose. Her hands and feet are somewhat toughened from a lifetime on the move, but she's managed to avoid serious disfigurement or injury in the intervening period beyond a couple of scars to her back and forearms.

Personality

Sutrid has two sides to her personality, one for outsiders, and another for those she trusts. Given the world in which she lives, she's not had much chance to show the latter.

To the outside world, Sutrid presents a face as welcoming and warm as the slate hills of her birth. Cold, obstinate and very protective of her property and privacy, she comes across as tightly wound, humourless and mercenary, unwilling to offer help without a promise of restitution, and cynical to the point of apparent heartlessness.

That being said, such an icy exterior belies both a much warmer side to her personality for those she deigns to show it to. When she feels safe enough to lower her guard, she does so almost totally, giving whatever she can for others with genuine enjoyment, and coming across as agreeable, light hearted and even affectionate.

History

Sutrid was born into the tribe of the Ondvargr, a name which roughly translates as Ghost Wolves. Had her fortune been different, then she might have spent her days roaming around the Tempest Hills with the rest of her nomadic clan, but her silver-blonde hair marked her out for a different fate.

Nominally a great honour, those with the pelt of the Ghost Wolf are seen as closest to the spirit world, and thus are trained to serve the tribe as its augurs, judges and leaders. Such a role does not come without burdens, for the Augurs are not allowed to be touched by another member of the tribe once they reach their fifteenth moon, lest their power be lost. Her father, grieving for a daughter who was never truly his, proved apt when naming her 'Beautiful Sorrow'.

Growing up, Sutrid tried her best to be all that was expected of her. Isolated, watched and with the weight of expectation upon her, she nonetheless dutifully learned to call the birds, throw the bones and a hundred other ways to find meaning in the chaos, but as she grew and men three times her age began trusting her guesses more than her senses, her panic grew and grew.

Eventually, at her fourteenth birthday, she was pushed too far. Panicking at a botched reading which almost killed a fellow tribesmember, she stole away in the night rather than spend her days with the lives of her fellows in her hands. In the years since, she has wandered further afield, slipping in and out of groups but never staying long, her eventual destination a mystery to all but her.
