Nobody will look at Berthold and think of a mighty warrior, or even somebody you would want in the front line. Nobody will see him as a captain, smart and in control. To be fair, he's probably the person you would choose last.

But if you have this problem outside combat, then somebody who understands and can 'arrange' things is ever so handy. In that case his adequate skill with the crossbow is acceptable, as he is there to stop people from bleeding out, knows where to find cheap lodging with drinkable ale, and can talk over unfortunate misunderstandings. He might even know how to open that chest you 'acquired'.

His studded leather armour is scruffy but well maintained, his rather big leather hat oddly stained, and on his chest is a small felt badge of blue and red with a brass crossed key-and-sword. The only item he carries that looks neat is his crossbow - even his shield is a kind of vague greenish brown.
